Emergence of Web 2.0 technologies became a trigger for a revolution that goes far beyond the Web. For an average student Web was transformed from a steady, accessible source of information into a place of action and viable exchange of knowledge - a kind of a virtual classroom. Students started to look for experience and a touch to reality online, and this is where remote laboratories come in place. Such laboratories became an inevitable need in electrical and computer engineering courses dealing with microcomputers. This paper presents an overview of available architectures of microcomputer laboratories used today and addresses their most important limitations. Moreover, an important extension of such architecture is proposed allowing support for remote Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) laboratory. Different aspects of compatibility between microcomputer laboratories and WSNs have been examined to allow creation of an general extension model. With additional effort and adaptation, WSN nodes may serve remote clients as an economic and accessible microcomputer laboratory providing invaluable hands-on experience and a motivation for a course using it.

Chronic diseases (eg, cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, diabetes, and cancer) and injuries are the leading causes of death and disability in India, and we project pronounced increases in their contribution to the burden of disease during the next 25 years. Most chronic diseases are equally prevalent in poor and rural populations and often occur together. Although a wide range of cost-effective primary and secondary prevention strategies are available, their coverage is generally low, especially in poor and rural populations. Much of the care for chronic diseases and injuries is provided in the private sector and can be very expensive. Sufficient evidence exists to warrant immediate action to scale up interventions for chronic diseases and injuries through private and public sectors;improved public health and primary health-care systems are essential for the implementation of cost-effective interventions. We strongly advocate the need to strengthen social and policy frameworks to enable the implementation of interventions such as taxation on bidis (small hand-rolled cigarettes), smokeless tobacco, and locally brewed alcohols. We also advocate the integration of national programmes for various chronic diseases and injuries with one another and with national health agendas. India has already passed the early stages of a chronic disease and injury epidemic;in view of the implications for future disease burden and the demographic transition that is in progress in India, the rate at which effective prevention and control is implemented should be substantially increased. The emerging agenda of chronic diseases and injuries should be a political priority and central to national consciousness, if universal health care is to be achieved. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

State model of steam reheating for control optimization

This paper presents a nonlinear state space model for thermal process of steam reheating. The purpose of the model is to examine existing control system and to support the development of new more efficient control systems for steam reheating units. This model describes countercurrent heat exchanger (biflux) with bypass and two parallel flow heat exchangers with bypasses and spray attemperator. The model includes interconnections of subsystems and the dynamics of all control valves. The model is a state model which enables modeling of power variation from start up to shut down. First, the basic principles of this approach are compared with already published results. Second, the model is calibrated for the newly designed reheating unit for the planned upgrade of a power plant. Both results from static and dynamic characteristic responses, as well as selected control responses in operating range are presented.

In this paper are presented some new concepts of control applied in Power systems. Are given the architectures and methodologies based on the agents theory. The complexity of Power systems is included into a new paradigm - Complex Adaptive systems - and the modelling and control of Power systems based on intelligent agents are considered. Some concepts on hierarchical and heterarchical architectures which include different intelligent techniques are also presented in this paper.

To achieve the required performance of complex electronic systems it is necessary to validate the system function during all phases of the design, which means multilevel validation. A hybrid Online Monitor for hard real time systems (HRTS) has been developed. A special attention was dedicated on the multilevel validation in all phases of the design.

This paper considers the stability of the fractional-order linear time-invariant systems with interval type uncertainties in both fractional orders and the relevant coefficients. It is an extension of our previous result on the robust stability analysis of the interval type uncertain fractional order LTI systems with crisply known fractional orders. We have proposed a stability check procedure for uncertain LTI systems with interval fractional orders and interval coefficients. The procedure is demonstrated with some simple examples
