Solar photovoltaic generation and energy storage are being used to power rural places. However, remote users are burdened by private energy storage devices. Remoteness limits the economic viability of cooperative energy storage. Our work proposes a shared energy storage model considering battery degradation. To test the model, we compared Individual, Neighbor, and Communal scenarios. The system was built as a mixed integer linear programming model to investigate optimal operating methods. Compared to the other situations, the Neighbor scenario saves operational expenses by 4.97%. Finally, the self-consumption rate shows optimal penetration of renewable energy parameters. © 2024 IEEE.

In driving switched reluctance (SR) motors at high speeds, it is necessary to apply a high voltage during excitation and demagnetization. To clarify the usefulness of the proposed drive circuit, this paper focuses on the reduction of copper loss in motors and confirms the effect of copper loss reduction by comparing it with the conventional drive circuit. We also focused on capacitor voltage fluctuations caused by resonance phenomena and examined the effect of increasing torque by actively utilizing resonance phenomena. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This research focuses on Sanur Harbor, an inter-island ferry port located in southern Bali. The majority of visitors to Sanur Harbor are tourists who want to travel to Nusa Penida Island. At this port, facilities are available in the form of a Public Address System (PAS) and information officers whose job is to provide information regarding the arrival and departure of ships. However, the effectiveness of this facility is limited for deaf people. Deaf people often have difficulty getting this information independently and often have to rely on manual assistance from officers. This research aims to develop software based on sign language video integration which aims to increase the accessibility of departure and arrival information at Sanur Harbor for deaf people in Bali. The software development method uses a user-centered design development approach which involves the stages of needs analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation. Sign language videos will be integrated into the software as a medium to convey important information about ship departure and arrival schedules, travel routes, pier names, fast boat names, and other important information to deaf users. Evaluation is carried out through user testing and collecting feedback from users regarding understandability, usability, and user satisfaction with the software being developed. It is hoped that the results of this research can make a positive contribution to increasing information accessibility for deaf people in Sanur Harbor and can become a basis for developing similar technology in other locations. © 2024 IEEE.

As the volume of data generated in the financial sector continues to grow organizations are challenged to effectively manage this vast amount of information. However, the implementation of a technological solution, especially in highly regulated financial environments with stringent security and privacy requirements, does not achieve the expected result. This study proposes a novel model, called DAM (Data Lake Analysis Model), to analyze the implemented Data Lake architecture of a Peruvian financial institution in order to identify opportunities for improvement and close the gaps that may arise in the management of large volumes of data. This methodology consists of 3 levels: (1) data and internal process analysis, (2) architecture and tools analysis, and (3) data governance analysis. A case study was conducted in a financial institution, and interviews and questionnaires were conducted with analysts and data scientists. The results at the three levels of analysis were very positive, with scores of 4.33, 4.06, and 4.11, respectively. In addition, the results of the questionnaire indicate that the experts rated the analysis as 'good', suggesting that the DAM model is effective in addressing the challenges of financial data management in the Peruvian context. © 2023 IEEE.

Currently, the constant population growth in Peru leads to the generation of large amounts of solid waste, most of these originate from domestic sources and are collected by municipalities. The inefficiency in solid waste collection plans generates rework and therefore operational overhead. Likewise, it pollutes the environment due to waste accumulated in the streets and dissatisfaction from the neighbors. Therefore, an IoT tool is proposed, which will have a solar panel, sensor, chip inside the containers that served to train the algorithm and predict solid waste collection plans for decision-making of a municipality using the time series model, arima and Random Forest. This tool has 3 stages: analysis, design, and validation. Stage 1 evaluates machine learning models and IoT architectures. Stage 2 describes the design and software architecture of the tool. And, in stage 3, the deployment of IoT devices in a municipality of Lima was simulated and its operation was validated with the solid waste collection area. The result of the implementation of the tool in a sector of Villa El Salvador managed to increase the efficiency of solid waste collection plans from 81 % to 96 % effectiveness in said sector. In addition, this reduced operational costs by approximately 8 % and increased the satisfaction of neighbors by not having solid waste accumulated in the streets. © 2023 IEEE.

During 2020, the pandemic intensified global cyberattacks, increasing by 50% in 2021. Since 2022, the war in Ukraine has exacerbated this situation, particularly in the oil and gas industry. This sector, considered critical infrastructure, faces cybersecurity challenges that demand a proactive approach combining technological and behavioral controls. Therefore, a cybersecurity model based on NIST CSF (National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework) and CIS CSC (Center for Internet Security Critical Security Controls) is proposed to protect the technological platform of a natural gas company. This model consists of four stages: environment analysis, scope and risk appetite, control design, and finally, its development. This model was validated through the evaluation of the implemented controls and a survey of the staff, obtaining a 92.69% effectiveness and an 81.55% acceptance, thus achieving level 2 of NIST CSF, meeting the established objective. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the integration of technologies in voting systems with the aim of improving the transparency of the process. This study proposes an audit model based on the ISO/IEC 27002 standard to evaluate electronic voting systems that make use of Blockchain technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), with the aim of improving security in voting processes. To validate this model, an evaluation of the security control was carried out by applying this international standard to a voting system that integrates Blockchain and IoT. In our analysis of 6 security controls applied to the reality of electronic voting, the system passed all established tests;Therefore, it can be concluded that the risk of compromising system information has been significantly mitigated. This research contributes to the advancement of the security of electronic voting systems and provides a solid foundation for future developments in this field. The combination of emerging technologies and international standards promotes trust, security and therefore mitigates any risk of compromising an electronic voting system by following the best practices of the international standard ISO/IEC 27002. © 2023 IEEE.

During emergencies like COVID-19, maintaining educational quality involves integrating non-specialized online. Therefore, a framework is proposed to improve the authenticity and traceability in the assignation of grades in online classrooms of educational institutions in Perú. The proposed framework will impact students and teachers. The former, will be able to have more confidence in their exam grades, which will avoid request to the professors to review them. The latter will trace their students learning in an organized way, which will allow them to assess them continuously. The framework consists of three phases: (1) design of the blockchain architecture, (2) design of the web application architecture and (3) implementation of the web application. It was validated with the application of two experiments made with the support of twenty Peruvian students and a survey conducted with three experts. The validation results show that the proposed framework reduces the time required for the request of study certificates by 99.96% and the survey results by the experts showed that 'Traceability','Authenticity', 'Performance', and 'Usability' obtained an average rating of 4.83 (very high), 4.7 (very high), 4 (high), and 4 (high) respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Advancements in machine learning techniques for analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) show great potential in accurately measuring various activities in the field of health monitoring. This work examines the feasibility of using non-invasive HRV data gathered during everyday activities to train machine learning models for accurate activity classification. In the field of personalization, the study focuses on the difficulty of adapting to individual differences in baseline HRV. It also acknowledges that HRV is influenced by stress, physical activity, and external influences, and that it is a dynamic measure. The experimental methodology consists of a pilot study using a retrospective observational cohort approach. It utilizes a waistband device to continuously record heart rate variability (HRV) during different daily activities. The study utilizes a thorough methodology that includes statistical data description, correlation analysis, variance analysis, outlier detection, and identification of cycle periods using power spectral density. The performance of various machine learning models, such as Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree, and Logistic Regression, was evaluated for activity classification. The Decision Tree model exhibited superior performance. The work provides useful insights into the potential of machine learning for HRV-based activity monitoring, highlighting the importance of collecting reliable data and developing tailored models to improve accuracy and practicality. © 2024 IEEE.

A deep learning framework for automatic assessment of presence in virtual reality using multimodal behavioral cues

Effective development of virtual reality (VR) applications is heavily reliant on the evaluation of user experience (UX). However, traditional methods such as questionnaires have inherent limitations which hinder their ability to capture nuanced behavioral responses and impede the agility of VR content creation: They are time-consuming, burdensome for users, and require significant human effort for interpretation. This study introduces an automated framework aimed at addressing the limitations of questionnaire-based evaluations to assess UX in VR. Our primary focus is to validate the concept of this framework through assessment of the sense of presence (SOP), a crucial psychological perception with significant impact on VR UX. Our proposed framework utilizes a deep neural network (DNN) to analyze patterns in multimodal behavioral cues, including facial expressions, head movements, and hand movements, to predict scores from the Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ). Additionally, we introduce two statistical profiles: the Visual Entropy Profile (VEP), which offers insights into visual complexity by depicting scene entropy, and the Experiential Presence Profile (EPP), which is designed to capture users’ historical SOP levels to enable personalized baseline and sensitivity estimation. The proposed framework achieves a significant correlation between actual and predicted IPQ scores, with a Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient of 0.7303, showcasing the potential of DNNs in analyzing complex behavioral signals and automating SOP assessment. This study represents a pioneering effort in leveraging DNNs for the automatic assessment of SOP and paves the way for future advances in automatically assessing VR UX and unlocking new opportunities in the field. © The Author(s) 2025.
