Pedestrian wind flow prediction using spatial-frequency generative adversarial network

Pedestrian wind flow is a critical factor in designing livable residential environments under growing complex urban *** pedestrian wind flow during the early design stages is essential but currently suffers from inefficiencies in numerical *** learning,particularly generative adversarial networks(GAN),has been increasingly adopted as an alternative method to provide efficient prediction of pedestrian wind ***,existing GAN-based wind flow prediction schemes have limitations due to the lack of considering the spatial and frequency characteristics of wind flow *** study proposes a novel approach termed SFGAN,which embeds spatial and frequency characteristics to enhance pedestrian wind flow *** the spatial domain,Gaussian blur is employed to decompose wind flow into components containing wind speed and distinguished flow edges,which are used as the embedded spatial *** information of wind flow is obtained through discrete wavelet transformation and used as the embedded frequency *** spatial and frequency characteristics of wind flow are jointly utilized to enforce consistency between the predicted wind flow and ground truth during the training phase,thereby leading to enhanced *** results demonstrate that SFGAN clearly improves wind flow prediction,reducing Wind_MAE,Wind_RMSE and the Fréchet Inception Distance(FID)score by 5.35%,6.52%and 12.30%,compared to the previous best method,*** also analyze the effectiveness of incorporating the spatial and frequency characteristics of wind flow in predicting pedestrian wind *** reduces errors in predicting wind flow at large error intervals and performs well in wake regions and regions surrounding *** enhanced predictions provide a better understanding of performance variability,bringing insights at the early design stage to improve pedestrian wind *** proposed spatial-frequen

DIG: Improved DINO for Graffiti Detection

Graffiti detection is essential in historic building protection and urban neighborhood management. Graffiti detection has made significant progress in recent years based on the development of deep learning. However, small-scale graffiti, interference from the background, and the false detection of word parts in graffiti make it a challenging problem. This article proposes a Transformer-based high-precision graffiti detection method, namely DIG. Precisely, it consists of three modules: 1) Spatial query selection (SQS), scale-aware IoU loss (SIL);2) Denoising Task with binary contrastive denoising (BCDN);and 3) IoU-guided box denoising (IBD) modules. To detect small-scale graffiti, this paper proposes SIL to help the loss function to perceive small-scale graffiti and large-scale graffiti fairly. To reduce the false detection of word parts, this article presents the SQS module, which integrates spatial information into the query selection process of the Encoder to filter out falsely detected bounding boxes within the graffiti. To reduce the interference from the background, this article introduces a denoising task with BCDN and IBD modules, improving the model’s ability to distinguish graffiti from the background and accurately select appropriate bounding boxes. A large number of experimental results on the STORM dataset show that our method achieves state-of-the-art results with an AP50 of 87.9%. Moreover, DIG achieved competitive results on the FineFM dataset for mask detection. This indicates that DIG can also be conveniently transferred to detect other scenarios. © 2013 IEEE.

Decentralized control in active distribution grids via supervised and reinforcement learning

While moving towards a low-carbon, sustainable electricity system, distribution networks are expected to host a large share of distributed generators, such as photovoltaic units and wind turbines. These inverter-based resources are intermittent, but also controllable, and are expected to amplify the role of distribution networks together with other distributed energy resources, such as storage systems and controllable loads. The available control methods for these resources are typically categorized based on the available communication network into centralized, distributed, and decentralized or local. Standard local schemes are typically inefficient, whereas centralized approaches show implementation and cost concerns. This paper focuses on optimized decentralized control of distributed generators via supervised and reinforcement learning. We present existing state-of-the-art decentralized control schemes based on supervised learning, propose a new reinforcement learning scheme based on deep deterministic policy gradient, and compare the behavior of both decentralized and centralized methods in terms of computational effort, scalability, privacy awareness, ability to consider constraints, and overall optimality. We evaluate the performance of the examined schemes on a benchmark European low voltage test system. The results show that both supervised learning and reinforcement learning schemes effectively mitigate the operational issues faced by the distribution network.

For future Internet of Vehicles (IoV), communications and computing will converge to provide services. Federated learning (FL), as one of the typical distributed computing technologies, needs to be integrated with IoV. For such integration, FL suffers from the straggler effect that the entire learning speed is lowered down, because of the existence of the devices, such as low-powered road side units and vehicles, taking more time to complete their tasks. Although the existing mechanisms reduce straggler effects by adopting asynchronous mechanisms and clustering mechanisms, they lack the detailed analysis of the reasons and the impacts of each cause, leading to inefficiencies in the design of algorithm. Additionally, most of the existing work only considered the impact of a single factor in computation, communication, or data distribution, which lacks comprehensive on research for causes of stragglers effects. The bottleneck is that it is laborious to observe the time delay precisely with the existing high-calculating evaluations. In this article, we elaborately explore the effects of computing power, communication capability, and data distributions on the straggler effects with carefully designing and conducting the extensive experiments. After investigations, we propose a novel learning completion time estimation formula for low computing capability devices with mini-batch stochastic gradient decent (SGD). We compare our proposed estimation formula with the one based on floating operation per second (FLOPs). Through the evaluations, our formula can demonstrate the improvement up to 72.4% at docker and 32.4% at Raspberry Pi device compared to the existing work. © 2014 IEEE.

Hyperautomation acts as a real digital transformation with the support of several cutting-edge cognitive computation methods that include robotic process automation, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and other emerging ones, which is conducive to processing complex industrial processes via extending the range of various data-driven cognitive decision-making algorithms. The study of air quality evaluations (AQE) plays a significant role in ensuring healthy atmospheric environments. In view of the objective existence of uncertainties, AQE can be modeled and addressed by a typical data-driven automated decision-making problem, and hyperautomation can provide a reasonable solution via associating with a variety of techniques. This article explores hyperautomation for AQE via evidential three-way large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) in an intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) setting. First, the notion of intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs) is incorporated into the paradigm of multi-granularity (MG) three-way decisions (TWD), and the model of adjustable MG IF probabilistic rough sets (PRSs) is developed. Second, an IF clustering analysis with the improved technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method is conducted to affirm representative members within a decision group. Third, a novel IF LSGDM method is built via adjustable MG IF PRSs and the evidence reasoning (ER) method. Finally, a case study in the setting of AQE is studied by using the presented evidential three-way LSGDM method. Corresponding experimental analyses are carried out for illustrating the efficiency of hyperautomation for AQE. In general, the proposed method improves the performance of information fusion by virtue of adjustable MG IF PRSs, and the TOPSIS method avoids the influence of subjective factors on decision results. This research paper presents an integration of finite element method (FEM) based models into MATLAB for developing an end-to-end magneto-coupled (MC) communication system tailored for Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT)-based applications. Magneto-coupled communication has emerged as a promising solution for extreme environments like underwater where conventional wireless acoustic communication poses significant challenges. The article exploits the strengths of two software tools: MATLAB and COMSOL Multiphysics, to seamlessly integrate communication protocols with theoretical insights into magnetic channels. The article also demonstrates the development and evaluation of an end-to-end communication system with both simulation and experimental setup. We believe that this integrated approach is highly effective in achieving reliable communication performance in underwater scenarios, thereby advancing the capabilities of IoUT for various real-world applications. © 2025 IEEE.
