An efficient direct-forcing immersed boundary method for flow around a pair of spheres

The numerical study of flow around a pair of spheres and a square array of spheres is investigated by using a direct-forcing immersed boundary method. Using high resolution three-dimensional computations, we analyzed the flow around several configurations: a sphere, a pair of spheres in a tandem arrangement with center-to-center streamwise ratio L/D ranging from 1 to 6, and a square array with 9 spheres in a uniform arrangement. In the latter case, we explore the ratio of array diameter (DG) to sphere diameter (D) at 4, 5, 6 and 7. The center-to-center streamwise and transverse pitch is the same, varied from L/D = 1.5, 2, 2.5 to 3, and they were arranged in a square periodic array to allow uniform distribution within the array. Based on the effective direct-forcing immersed boundary projection method, the fractional time marching methodology is applied for solving four field variables involving three velocities and one pressure component. The pressure Poisson equation is advanced in space by using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and a tridiagonal matrix algorithm (TDMA), effectively solving for the diagonally dominant tridiagonal matrix equations. A direct-forcing immersed boundary method is involved to treat the interfacial terms by adding the appropriate sources as force function at the boundary, separating the phases. Geometries featuring the stationary solid obstacles in the flow are embedded in the Cartesian grid with special discretizations near the embedded boundary using a discrete Dirac delta function to ensure the accuracy of the solution in the cut cells. An important characteristic of flow over the multiple spheres is devised by comparing with the drag and lift coefficients, as well as vortex shedding. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The cyber-physical production system (CPPS) was developed for the interconnection between operational technology (OT) and information and communication technology (ICT) among the machines and decentralized production control. However, OT and ICT are now getting more complex in the modern industry. To enhance industrial management and production process, the CPPS based on the 5G architecture under production environments can provide a more comprehensive solution in the context of Industry 4.0. For this purpose, a 5G CPPS model to improve the interoperability of CPPS in ICT and OT is proposed to build a virtualized Industry 4.0 asset management shell system. First, real-time task artifacts and 5G communication modules are bound in a certain form of virtualization. Second, task artifacts are released to the production line in a real-time scheduling. Third, an order is placed on a production line and split into multiple tasks for production process. Single-machine single-workpiece and multi-machine and multi-workpiece processing cases are used for testing in the production line. Experimental results show that the proposed 5G CPPS can efficiently achieve multi-machine work piece processing. © 2022, The Author(s).

Effects of Afterschool programs in Public Libraries on Disadvantaged Children: The Case of the New Taipei City Libraryψ

This study aims to investigate effects of afterschool programs in public libraries on disadvantaged children in Taiwan, which serves to demonstrate the value of public libraries for supporting social justice. This study was qualitative in nature. Interviews and observations were employed for data collection. Study participants included: 22 children, 13 parents, eight volunteers, and seven librarians. Findings of this study show that the reasons for parents allowing their children to participate in the program were a lack of time to take care of their children, an inadequate home learning environment, their children requiring assistance needed for to complete their schoolwork, and the meal voucher incentives. In addition, the main activities the children participated in in the public library afterschool programs were finishing their homework and independent reading;other activities, such as reading together, receiving help with their homework, art projects, and games, were arranged by volunteers. Finally, the effects of these programs were improvements in relation to reading habits, reading interests, academic progress, learning vision, interpersonal relationships, etiquette, and mental health. © 2022,Journal of Educational Media and Library sciences. The goal of the present study is to use prosodic information to improve automatic syntactic parsing of conversational speech in the Switchboard Corpus. To achieve this, an ensemble classifier, based on a Recurrent Neural Network, is developed to predict the parse with the highest Unlabelled Attachment Score (UAS) from the outputs of multiple dependency parsers, based on syntactic and prosodic features. The main syntactic features proposed, which we refer to as "dependency configurations," represent the relative dependency location of each of a pair of consecutive words. Empirical analysis indicates that configurations with a direct dependency between consecutive words are less likely to be associated with major prosodic breaks. Using syntactic features alone, the system achieved an improvement of 1.1% of UAS on the test set, above the best parser in the ensemble, while using syntactic features combined with prosodic features (pauses and normalized duration) led to a further improvement of 0.4%. Both empirical analysis of dependency configurations and parsing improvement suggest a relationship between prosody and direct dependency relationships between consecutive words. © 2020 International Speech Communications Association. Genie: A new, fast, and outlier-resistant hierarchical clustering algorithm

The time needed to apply a hierarchical clustering algorithm is most often dominated by the number of computations of a pairwise dissimilarity measure. Such a constraint, for larger data sets, puts at a disadvantage the use of all the classical linkage criteria but the single linkage one. However, it is known that the single linkage clustering algorithm is very sensitive to outliers, produces highly skewed dendrograms, and therefore usually does not reflect the true underlying data structure - unless the clusters are well-separated. To overcome its limitations, we propose a new hierarchical clustering linkage criterion called Genie. Namely, our algorithm links two clusters in such a way that a chosen economic inequity measure (e.g., the Gini- or Bonferroni-index) of the cluster sizes does not increase drastically above a given threshold. The presented benchmarks indicate a high practical usefulness of the introduced method: it most often outperforms the Ward or average linkage in terms of the clustering quality while retaining the single linkage speed. The Genie algorithm is easily parallelizable and thus may be run on multiple threads to speed up its execution further on. Its memory overhead is small: there is no need to precompute the complete distance matrix to perform the computations in order to obtain a desired clustering. It can be applied on arbitrary spaces equipped with a dissimilarity measure, e.g., on real vectors, DNA or protein sequences, images, rankings, informetric data, etc. A reference implementation of the algorithm has been included in the open source genie package for R. Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that quietly steals human memory. This study analyzed hippocampal volume in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Normal Cognition (NC) using MRI image slices from the ADNI database and YOLOv8 instance segmentation. We used 300 images to segment the left and right hippocampal. This study focused on volume calculation from five MRI image slices. The results showed 0.98 (AD), 0.92 (MCI), and 0.90 (NC) and revealed significant volumetric differences showed in the NC class (P = 0.045). This suggests early neuroanatomical changes can occur without cognitive symptoms, highlighting the potential of deep learning in the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases.

Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease and patients do not always manage the disease properly. Therefore, creating tools that help diabetics self-manage their condition over time is of the utmost importance. Technological tools that include features meeting this population's needs, with an integrated personalized feedback system, in an environment of gamified incentives, may be the way for developing a sustained app's usage. This work aims to present a still in development, novel approach to managing diabetes type 2 with a focus on data analysis from user-inputs, gamification, and personalized coaching, with an accessible user interface. Thus, we will present some functionalities, in particular the theoretical and practical concept that is behind this development, namely the Transtheoretical model of behavior change to create different profiles, to provide customized feedback according to the user's behavioral stage, and also to ascertain if it induces any improvement at the behavioral level.

Search engine privacy has not been an option for web exploration in the past. Search history returns to users as personalized merchandise promotion from search engine companies. Here we demonstrate a privacy-guaranteed internet search method, provided with the entire article as a query, can be correctly carried out without revealing users' sensitive content by a degenerate, irreversible, encoding scheme and an efficient FM-index search routine, generally used in the next-generation sequencing. In our solution, Sapiens Aperio Veritas Engine (S.A.V.E.), every word in the query is encoded into one of 12 "amino acids" comprising a pseudo-biological sequence (PBS) at users' local machines. The PBS-mediated plagiarism detection is done by users' submission of locally encoded PBS through our cloud service to locate duplicates in the collected web contents, currently including all the English and Chinese Wikipedia pages and Open Access journal articles, as of April 2021, which had been encoded in the same way as the query. It is found that PBSs with a length longer than 12, comprising a combination of more than 12 "amino acids", can return correct results with a false positive rate © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.
