Context: The technical debt (TD) concept describes a tradeoff between short-term and long-term goals in software development. While it is highly useful as a metaphor, it has utility beyond the facilitation of discussion, to inspire a useful set of methods and tools that support the identification, measurement, monitoring, management, and payment of TD. Objective: This study focuses on the identification of TD. We evaluate human elicitation of TD and compare it to automated identification. Method: We asked a development team to identify TD items in artifacts from a software project on which they were working. We provided the participants with a TD template and a short questionnaire. In addition, we also collected the output of three tools to automatically identify TD and compared it to the results of human elicitation. Results: There is little overlap between the TD reported by different developers, so aggregation, rather than consensus, is an appropriate way to combine TD reported by multiple developers. The tools used are especially useful for identifying defect debt but cannot help in identifying many other types of debt, so involving humans in the identification process is necessary. Conclusion: We have conducted a case study that focuses on the practical identification of TD, one area that could be facilitated by tools and techniques. It contributes to the TD landscape, which depicts an understanding of relationships between different types of debt and how they are best discovered. Copyright 2013 ACM.

We identified and organized a number of statements about technical debt (TD Folklore list) expressed by practitioners in online websites, blogs and published papers. We chose 14 statements and we evaluated them through two surveys (37 practitioners answered the questionnaires), ranking them by agreement and consensus. The statements most agreed with show that TD is an important factor in software project management and not simply another term for 'bad code'. This study will help the research community in identifying folklore that can be translated into research questions to be investigated, thus targeting attempts to provide a scientific basis for TD management. © 2013 IEEE.

Graph similarity measurement has been used in many applications, such as computational biology, text mining, pattern recognition, and computer vision. In this paper, we apply similarity measurement on graphs to measure structural differences in financial statements. Unconventional financial statement structures may potentially reveal deceptive intention of hiding certain information while making technically “correct” financial statements. Furthermore, unconventional financial statements may also lead to investment opportunities if legitimacy is not questioned. We construct an algorithm based on the metric of string edit distance as an approximation of graph similarity, and apply the Levenshtein algorithm with modified string edit costs to measure string edit distance. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm in capturing the sensitive changes of balance sheet structures by applying the algorithm in two experiments. The first experiment shows the algorithm is sensitive to all three basic edits (namely deletion, insertion and substitution) on a particular balance sheet, and the second experiment shows more than 90% clustering accuracy on real balance sheets.

In this paper we report on the evolution of Apache Ant, a build automation tool developed in Java. We observed a typical case of architectural mismatch in this system: its original simple design was lost due to maintenance and addition of new features. We have applied SBSE techniques to determine whether the search would be able to recover at least parts of the original design, in a metrics-based optimization. We observed that current SBSE techniques produce complex designs, but they also allow us to study the limitations of present design metrics. In the end, we propose a new research perspective joining software clustering and refactoring selection to improve software evolution. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

A dark pool is a securities trading venue with no published market depth feed. Such markets have traditionally been utilized by large institutions as an alternative to public exchanges to execute large block orders which might otherwise impact settlement price. It is estimated that the trading volume of dark pool markets was 9% to 12% of the total U.S. equity market share volume in 2010 [1]. This phenomenon raises questions regarding the fundamental value of securities traded through dark pool markets and their impact on the price discovery process in traditional “visible” markets. In this paper, we establish a modeling framework for dark pool markets through agent-based modeling. It presents and validates the costs and benefits of trading small orders in dark pool markets. Simulated trading of 78 selected stocks demonstrates that dark pool market traders can obtain better execution rate when the dark pool market has more uninformed traders relative to informed traders. In addition, trading stocks with larger market capitalization yields better price improvement in dark pool markets.

Dynamic adaptation is the customization of a business process to make it applicable to a particular situation at any time of its life cycle. Adapting requires experience, and involves knowledge about various, internal and external, aspects of business. Thus, we argue for the application of adaptation rules, considering the context of a particular process instance. Furthermore, we state that a context-based adaptation environment should go beyond, and learn from decisions, as well as continuously identify new unforeseen situations (context definitions). The aim of this paper is to present a computational engine that infers the need to update situations and adaptation rules, suggesting changes to them. An application scenario is presented to discuss the usage of the proposal.

With the increased worldwide popularity of social networking services (SNSs), the leakage of a user's private information is becoming a serious problem. An increased number of users now have multiple accounts on various social networks and they tend to use each account to write different user experiments. Aggregating information from different accounts leads to the unintended leakage of personal information. Therefore, we argue that SNS users should be vigilant in protecting the relationship between multiple accounts. In this paper, we propose the use of Account Reachability, a measure of privacy risk which demonstrates the possibility of a stranger finding a user's private account based on information in their public account. In addition, we present ARChecker, a tool to calculate the value of account reachability. ARChecker also provides advice on how to modify the user's profiles and messages to decrease the privacy risk. By checking the privacy measure and modifying the profiles and messages of their SNS accounts, users can protect their multiple accounts from the risk of an unintended leakage of personal information. © 2013 ACM.

As the frequent occurrence of localized heavy rainfall due to abnormal climate and rapid urbanization, urban flood inundation is increasing unlike in the past. Especially the isolation of drivers and traffic congestion by flooding of the roads give considerable damage economically. In this study, the degrees of Flood Risk on the roads are estimated quantitatively using current accumulated rainfall on a rainy day via RSS Service of Weather Center. It should be effective that the isolation of drivers by flooding will be prevented beforehand. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

The number of VoIP users in Indonesia is very low, although the cost offered by VoIP is smaller than using pulsed phone. One of the reason is security provided by the VoIP service provider is still lacking. VoIP users have not received yet the security service to ensure the security of communications. This study tries to secure communications between VoIP users using encryption module that is integrated with VoIP client Sipdroid running on Android Smartphone. It is possible for VoIP users because VoIP client that can only be accessed by VoIP users. The result obtained after integration with encryption module using three encryption schemes, they are AES, DES, and RC4. Sipdroid able to resist passive attack from tapping information (eavesdropping) during the communication session. And the result of QoS measurements is an increase delay of 0.01 ms and no significant change in the throughput and the packet loss, for throughput generated about 78 kbps, and for the average packet loss is 0.8%. However there is a noise that follows the communication on Sipdroid integrated with the encryption module due to the wave skew from the increase time during the encryption process.
