This paper proposes a multiobjective heuristic search approach to support a project portfolio selection technique on scenarios with a large number of candidate projects. The original formulation for the technique requires analyzing all combinations of candidate projects, which is unfeasible when more than a few alternatives are available. We have used a multiobjective genetic algorithm to partially explore the search space of project combinations and select the most effective ones. We present an experimental study based on four project selection problems that compares the results found by the genetic algorithm to those yielded by a non-systematic search procedure. Results show evidence that the project selection technique can be used in large-scale scenarios and that GA presents better results than simpler search strategy. Weak link behavior in transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters creates the need for a more careful characterization of a device's thermal characteristics through its transition. This is particularly true for small TESs where a small change in the bias current results in large changes in effective transition temperature. To correctly interpret measurements, especially complex impedance, it is crucial to know the temperature-dependent thermal conductance, G(T ), and heat capacity, C(T ), at each point through the transition. We present data illustrating these effects and discuss how we overcome the challenges that are present in accurately determining G and T from I-V curves. We also show how these weak link effects vary with TES size. Additionally, we use this improved understanding of G(T ) to determine that, for these TES microcalorimeters, Kaptiza boundary resistance dominates the G of devices with absorbers while the electron-phonon coupling also needs to be considered when determining G for devices without absorbers © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2012.

This paper evaluates existing taxonomies aimed at characterizing the interaction between robots and their users and modifies them for health care applications. The modifications are based on existing robot technologies and user acceptance of robotics. Characterization of the user, or in this case the patient, is a primary focus of the paper, as they present a unique new role as robot users. While therapeutic and monitoring-related applications for robots are still relatively uncommon, we believe they will begin to grow and thus it isimportant that the spurring relationship between robot and patient is well understood.

Carbon metabolism, which is an important process underlying the plant development, has been extensively studied in model plant Arabidopsis, however the understanding in this process for cassava root crop is very little. To enhance our understanding into the process, we studied carbon partitioning during cassava root development at the transcriptional level via transciptomic data integration into the metabolic pathways. The transcriptome data of three different developmental stages of cassava roots—fibrous root (FR), developing storage root (DR), and mature storage root (MR) from Yang et al. [1] —was integrated into the key carbon metabolism pathways reconstructed following the protocol of Rongsirikul et al. [2] . According to the 43 differentially expressed genes (56 proteins IDs) mapped into the pathways, we found that the genes involved in starch biosynthesis are more up-regulated, in contrast to the expression of genes in the cell wall biosynthesis and respiration. The results may imply the significance of starch biosynthesis among the carbon utilization processes in the developing cassava roots. In other words, the carbon source from α-D-glucose-1-phosphate (G1P) might be mostly used for starch biosynthesis rather than cell wall biosynthesis and respiration pathways during cassava root development.

Availability of accurate location information of components decreases the search time and increases the chance of using shared resources. In our previously proposed framework, RFID tags are attached to components at an early stage of the lifecycle and their memory is used for various purposes throughout the lifecycle. In this paper, we propose to store various types of location-related information (e.g., current location, temporary location) on RFID tags. Details about how these data can help users (e.g., inspectors) find components in the operation phase are further elaborated. Furthermore, the paper discusses how the location data on tags can provide the users with their current location and predefined paths in the building. For example, a user equipped with an RFID reader is able to see his/her approximate location on a floor plan based on the information read from surrounding tags without having access to any Real-Time Location System. A case study is designed and implemented in a high-rise university building.

Dynamism of day-to-day activities in organizations is inextricably linked and there is a variety of information, insight and reasoning being processed between people and systems, in carrying out a business process. We argue that flexibility in processes could be managed in real time, using context information collected in the work environment. This paper proposes a context management architecture approach that aims to improve and automate dynamic process adaptation. We explain how process adaptation may occur in real time and discuss a scenario for this proposal © 2011 IEEE.
