In this paper we address the Stochastic Airport Bus Routing Problem (SABRP) where the availability of customers in the meeting points is randomly generated. We solve the problem by utilizing the stochastic programming recourse approach. The objective of our model is to minimize the cost of regular bus tours and the recourse cost when special taxis tours will be sent to specific customers. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper we present the development and evaluation of a parent decision support tool for a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), known as PPADS or Physician and Parent Decision Support. The NICU interprofessional (IP) team uses advanced technology to care for the sickest infants in the hospital, some at the edge of viability. Many difficult care decisions are made daily for this vulnerable population. The PPADS tool, a computerized decision support system, aims to augment current NICU decision-making by helping parents make more informed decisions, improving physician-parent communication, increasing parent decision-making satisfaction, decreasing conflict, and increasing decision efficiency when faced with ethically challenging situations. The development and evaluation of the PPADS tool followed a five step methodology: assessing the clinical environment, establishing the design criteria, developing the system design, implementing the system, and performing usability testing. Usability testing of the PPADS tool with parents of neonates who have graduated (survived) from a tertiary level NICU demonstrates the usefulness and ease of use of the tool.

Sliding mode control (SMC) has been considered as a powerful method for disturbances rejection. On the other hand, we have presented an equivalent-input disturbance (EID) approach to reject disturbances. This paper takes a dual-stage feed drive as an example to compare these two methods. The example shows that, while the EID approach obtains almost the same disturbance rejection performance for matched disturbances as that of the SMC does, it can reject unmatched disturbances. This shows the superiority of the EID approach over SMC method. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper follows the approach found in [6], but whereas [6] provides a fixed interpretation for connectives into [0,1] here we provide a characterization of a fuzzy semantics for connectives in such a way that the resulting fuzzy frames: K, T and D, are described precisely by the set of statements which also describes, respectively, the usual modal systems K, T and D. © 2011 IEEE.

Background: In bioinformatics projects, scientific workflow systems are widely used to manage computational procedures. Full-featured workflow systems have been proposed to fulfil the demand for workflow management. However, such systems tend to be over-weighted for actual bioinformatics practices. We realize that quick deployment of cutting-edge software implementing advanced algorithms and data formats, and continuous adaptation to changes in computational resources and the environment are often prioritized in scientific workflow management. These features have a greater affinity with the agile software development method through iterative development phases after trial and error. Here, we show the application of a scientific workflow system Pwrake to bioinformatics workflows. Pwrake is a parallel workflow extension of Ruby's standard build tool Rake, the flexibility of which has been demonstrated in the astronomy domain. Therefore, we hypothesize that Pwrake also has advantages in actual bioinformatics workflows. Findings. We implemented the Pwrake workflows to process next generation sequencing data using the Genomic Analysis Toolkit (GATK) and Dindel. GATK and Dindel workflows are typical examples of sequential and parallel workflows, respectively. We found that in practice, actual scientific workflow development iterates over two phases, the workflow definition phase and the parameter adjustment phase. We introduced separate workflow definitions to help focus on each of the two developmental phases, as well as helper methods to simplify the descriptions. This approach increased iterative development efficiency. Moreover, we implemented combined workflows to demonstrate modularity of the GATK and Dindel workflows. Conclusions: Pwrake enables agile management of scientific workflows in the bioinformatics domain. The purpose of this discussion panel is to present the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) human factors research needs to the larger human factors research community. The DOT Human Factors Coordinating Committee (HFCC) serves as a multi-modal team with government-wide liaisons to promote human factors and to address crosscutting human factors issues in transportation. HFCC regularly conducts a survey of the DOT modal agencies and other federal agencies with a transportation focus (e.g., the National Transportation Safety Board) to identify cross-cutting DOT research needs. In this panel, the results of a recent survey will be presented with a discussion of how each modal agency is addressing these human factors areas of interest. Additionally, HFCC representatives from five modal agencies will review their current research efforts, discuss their anticipated future research needs, and address questions from the audience.
