Since October 2005, the business and engineering faculties of the Milwaukee School of engineering (MSOE) have been working on a novel effort to integrate entrepreneurship into the engineering curricula. Our methods bring together business and engineering students, two groups that normally do not interact in their course of study, to work together on a team design project. The challenge is to introduce entrepreneurship education without significantly increasing the workload on faculty and students. With the help of a grant from the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network (KEEN) and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA), MSOE will offer entrepreneurship education to engineering students by formally integrating business topics into already ambitious business and engineering programs. In this paper, we present the joint findings and progress of the engineering college and the business school to develop an entrepreneurial spirit on our campus. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

In this paper, we first provide a new theoretical understanding of the Evidence Pre-propagated Importance Sampling algorithm (EPIS-BN) (Yuan & Druzdzel 2003;2006b) and show that its importance function minimizes the KL-divergence between the function itself and the exact posterior probability distribution in Polytrees. We then generalize the method to deal with inference in general hybrid Bayesian networks consisting of deterministic equations and arbitrary probability distributions. Using a novel technique called soft arc reversal, the new algorithm can also handle evidential reasoning with observed deterministic variables. In order to assist driver's vision, a real-time recognition system for traffic signs is proposed. After detecting sign candidates, biologically inspired opponent-color filters are used to extract symbol parts of signs. After normalizing the size of symbol, structural features are calculated to identify the sign. 5572 segmented images are used to design the algorithm. In a real-time system, the same sign in a sequence of frames is tracked, and a majority vote is used to integrate the recognition results. For test data, 93.8% recall rate and 99.3% precision rate could be attained. In-vehicle experiment also showed high recall and precision rates.

Some real problems are more naturally modeled by hybrid Bayesian networks that consist of mixtures of continuous and discrete variables with their interactions described by equations and continuous probability distributions. However, inference in such general hybrid models is hard. Therefore, existing approaches either only deal with special instances, such as Conditional Linear Gaussians (CLGs), or approximate a general model with a restricted version and then perform inference on the simpler model. However, results thus obtained highly depend on the quality of the approximations. This paper describes an importance sampling-based algorithm that directly deals with hybrid Bayesian networks constructed in the most general settings and guarantees to converge to the correct answers given enough time.

Knowledge elicitation is difficult for expert systems that are based on probability theory. The elicitation of probabilities for a probabilistic model requires a lot of time and interaction between the knowledge engineer and the expert. Druzdzel and van der Gaag [5] have proposed a theoretical framework that would allow the use of multiple types of probabilistic information for elicitation of Bayesian networks. This framework has been used as a starting point for the implementation of a non-invasive elication method. © 2007 ACM.

Promoting technological literacy for college-educated individuals requires attention to two aspects of technological literacy as it is currently defined. The mandate is for people to know more about the scientific underpinnings of technology and to acquire hands-on experience with technology that builds intuition about technology. The other aspect is that people in decision making positions of all types need to understand technology sufficiently in order to consider questions of impact. "If I decide to deploy a technology in a certain way, what might be the potential impact on the environment, on the culture of the people using the technology, and on the global society?" In order to produce graduates who have both characteristics, educators need to provide more courses with technical content that might be of interest to non-technical students and provide activities in technical courses that have traditionally been part of a liberal education curriculum. This paper summarizes the efforts of several faculty members in meeting the need for these two aspects of technological literacy. Of the four courses presented, two are core courses in social science with instruction in and experience with technology built in. The other two courses presented are technical courses which also present impact and context issues with respect to culture and society. The faculty involved plan to follow through with more formal study of the success of the four courses in meeting the goal of technological literacy. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Extracting the motion parameters of a moving humanoid is an important issue in machine vision. This is due to the need of emerging applications such as telepresence or robot navigation. In the context of telepresence, we consider a robot to be equipped with a stereo camera the pose of which has to be determined in a fast and robust way. The key issue is to compute the robust estimates of the (3times3) compatible essential matrices of the stereo cameras since the motion can then be uniquely estimated. In this paper, a robust technique that computes these entities is proposed under the assumption that the images are calibrated. The algorithm is based on the five-point relative pose problem using an optimization technique on a manifold. It determines these matrices by intersecting three essential manifolds. Test results show that the proposed method has a quadratic convergence rate and delivers accurate results. In addition, the algorithm has shown to exhibit better performance when compared to standard algorithms.

Multimedia tutorials available online are becoming popular as a means of providing canned explanations for difficult material for brick and mortar classes and online courses. The availability of free multimedia products like Flashplayer by Macromedia ©and the increasing proliferation of high speed access also provides the perfect set of circumstances to produce and make obtainable tutorials for K-12 children who may be especially challenged in some way. For instance, these tutorials would be appropriate and helpful for non-English speaking children to help them learn English and acclimate to their new American environment. This is the perfect time with the increasing Hispanic population within the borders of the United States. Students in the Computer Sciences and Computer information systems programs at Florida Institute of Technology have been working on such tutorials that have video, animation, audio, text, and images to help get across new ideas and topics to school age children. At the same time, software engineering methods for designing such tools are being developed and explored. The scope of this research is being extended to include audio in multiple languages for non-English speaking students. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. We discuss the program-level model used in the administration of undergraduate Capstone (senior design) projects in the Department of systems and information engineering at University of Virginia's School of engineering and Applied Science in this paper. A unique model at the time of its inception in 1988, its adoption by other institutions and its longevity are measures of its effectiveness and robustness. We provide an overview of the tasks performed by the various personnel involved in the administration of the undergraduate Capstone projects in chronological order, starting with activities performed during the summer recess, after a brief introduction to our Department's Capstone program. The goal of providing this "cookbook" review of the model is to provide sufficient information to allow other departments to adopt similar practices. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.
