This paper investigates vision based robot control based on a receding horizon control strategy, as a first step for a predictive visual feedback control. Firstly, the brief summary of the 3D dynamic visual feedback system with eye-in-hand configuration is given. Next, a stabilizing receding horizon control for the 3D dynamic visual feedback system, a highly nonlinear and relatively fast system, is proposed. The stability of the receding horizon control scheme is guaranteed by using the terminal cost derived from an energy function of the visual feedback system. Furthermore, simulation results are assessed with respect to the stability and the performance

This paper presents an ontology modeling and engineering approach to semantic description and integration of product development processes. Using OWL and OWL-S, the proposed method formalizes the underlying semantic representations of the product development process in domain object ontologies and the generic problem solving structures in domain task ontologies. Both the domain object and task ontologies are incorporated in the OWL-S based application service ontologies to facilitate the semantic process description and semantic service discovery, composition in the integration of product development processes. The approach has been applied to the development of ontological models for the consumer product development process in a pilot project of a national research program in Singapore namely the Integrated Manufacturing and Service systems (IMSS).

Achievement of a sustainable future implies a collaborative effort between a variety of stakeholders including industry, government, and academia. We are traveling in unfamiliar waters where the course is not always clear and the goals are sometimes daunting. To develop the environmental wisdom we need to help us know the "right answers" we must bring together the knowledge we get from our academic pursuits with the experience we obtain through trial and error. Bringing together the academic world and the business world not only helps us solve the immediate engineering need, it more importantly builds a partnership that will produce greater lasting value through students (future employees) who are attuned to the market demands for improved environmental performance in both business practices and products. This paper describes a new collaborative effort between Steelcase, Inc. and Kettering University that will prepare future engineers, managers, scientists, and policy makers for a workplace that places greater emphasis on conducting business within a framework of environmental and social responsibility. Since its founding in 1912, Steelcase, Inc. has approached its business from a "values driven" perspective focused on the underlying premise of how a responsible business should conduct itself. As such, Steelcase Inc. has been a leading company in promoting sustainable business practices both within the corporation and among a variety of other constituents. Kettering University (formerly GMI engineering and Management Institute) has been preparing engineers and managers for the workforce since 1919, emphasizing the importance of leadership, integrity, and practical experience as the keys to success in the workplace. Together these organizations, along with other partners, are committed to demonstrating the practical need for enhanced education in issues of sustainability and social responsibility. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The USAID PRIME Security Program Manager Computer Sciences Corporation in Arlington Virginia. He has MS degrees in information and telecommunications systems management and in military science. Cleveland has over 20 years of experience in the planning and management of a wide variety of functions including business process reengineering and IT security.

The USAID is an independent agency that provides economic, development, and humanitarian assistance around the world in support of the foreign policy goals of the United States. This paper proposes a new high-speed reclosing operation method to improve the stability in power system with the fault current limiter. From an angular velocity, a field system voltage and a phase of the generator, the proposed operation method calculates the optimum reclosing time domain. The fault current limiter is used the reactance type or the resistive type. The examination was carried out using the Inst. of Electrical Engineers of Japan one-machine infinite bus system model in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The Impact Ver2.3 was used in the computer simulation.

In this paper the authors propose a structural method for a genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization problem of cable routing in which cables have to be laid optimally. When there are no limits on the layout routes, the optimal routes for the individual cables can be found using the Dijkstra method in a finite discrete graph. However, when there are limits on the capacity in the layout routes, optimization cannot be performed using the Dijkstra method. The proposed GA is a two-level hierarchical GA that uses chromosome coding involving two levels. The routes for each cable and the combinations of cable routes are defined respectively, and layout route selection is optimized overall through genetic operations involving these levels. Block crossover and block mutation are used as genetic operations in the first level. In addition, a method to take advantage of lethal genes, which do not satisfy the constraints and are generated in the second level is used. Computer simulations confirm that the two-level hierarchical GA with these genetic operations functions effectively for the optimization problem of cable routing. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The results are reported in this paper. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Various techniques of autostereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display for displaying real 3D information have been investigated in recent years. We have performed research and application of integral videography (IV), which is an animated display technique based on the principle of integral photography (IP). Although IV and IP are ideal ways to display 3D images, their spatial viewing resolution and high-speed image rendering algorithm must be improved. The pixel pitch of the display and the lens pitch are the main factors affecting IV image quality. We improved the image quality by increasing the number and density of the pixels. Parallel image processing and displaying method were also developed for animated IV imaging. We have created a scalable high-resolution image using multiple projection and project it onto a small screen to achieve high-density pixels using long-focal-length projection optics. Furthermore, an image calibration method was developed for geometrical correction and color modulation to generate seamless IV images. We evaluated the developed device by displaying an X-ray computed tomography (CT) image. Measurement of the geometrical accuracy of the reproduced IV images demonstrated that the spatial resolution of the display system matched that by theoretical analysis. Experimental results showed that our technique is very effective in obtaining 3D animated images with practical spatial resolution. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.
