In a core disruptive accident (CDA) of a Fast Breeder Reactor, the post accident heat removal (PAHR) is crucial for the accident mitigation. The molten core material should be solidified in the sodium coolant in the reactor vessel. In the present experiment, molten material is injected into water to experimentally obtain fragments and the visualized information of the fragmentation. The distributed particle behaviour of the molten material jet is observed with high-speed video camera. The distributions of the fragmented droplet diameter from the molten material jet are evaluated by correcting the solidified particles. The experimental results of the mean fragmented droplet diameter are compared with the existing theories. Consequently, the fragmented droplet diameter is close to the value estimated based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Once the particle diameter of the fragmented molten, material could be known from a hydrodynamic model, it becomes possible to estimate the mass ratio of the molten particle to the total injected mass by combining an appropriate heat transfer model The mass ratio of the molten fragment to total mass of the melted mixed oxide fuel in sodium coolant estimated in the present study is very small. The result means that most of the molten mixed oxide fuel material injected into the sodium coolant can be cooled down under the solidified temperature, if the amount of the coolant is sufficient.

In computational astrophysics, the effect of gravity is essential even with very heavy computation of O(N2) for N particles. Several special purpose machines have been implemented as gravity engine to handle this problem extremely fast, however there are few sites in the world to operate such systems. We have developed a grid environment to access such a system based on grid-RFC, named HMCS-G. Using HMCS-G, a multi-physical computational astrophysics simulation can be performed with the combination of a PC-cluster and the gravity engine GRAPE-6. In typical size of problems for galaxy formation, however, the computation power of PC-cluster is much weaker than that of GRAPE-6, and we need multiple sets of PC-clusters to share the power of GRAPE-6 on grid environment. We have developed such a system using OmniRPC, a grid-enabled RPC system. In this system, OmniRPC are used both to distribute jobs for parameter search on multiple PC-clusters and to access GRAPE-6 server from these clusters. We performed an actual problem to search several formations of galaxy on this system, and confirmed such a solution is useful for wide variety of computational astrophysics research.

With the advance of network technology in recent years, the dissemination and exchange of massive documents has become commonplace. Accordingly, the importance of content analysis techniques is increasing. Topic analysis in large-scale document streams such as E-mails and news articles is an important research issue. This paper addresses techniques for "topic activation analysis" for document streams. For example, when news articles with a strong relationship to a given topic arrive frequently in a news stream, we can regard the activation level of the topic as high. In [I], Kleinberg proposed a method for analyzing document streams. Although the main objective of his method was to detect bursts of topics, it can also be used for topic activation analysis. His method, however, has a serious limitation in that it only looks at the arrival rate of documents and ignores the degree of relevance for each document. Another limitation is that his method is "batch-oriented." This paper first proposes a novel topic activation analysis scheme that incorporates both document arrival rate and relevance to address the first problem. It then presents an incremental scheme more appropriate for a document streaming environment. The proposed schemes are validated by experiments using real CNN news articles. Copyright 2005 ACM.

This paper documents the development of portable kit for testing and mapping water quality in the field, Previously, thorough testing and reporting on well water quality required multiple steps, including costly and time-consuming lab work that often made such testing impractical. To address this problem, a water sampling kit was created that consists of a pocket PC, a GPS receiver and probes to test for pollutants. The kit automatically records the geographical coordinates at the water sampling site, as well as the data collected by the probes into one spreadsheet. The data is then linked to a GIS for display in a simple and usable manner. The efficiency of the kit gives it the potential to create a new standard for sampling water, particularly in the case of private wells, which are currently inadequately monitored due to scarce state resources, This paper describes the process of researching, designing, and testing the water sampling system.

This paper presents a novel approach to plan an optimal joint trajectory for a manipulator robot performing a compliant motion task. In general, a two-step scheme are deployed to find the optimal robot joint curve. Firstly, we approximate the functional and use Newton's iteration to numerically calculate the joint trajectory's intermediate discretized points, instead of solving a corresponding nonlinear, implicit Euler-Lagrange equation. Secondly, we interpolate these points to get the final joint curve in a way such that the motion constraints will always be sustained throughout the movement. An example of motion planning for a 4-degree-of-freedom robot WAM are given at the end of this paper

This paper presents a joint space formulation for robot manipulator's hybrid motion/force control. The motivations come from 1) extending the previous work to general (either constrained or redundant) robots; and 2) improving the robustness against disturbances originated at the joint level. Contact geometry and closed-loop dynamics are derived in this paper, also a joint space hybrid control scheme is proposed. At the end, we show some simulation results to verify the applicability of our theory on a constrained (4-degree-of-freedom) robot WAM.
