Ambience is an abstract concept of sensory information. If we can control sensory information, then we will be able to somehow provide ambience as needed. We developed a controllable ambience model using the entropy of distribution functions based on this hypothesis. We adapted the model to several sensory modes, such as facial expressions, tones, and unobjective figures written in HTML and JavaScript available on any browser. Smart homes contain many useful appliances that can help individuals live independently for longer. A problem with current smart homes prototypes is that each device often has its own remote control or control unit. These control units are often manufactured by different suppliers with totally different and inconsistent user interfaces. This is confusing for most individuals and become a huge barrier for individuals with reduced cognitive function. This paper thus introduces a conceptual sketch of a universal and ubiquitous control wheel, termed UbiWheel that is designed to control most appliances in the home. The user simply moves the controller to the proximity of the device be controlled and adjust parameters by simply twisting the wheel, thereby preventing inactivity as the user need to move around the home. The household sector in Pakistan became the largest consumer of electricity which is responsible for more than 51% of the national consumption. The Building Energy Code of Pakistan was developed in 1990, yet the institutional setup regarding energy efficiency & conservation is inadequate. There is lack of experts and implementation of policies at national and provincial level. The study aims to explore the energy efficiency and conservation policies in Pakistan and their impact on reducing household energy consumption. The issues related to the implementation of policies across the country have been further discussed. The paper provides an overview of the energy sector and its challenges related to residential buildings. Energy policies, standards and literature related to building sector were analyzed and discussed with the experts. Moreover, suggestions and recommendations are made for the possible solutions and improvement of the existing situation.

The 2011 Thailand Floods heavily impacted 7 industrial complexes, in which 56.7% were Japanese companies. Many notable companies received severe damage until they had to cease their production. Area Business Continuity Management (Area-BCM) implemented in Thailand stems from this disaster which causes both private and public sectors to think about their business sustainability. The Area-BCM project is an on-going implementation in Thailand aiming to enhance collaboration among stakeholders in industrial areas for coping with upcoming threats. One of the most significant factors before launching a plan is to understand individual attitudes and perceptions pertaining to the Area-BCM project for the best practice, effective and continuous outcomes. This study aims to investigate various factors that affect the perceived usefulness (PU) about implementing Area-BCM. Our proposed research model is developed aligning with the behavioral model and factors influencing flood mitigation consisting of Subjective norms, Experience, Worry about flooding, and Flood hazard knowledge. Questionnaires were distributed to employees in the industrial areas which were flooded in 2011. The developed model was tested by Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results consequently show that subjective norms and flood hazard knowledge significantly influence perceived usefulness. This can be implied that, in an organization, major thoughts of related people could shape individual perceptions about using a disaster management plan. Moreover, the governmental and local authorities should be a significant force, that helps support plan implementation and educate people about disaster knowledge.

Land use reflects human activities on *** land use is the highest level human alteration on Earth,and it is rapidly changing due to population increase and *** areas have widespread effects on local hydrology,climate,biodiversity,and food production[1,2].However,maps,that contain knowledge on the distribution,pattern and composition of various land use types in urban areas,are limited to city *** mapping standard on data sources,methods,land use classification schemes varies from city to city,due to differences in financial input and skills of mapping *** address various national and global environmental challenges caused by urbanization,it is important to have urban land uses at the national and global scales that are derived from the same or consistent data sources with the same or compatible classification systems and mapping *** is because,only with urban land use maps produced with similar criteria,consistent environmental policies can be made,and action efforts can be compared and assessed for large scale environmental ***,despite of the fact that a number of urban-extent maps exist at global scales[3,4],more detailed urban land use maps do not exist at the same *** at big country or regional levels such as for the United States,China and European Union,consistent land use mapping efforts are rare[5,6](e.g.,https://***/open_land_use/).

Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI) is a new and quickly developing discipline, which is closely related to HCI and is making reference to some of its theoretical frameworks and research methodologies. The first edition of the Workshop on Research Methods in ACI (RM4ACI) was co-located with the Third International Conference on Animal-Computer Interaction, which took place in Milton-Keynes, UK in November 2016. This paper presents an overview of the workshop, including insights from discussions on some of the challenges faced by the ACI community as it works to develop ACI as a discipline, and on important opportunities for cross-fertilization between HCI and ACI that the HCI community could consider. Climate change, resource depletion, and worldwide urbanization feed the demand for more energy and resource-efficient buildings. Increasingly, architectural designers and consultants analyze building designs with easy-to-use simulation tools. To identify design alternatives with good performance, designers often turn to optimization methods. Randomized, metaheuristic methods such as genetic algorithms are popular in the architectural design field. However, are metaheuristics the best approach for architectural design problems that often are complex and ill defined? Metaheuristics may find solutions for well-defined problems, but they do not contribute to a better understanding of a complex design problem. This paper proposes surrogate-based optimization as a method that promotes understanding of the design problem. The surrogate method interpolates a mathematical model from data that relate design parameters to performance criteria. designers can interact with this model to explore the approximate impact of changing design variables. We apply the radial basis function method, a specific type of surrogate model, to two architectural daylight optimization problems. These case studies, along with results from computational experiments, serve to discuss several advantages of surrogate models. First, surrogate models not only propose good solutions but also allow designers to address issues outside of the formulation of the optimization problem. Instead of accepting a solution presented by the optimization process, designers can improve their understanding of the design problem by interacting with the model. Second, a related advantage is that designers can quickly construct surrogate models from existing simulation results and other knowledge they might possess about the design problem. designers can thus explore the impact of different evaluation criteria by constructing several models from the same set of data. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]).
