In previous work we have introduced and discussed the execution monitoring paradigm Ontological Control (OC). The fundamental idea of OC is that the execution of a controller for a hybrid system should be monitored and that discrepancies between expected behavior (according to some model) and real behavior should be detected and classified as being either due to external actions (disturbances) or due to violations of ontological assumptions (faulty expectations or inadequate model). In this paper we report a first set of experimental results where the OC theory has been implemented and tested on data from a real process control system: The ABB STRESSOMETER rolling mill flatness control system.

The authors discuss multimedia data communications using the Internet from the standpoint of providing services, and propose a cost model based on multilevel complex objects for the purpose of responding to the various needs of users. The proposed cost model creates multiple levels of the service which provide each element of the complex object, and then introduces the concept of `service ranges' that can dynamically vary the service which can be received within the scope of the price paid. Conventional multimedia data can only provide one service. However, the authors' service can be selected dynamically from within a range based on the price paid by the user. In order to evaluate these methods, the authors created a framework which can be applied to 3DCG content using VRML by using Java and OODBMS. In addition, rights such as copyrights that are frequently a part of 3DCG content must be protected. The proposed multilevel complex object can confirm a user's rights by using a built-in user authentication function. Thus, copyright management features that provide services within a service range available to valid users and block out illegal users can be realized.

All throughout the computer science community object-orientation is accepted as being built upon the same basic concepts that human beings use to apprehend reality. This misconception, as we think, is what we focus on in this paper. To show this we analyse two well-recognised object-oriented systems development methods. We try to pinpoint in what way these methods do not correspond to the way human beings apprehend reality in terms of objects. We show that the methods do not use the concepts of object or class in a manner that corresponds to the way human beings use them to apprehend reality. Furthermore the method-creators do not separate the notion of an object and its representation in a model. We also suggest a better adaptation of the searching-for-objects model based on how human beings apprehend reality. When analysing, one should focus on the purpose of the actions and the two different modes with which an object can be treated: present-at-hand and readiness-to-hand. This will increase the conformity between object-orientation and the way human beings apprehend reality.
