The increased availability of global communication infrastructures allows providers and users of various application services to cooperate in nearly unlimited geographic scopes. Problems of heterogeneity and scale have motivated specific standardisation activities for client/server "trading" or service "mediation" components. Motivated by current limitations of the emerging ODP (Open Distributed Processing) trader, this paper argues for a broader concept of general service "mediation" as more appropriate for realistic open distributed environments. The proposed mediation concept addresses some of the heterogeneity and flexibility requirements of open service co-operation by a uniform "Service Interface Description Language" (SIDL). The goal is to support distributed application development for a "Common Open Service Market" (COSM) by facilitating flexible service selection and client/server interaction. The paper also presents basic components of a generalised trading and mediation architecture as well as the status of a prototype implementation.< >

An image processing and object tracking approach is proposed for the design of a video-based freeway traffic monitoring system. Proper estimation of the traffic speed in different lanes of a freeway allows for timely detection of possible congestions. The proposed method consists of a road modeling stage and a vehicle tracking stage. In the first stage, a three-dimensional model of the background road image is generated. In the tracking stage, each car in the scene is isolated and tracked over many frames. Experimental results on frame sequences taken from Santa Ana area freeways are presented.< >

The Tioga system applies a boxes and arrows programming notation to allow nonexpert users to graphically construct database applications. Users connect database procedures using a dataflow model. Browsers are used to visualize the resulting data. This paper describes extensions to the Tioga browser protocol. These extensions allow sophisticated, flight-simulator navigation through a multidimensional data space. This design also incorporates wormholes to allow tunneling between different multidimensional spaces. Wormholes are shown to be substantial generalizations of hyperlinks in a hypertext system. These powerful mechanisms for relating data provide users with great flexibility. For example, users can create magnifying glasses that provide an enhanced view of the underlying data.< >

Methods for entering text on pen-based computers were compared with respect to speed, accuracy, and user preference. Fifteen subjects entered text on a digitizing display tablet using three methods: hand printing, QWERTY-tapping, and ABC-tapping. The tapping methods used display-based keyboards, one with a QWERTY layout, the other with two alphabetic rows of 13 characters. ABC-tapping had the lowest error rate (0.6%) but was the slowest entry method (12.9 wpm). It was also the least preferred input method. The QWERTY-tapping condition was the most preferred, the fastest (22.9 wpm), and had a low error rate (1.1%). Although subjects also liked hand printing, it was 41% slower than QWERTY-tapping and had a very high error rate (8.1%). The results suggest that character recognition on pen-based computers must improve to attract walk-up users, and that alternatives such as tapping on a QWERTY soft keyboard are effective input methods.
