Microprocessor development has now made it possible to automate many functions previously performed manually in the cockpit. While the automatic equipment is generally reliable and works well if operated properly, it may also be misused, if designers fail to properly consider human factors in their design. Misuse or underuse may result in accidents, incidents, or sub-optimal system performance. This paper discusses the general problem of human factors in cockpit automation, and reports preliminary findings from a human factors study of the operational experience of airline pilots transitioning from older DC-9 aircraft to the McDonnell-Douglas DC-9-80.

Classical Unconnected Set (UCS) and other iterative placement improvement algorithms may converge slowly toward desirable component arrangements. This paper discusses mechanisms that inhibit convergence, then proposes techniques for accelerating rate of improvement. A placer incorporating these procedures is described, and experimental results demonstrating effectiveness of the approach are given. © 1980 ACM.

In the spirit of the previous axiomatixation of the programming language Pascal, this paper describes Hoare-style proof rules for Euclid, a programming language intended for the expression of system programs which are to be verified. The 2nd International Workshop on Statistical Methods in Video Processing, SMVP 2004, was held in Prague, Czech Republic, as an associated workshop of ECCV 2004, the 8th European Conference on computer Vision. A total of 30 papers were submitted to the workshop. Of these, 17 papers were accepted for presentation and included in these proceedings, following a double-blind review process. The workshop had 42 registered participants. The focus of the meeting was on recent progress in the application of - vanced statistical methods to solve computer vision tasks. The one-day scienti?c program covered areas of high interest in vision research, such as dense rec- struction of 3D scenes, multibody motion segmentation, 3D shape inference, errors-in-variables estimation, probabilistic tracking, information fusion, optical ?owcomputation,learningfornonstationaryvideodata,noveltydetectionin- namic backgrounds, background modeling, grouping using feature uncertainty, and crowd segmentation from video. This open access book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” priority program 1593, which was launched by the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”) to develop new approaches to software engineering with a specific focus on long-lived software systems. The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process.;Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes. In turn, the last part of the book presents key findings and spin-offs. The individual chapters there describe various case studies, along with their benefits, deliverables and the respective lessons learned. An overview of future research topics rounds out the coverage.;The book was mainly written for scientific researchers and advanced professionals with an academic background.
