The recent advances in Grid and Cloud computing make new types of applications possible. At the same time, they require an infrastructure to implement heterogeneous computing resources time and cost-savely. Here, approaches that utilize design patterns, i.e., proven solutions to existing problems, seem to provide a good approach to enable these kind of applications. In this paper, we investigated which design patterns are already used in the area of Grid computing nowadays. After a brief description of the literature study design, we present our findings which include the discovered design patterns, corresponding categories, and application areas.

The positive impact of an organization's information technology (IT) Governance maturity level on the organization's business performance has been stated by many researchers in the IT governance literature. However, there are reports that casted a doubt on such a claim. This study, yet another exploration on the subject, is aimed at investigating any correlation between a company's IT governance maturity level and its business performance - represented by a number of productivity measures. The company under this study is a publicly-listed company in the IT services industry. The IT governance maturity level is measured using the maturity model provided by Control Objective for information and Related technology (COBIT) version 4.1. The productivity measures are the profit per employee and the total factor productivity. Through a non-parametric statistical hypothesis testing method - the Spearman Rank Correlation Test - a positive correlation is found between the maturity level and the profit-based productivity measure, but not the total factor productivity measure. Investigating the latter result, we discovered an interesting observation that might explain why some studies did not find any positive correlation between the maturity level and certain business performance measures. In our case, we found that there was an apparent time lag between the improvement of the company's IT Governance maturity level and the increase in the company's productivity level. © 2011 Universitas Indonesia.

The quantity of information on nanomaterial properties and behavior continues to grow rapidly. Without a concerted effort to collect, organize and mine disparate information coming out of current research efforts, the value and effective use of this information will be limited at best. Data will not be translated to knowledge. At worst, erroneous conclusions will be drawn and future research may be misdirected. Nanoinformatics can be a powerful approach to enhance the value of global information in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Much progress has been made through grassroots efforts in nanoinformatics resulting in a multitude of resources and tools for nanoscience researchers. In 2012, the nanoinformatics community believed it was important to critically evaluate and refine currently available nanoinformatics approaches in order to best inform the science and support the future of predictive nanotechnology. The Greener Nano 2012: Nanoinformatics Tools and Resources Workshop brought together informatics groups with materials scientists active in nanoscience research to evaluate and reflect on the tools and resources that have recently emerged in support of predictive nanotechnology. The workshop goals were to establish a better understanding of current nanoinformatics approaches and to clearly define immediate and projected informatics infrastructure needs of the nanotechnology community. The theme of nanotechnology environmental health and safety (nanoEHS) was used to provide real-world, concrete examples on how informatics can be utilized to advance our knowledge and guide nanoscience. The benefit here is that the same properties that impact the performance of products could also be the properties that inform EHS. From a decision management standpoint, the dual use of such data should be considered a priority. Key outcomes include a proposed collaborative framework for data collection, data sharing and information integration. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The success of an e-Learning system depends on several factors: a supportive infrastructure, high-quality content, effective format, and high availability to satisfy ongoing user needs. In this paper, we perform exploratory data analysis and data mining on an e-Learning web log, which spans one academic year. The study uncovers the e-Learning users' usage behavior in accessing the content. The study discovers e-Learning media popularity and usage patterns, and helps the institution fine tune future courseware, from strategic changes to the fine-grain of lesson content improvement. © 2011 IEEE.

Monitoring every single email takes a lot of effort especially when the size of email transaction log is very large. This study proposed to find a wise option to monitor only the contents of important emails. Depth First Search algorithm, multi-digraph, email scoring model, WordNet, and Vector Space Model are used to create a model for filtering important emails and mining email contents. The findings showed that using email filtering module together with term enhancing module can help in reducing the processing time and keeping high precision and recall values of the system. © 2011 AICIT.

A microfluidic lab-on-a-chip Coulter counter was demonstrated to count micro particles and leukocytes from whole blood. Instead of electroplated or deposited metal electrodes, off-the-shelf gold pins were used as electrodes to simplify fabrication process, reduce cost, enhance device durability, and above all, achieve superior uniformity in E-field distribution for improved signal quality. A custom-designed, low-cost demodulation circuit was developed to detect the AC impedance signals of the particles and cells passing the detection area defined by the microfluidic channels. A mixture of polystyrene beads with three different sizes was used to characterize the device. The results showed high throughput at 2000 particles/s and clear separation among different sizes of beads with coefficients of variation (CV) of 13.53%, 10.35% and 5.67% for 7.66μm, 10.5μm and 14.7μmbeads, respectively. To demonstrate the potential for a point-of-care or self-administered device for cancer patients going through chemotherapy, we have used the lab-on-a-chip device to count leukocytes from whole blood, generating encouraging preliminary results comparable to the results from a commercial flow cytometer.

Automated agents for electricity markets, social networks, and other distributed networks must repeatedly interact with other intelligent agents, often without observing associates' actions or payoffs (i.e., minimal information). Given this reality, our goal is to create algorithms that learn effectively in repeated games played with minimal information. As in other applications of machine learning, the success of a learning algorithm in repeated games depends on its learning bias. To better understand what learning biases are most successful, we analyze the learning biases of previously published multi-agent learning (MAL) algorithms. We then describe a new algorithm that adapts a successful learning bias from the literature to minimal information environments. Finally, we compare the performance of this algorithm with ten other algorithms in repeated games played with minimal information. A specialization system is an axiomatic structure for specifying a set of atomic formulas and a set of specialization operations on them. This paper formalizes the concept of logical structure and presents three basic ways of logical structure construction, i.e., generating a logical structure from a specialization system, constructing a conjunctive logical structure, and logical structure morphing. Instantiations of the proposed framework in the context of first-order logic, clausal-form logic, and a basic description logic are illustrated. The merits of the framework in understanding different logical systems and logical structure extension are described. © 2011 IEEE.
