Supporting collaborative creativity with educational visualizations in 3D virtual worlds

Social media are known for substantial creativity support, as they allow users exploring, creating, and sharing various types of content. Social 3D virtual worlds, such as Second Life, can also be seen as a social media that have wide possibilities for being creative. In this paper, we explore how 3D virtual worlds can support creativity in educational settings, including creativity of the collaborative process and creativity of the outcome projects. We propose that this technology can support both. In order to test this proposal, we used the data collected in a case study that we conducted within Cooperation technology course at the Norwegian University of science and technology in 2011. The study was supported by the EU research project CoCreat. The data are discussed to present the challenges for supporting collaborative creativity with 3D virtual worlds, approaches to understanding the concept of creativity, and our experience in creativity evaluation. © 2014 Springer-Verlag.

The incorporation of an equivalent-input-disturbance estimator into a conventional sliding-mode control (SMC) system results in a new structure with improved disturbance rejection performance. This configuration enables an SMC system to reject unmatched disturbances. Simulation results for the positioning control of a dual-stage feed drive show that the method not only rejects unmatched disturbances, but also improves the disturbance rejection performance for matched disturbances, thereby demonstrating the validity of the design.

This research propose an image pattern classification to identify rust disease in sugarcane leaf with a combination of texture and color feature extraction. The purpose of this research is to find appropriate features that can identify sugarcane rust disease. Firstly, normal and diseased images are collected and pre-processed. Then, features of shape, color and texture are extracted from these images. After that, these images are classified by support vector machine classifier. A combination of several features are used to evaluate the appropriate features to find distinctive features for identification of rust disease. When a single feature is used, shape feature has the lowest accuracy of 51% and texture feature has the highest accuracy of 96.5%. A combination of texture and color feature extraction results a highest classification accuracy of 97.5%. A combination of texture and color feature extraction with polynomial kernel results in 98.5 % classification accuracy. © 2014 IEEE.

One of the factors that affect the security of a network or system is user authentication, so that at times it can be said to be no longer safe. Brute force attacks on password systems are a dominant (static) potential way to penetrate network security or user authentication systems. One way to overcome these drawbacks is to use the One Time Password (OTP) algorithm. OTP is a password security system using dynamic passwords. The password will be valid for one session only. In this research, the author will analyse the reliability of the OTP algorithm by applying it to a LEGO Mindstorms robot. The robot will be designed as part of a system where the user will be safe to enter the default password, and then the system will change the password every session. The results of the questionnaire showed that 79% of users felt more secure, but more than 60% said it was difficult to do.

In this paper, we present the first results of a study exploring how to support collaborative learning of surgical nursing students in a 3D virtual world. A Virtual Operating room, resembling the one at St. Olav's University Hospital in Trondheim, Norway was created in Second Life to accommodate an educational role-play. In this role-play, the operating nursing students could practice communication with patients and cooperation in the team while preparing patients for surgery. At the first stage of the evaluation, the virtual simulation has been tested among nine postgraduate nursing students. The participants gave their evaluation and opinions in the form of questionnaires and discussion after the role-plays. Following the analysis of the data, we present a summary of the most important results in this paper. This study provides a number of suggestions for improving the learning process when role-playing in a virtual environment. We demonstrate that an educational simulation can be implemented with limited resources, and yet be practically useful in education of health personnel. Further research with medical and nursing students is highly applicable and feasible, and should include a larger group of participants. In the next stage of our work, the evaluation of the Virtual Operating room has been conducted with nurses, who are on an earlier stage of their study program, as well as anesthesia nurses and non-medics. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are employing heterogeneous technologies now a days to meet the increasing demands of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications such as enriched multimedia, video conferencing, gaming and online collaboration. Deployment and maintenance cost for infrastructures are also a major concern. This work proposes a framework, capable of catering multiple technologies simultaneously (such as local area network, wide area networks and cellular networks), that deploys wired and wireless integrated technologies to exploit the advantages of both. Therefore, it offers the architecture based on radio over fiber technology to meet the future requirements of high data rate for Road Vehicle Communication (RVC) in VANETs and it comes up with the most important and perhaps desperately needed feature of ‘Future technology Support’ yielding very high data rates support. Several traditionally deployed architectures are striving to come up with the future needs but due to their various limitations they were unable to attain their expected outcomes. The proposed RoF based architecture justifies its need inducing a true value and powerful features to dramatically enhance the overall performance of the entire system. Several evaluation parameters have been chosen that clearly present the strength of proposed RoF framework and prove that RoF framework is the better option for the service providers in the area of ITS applications.

We report the results of an empirical evaluation of structural simplification of Bayesian networks by removing weak arcs. We conduct a series of experiments on six networks built from real data sets selected from the UC Irvine Machine Learning Repository. We systematically remove arcs from the weakest to the strongest, relying on four measures of arc strength, and measure the classification accuracy of the resulting simplified models. Our results show that removing up to roughly 20 percent of the weakest arcs in a network has minimal effect on its classification accuracy. At the same time, structural simplification of networks leads to significant reduction of both the amount of memory taken by the clique tree and the amount of computation needed to perform inference.
