Business processes modeling projects are increasingly widespread in organizations, which usually invest much in hiring expert consultants to do such job. These consultants come from various organizations, and have different experiences on how to perform the same activity. This paper analyzes how human-related capabilities influence the effort required to conduct a business process modeling project and discusses the results obtained from about 50 projects executed in a large Brazilian company. © 2012 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

The quantity of information on nanomaterial properties and behavior continues to grow rapidly. Without a concerted effort to collect, organize and mine disparate information coming out of current research efforts, the value and effective use of this information will be limited at best. Data will not be translated to knowledge. At worst, erroneous conclusions will be drawn and future research may be misdirected. Nanoinformatics can be a powerful approach to enhance the value of global information in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Much progress has been made through grassroots efforts in nanoinformatics resulting in a multitude of resources and tools for nanoscience researchers. In 2012, the nanoinformatics community believed it was important to critically evaluate and refine currently available nanoinformatics approaches in order to best inform the science and support the future of predictive nanotechnology. The Greener Nano 2012: Nanoinformatics Tools and Resources Workshop brought together informatics groups with materials scientists active in nanoscience research to evaluate and reflect on the tools and resources that have recently emerged in support of predictive nanotechnology. The workshop goals were to establish a better understanding of current nanoinformatics approaches and to clearly define immediate and projected informatics infrastructure needs of the nanotechnology community. The theme of nanotechnology environmental health and safety (nanoEHS) was used to provide real-world, concrete examples on how informatics can be utilized to advance our knowledge and guide nanoscience. The benefit here is that the same properties that impact the performance of products could also be the properties that inform EHS. From a decision management standpoint, the dual use of such data should be considered a priority. Key outcomes include a proposed collaborative framework for data collection, data sharing and information integration. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Spatially proximate amino acids in a protein tend to coevolve. A protein's three-dimensional (3D) structure hence leaves an echo of correlations in the evolutionary record. Reverse engineering 3D structures from such correlations is an open problem in structural biology, pursued with increasing vigor as more and more protein sequences continue to fill the data banks. Within this task lies a statistical inference problem, rooted in the following: correlation between two sites in a protein sequence can arise from firsthand interaction but can also be network-propagated via intermediate sites; observed correlation is not enough to guarantee proximity. To separate direct from indirect interactions is an instance of the general problem of inverse statistical mechanics, where the task is to learn model parameters (fields, couplings) from observables (magnetizations, correlations, samples) in large systems. In the context of protein sequences, the approach has been referred to as direct-coupling analysis. Here we show that the pseudolikelihood method, applied to 21-state Potts models describing the statistical properties of families of evolutionarily related proteins, significantly outperforms existing approaches to the direct-coupling analysis, the latter being based on standard mean-field techniques. This improved performance also relies on a modified score for the coupling strength. The results are verified using known crystal structures of specific sequence instances of various protein families. Code implementing the new method can be found at http://***/.

As the rapid growth of smart phone technology, people have a lot of digital image information such as digital photos or videos. Both data hiding and data compression are very important technologies in image processing field. On the overview, it seems that there is no relationship between data hiding and data compression because data hiding mechanisms focus on information security and data compression mechanisms emphasize the compression ratio. However, the more secret data is embedded, the more capacity the stego image increases. Actually, they are closely related. Until now, there are many literatures to discuss the secret data how to be embedded into the media image and keeps the original capacity as soon as possible. In this paper, a reversible data hiding scheme based on EMD data hiding and JPEG (Joint Picture Experts Group) compression technology will be proposed. According to experimental results, the authors can prove that our proposed scheme maintains high embedding capacity, security and good compression ratio.

There are two methods for detecting videos illegally recorded in theaters. One uses digital watermarks to identify on what dates and in what theaters such videos were recorded. The other method uses infrared light, which degrades such videos by using the difference between human and device sensitivities. However, neither method detects the act of recording a video. Therefore, these methods are not the best to prevent movies from being illegally recorded. Our previously proposed method uses reflected infrared light to identify places where surreptitious filming takes place (in this paper, we call a camera used for surreptitious filming a surreptitious filming camera (SFC)). This method focuses infrared light on places where surreptitious filming takes place and disrupts it. In addition, this method distinguishes camera lenses from other lenses, such as those for eyeglasses, to analyze the RGB of reflected infrared light. However, this method cannot capture reflected infrared light depending on a SFC's location and direction. As a result, we propose using a moving infrared detection camera (IDC) to solve these problems and a method for more effectively detecting reflected infrared light.

A variety of network deployments in disaster recovery, fire fighting and military scenarios create networks that do not form a connected network all the time. In such scenarios, paths between a source and destination may be created over time when nodes encounter each other due to node mobility. Many routing algorithms that can route messages in such delay-tolerant networking (DTN) settings have been proposed. Each of these proposals presents simulation and/or analytical results to demonstrate improved performance in comparison with other known protocols. This paper proposes a common framework that defines multiple important components through which performance of these protocols can be compared using simulation experiments. This framework includes performance metrics that can be used for comparison, simulation environment, new mobility models and results in organizing the various known protocols based on their ability to predict a path. In a case study using the framework, we demonstrate how the predictive ability of PROPHET may or may not result in significant performance gains, depending on the mobility model.

Biometrics recognition systems implemented in a realworld environment often have to be content with adverse biometrics signal acquisition which can vary greatly in this environment. This includes acoustic noise that can contaminate speech signals or artifacts that can alter heart sound signals. In order to overcome these recognition errors, researchers all over the world apply various methods such as normalization, feature extraction, classification to address this issue. Recently, combining biometrics modalities has proven to be an effective strategy to improve the performance of biometrics systems. The approach in this paper is based on biometrics recognition which used the heart sound signal as a feature that can't be easily copied The Mel- Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is used as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) is used as the matching model algorithm. A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart Sound Speaker identification (HS-SI) model is 81.9% while (S-SI) the rate for the Speech Speaker Independent model is 99.3% for a 21 client, 40 imposter database. Heart sound- speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%. In order to reach a higher security level an alternative to the above approach, which is based on multimodal and a fusion technique, is implemented into the system. The best performance of the work is based on simple-sum score fusion with a pricewise-linear normalization technique which provides an EER of 0.69%.

information kiosks, building directories, and area maps are useful for visitors to explore a new large place. Although several digital information or map systems have been equipped with touch screens, many existing systems are still regular non-interactive screens to display static or dynamic information. This motivates the authors to propose an efficient and economic solution to transform existing non-interactive information kiosks and maps into natural interactive systems that can accept pointing gestures, a common type of gestures in communication between people. The authors' vision-based method exploits the visual geometrical characteristics of pointing gestures thus is independent from skin color and can recognize pointing gestures with various pointing objects, such as fingers, bare hands, hands with gloves, or any arbitrary pointing objects. Experiments show that a single regular processor can process up to 10 interactive maps with less than 17ms with the average accuracy of more than 90%. Furthermore, by using template matching, a user can get the detailed guidance for the best route into his/her mobile device just by capturing the information being displayed in the interactive map.

The basic idea of Network Centric Warfare (NCW) is that data processing capabilities of computers and communication technologies of a network can be leveraged to guarantee information sharing, which will increase the efficiency of running a military. Amid advancements being made in IT, the Korea military is one of the militaries in the world doing research on ways of conducting more effective warfare, which it aims to achieve by connecting each of the entities together and sharing battlefield resources. However, maintaining interoperability between different systems is an issue, caused by the fact that different militaries have different tactics and weapon systems. In this paper, the current state of interoperability is examined, for when the Korean military builds a C4I system in preparation for future warfare. Furthermore, interoperability cases in the US are analyzed, and matters of consideration and various technologies for interoperability are proposed. © 2012 Springer science+Business Media.

This paper proposed an integration of heart sound and speech for biometrics application .The method the method selects the best fusion and normalization techniques for biometric system. The framework is developed and test the verification task. The approach in this paper is biometrics recognition, for example, providing features that can't be easily copied, such as the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) as a feature vector and vector quantization (VQ) as the matching model algorithm .A simple yet highly reliable method is introduced for biometric applications. Experimental results show that the recognition rate of the Heart sound-speaker verification (HS-SV) provides an average EER of 17.8% while the average EER for the speech speaker verification model (S-SV) is 3.39%.
