Accuracy Evaluation of A Diagnostic Test by Detecting Outliers and Influential Observations

Logit regression analysis is widely applied in scientific studies and laboratory experiments, where skewed observations on a data set are often encountered. A number of problems with this method, for example, oudiers and influential observations, can cause overdispersion when a model is fitted. In this study a systematic statistical approach, including the plotting of several indices is used to diagnose the lack-of-fit of a logistic regression model. The outliers and influential observations on data from laboratory experiments are then detected. Specifically we take account of the interaction of an internal sohtary wave （ISW） with an obstacle, i.e., an underwater ridge, and also analyze the effects of the ridge height, the lower layer water depth, and the potential energy on the amplitude-based transmission rate of the ISW. As concluded, the goodness-of-fit of the revised logit regression model is better than that of the model without this approach.

In Business-to-Consumer electronic commerce, enterprises have to contact with the consumers directly. Understanding the consumers is one of the most important things to enterprises. The characteristic of internet shopping is the purchase risk on internet is larger than that in physical stores. According to the risk degree consumers have perceived, products can be divided into three patterns: search goods, experience goods and credence goods. However, while doing internet shopping, it is not easy for consumers to evaluate credence goods;the study, therefore, tries to investigate the risk-reduction strategies used by consumers in purchasing search goods and experience goods. This paper examines in-depth the risk-reduction strategies of consumers when they select and purchase search goods and experience goods and compares its finding with literature regarding risk-reduction strategies. It is hoped that this finding serves as a reference for the companies that sell search goods and experience goods in their formulation of marketing strategies.

Small and medium enterprises constitute the majority of Taiwan's businesses, and entrepreneurship lies at the heart of these enterprises. A literature review shows that entrepreneurs' demographic characteristics and psychological traits have a crucial impact on entrepreneurial outcomes. Over the past few years, technological and vocational education in Taiwan has developed substantially, fostering many successful entrepreneurs. Completed questionnaires from 1,053 students from the Transworld Institute of technology in Taiwan and the Chinese Entrepreneur Aptitude Scale (CEAS), constructed by Chen and Wu [111, formed the basis of our empirical analysis. Our research objectives are as follows. First, we aim to explore the reliability and validity of the CEAS and to establish a normative score among surveyed students. Second, we compare the scaling scores differences between the genders, departments, and classes in the sample. Finally, we compare the student sample's CEAS results with models of Taiwanese entrepreneurial youth. We then discuss the findings in terms of their implications for entrepreneurial education and management and future research.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the technological structure of business methods in insurance. Concepts and techniques used in social network analysis are applied to a network of patents based on citation. By means of procedures drawing on the notion of structural equivalence, a set of blocks and positions of insurance business methods are delineated. This paper has focused its discussion on patent data of classification UPC705/4 to explore possible technological structure in insurance. The result of this research found that there are 4 clusters in the structure of technological network.

Teaching engineering and technology subjects involves conveying understanding of abstract information structures and processes such as complex telecommunications protocols, complex mathematical concepts, and data structures. These are multidimensional and can be difficult to grasp quickly. Supported by a Hewlett-Packard (HP) technology for Teaching grant, the School of Engineering and technology at National University has embarked on a project to enable students to grasp these complex concepts more quickly and easily, using continuous dialog among students and instructors as the structures are first introduced and then examined from multiple perspectives through real-time interaction among students, small groups, and instructors. HP Wireless Tablet PCs are used to discuss and experiment with diagrams and processes in realtime. This allows combining lectures and problem-solving sessions into a single class session. Our hypothesis is that: 1) an in-depth learning of theory is accomplished, and 2) student engagement is enhanced. Presentation of theory by the instructor is integrated with application while the theory is still in the student's short-term memory. Students no longer have to wait for a separate session such as a recitation session to apply the concepts. This approach often takes less time. In addition to accelerating the learning process, expert instructors find this approach more rewarding as students grasp new concepts more quickly. Analysis of data captured from both students and instructors are presented to support our hypotheses, and our results are compared with similar research carried out by other universities. In addition, the level of interaction enabled by the use of HP Tablets in on-line classes is discussed. The best teaching tools available in existing on-line teaching platforms are compared with the additional tools available in on-site courses when every student has a wireless Tablet PC and specific recommendations are made to on-line teachi

Wireless sensor network can be applied to both abominable and military environments. A primary goal in the design of wireless sensor networks is lifetime maximization, constrained by the energy capacity of batteries. One well-known method to reduce energy consumption in such networks is data aggregation. A spanning tree algorithm for data aggregation based on estimate cost was presented. The paper adopted directed transmission model and message route mechanism. The idea of this algorithm is optimization of data aggregation route by estimate cost about energy, distant and aggregation gain, and then realizes data aggregation trade-off in energy and delay. The benefits of the algorithm were verified through simulation experiments.

Clinical guidelines usually need to be adapted to fit local practice before they can be actually used by clinicians. Reasons for adaptation include variations of institution setting such as type of practice and location, availability of resources, differences in patient populations, local policies, and practice patterns. When a guideline is implemented for clinical decision support and integrated with an institution's clinical information system, the data model of the local electronic medical record (EMR) and the data actually collected and stored in it also influence the guideline's adaptation. The purpose of this work is: (1) to characterize a tool-supported process for guideline encoding that addresses local adaptation and EMR integration, and (2) to identify the types of changes in guideline encoding during the local adaptation process. © 2008 The authors and IOS Press. Recommendation accuracy is especially important in mobile e-commerce environments due to the limited screen size of mobile devices and relatively expensive connection costs. Mobile content tends to be fashionable and are geared for young users. This paper presents a novel method of building a more accurate recommender system for mobile content in a mobile ecommerce environment. The method is based on collaborative filtering, and models content diffusion and user preference transition and incorporates them in constructing pseudo ratings from implicit feedback data. In a variety of experiments, recommender systems based on the method showed significantly better recommendation accuracy than a pure collaborative filtering-based recommender system.

Epistemology – the study of knowledge and knowing – is of central concern to information science (Budd, 2001 ; Dick, 2002 ; Hjørland, 2002 ). Jesse Shera, who coined the term social epistemology with Margaret Egan, suggested that information science is intimately connected to the “production, flow, integration and consumption of all forms of communicated thought throughout the entire social fabric” (1970: 86). Aiding people in the acquisition of knowledge thus becomes the sine qua non of information services and technologies (Fallis, 2006 ). As social computing and advances in information and communications technologies (ICTs) change the way we seek and use information personally and professionally, it becomes critical that information scientists understand how social processes influence knowledge acquisition. This panel explores empirically and theoretically how people seek and construct knowledge in a social world.
