This conceptual paper discusses a graph-based approach for on-line terrain coverage, which has many important research aspects and a wide range of application possibilities, e.g in multi-agents. Such approaches can be used in different application domains, e.g. in medical image analysis. In this paper we discuss how the graphs are being generated and analyzed. In particular, the analysis is important for improving the estimation of the parameter set for the used heuristic in the field of route planning. Moreover, we describe some methods from quantitative graph theory and outline a few potential research routes. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

information systems underpin today’s business and entertainment. The means by which these information systems have been developed has changed over the years. Although the current paradigm is to use object-oriented concepts, a new set of concepts, focussed on agent technology, is starting to be evaluated. Agents offer higher level abstractions (than objects) for the conceptualization, design and implementation of information systems. Agents have autonomy, can reason and can coordinate within societies of agents. The AOIS series of workshops explores the potential for facilitating the increased usage of agent technology in the creation of information systems in the widest sense. In 2005, two AOIS workshops were held internationally. The first was affiliated with the AAMAS 2005 meeting in July in Utrecht in The Netherlands and chaired by Henderson-Sellers and Winikoff and the second with ER 2005 in November in Klagenfurt in Austria and chaired by Kolp and Bresciani. The best papers from these meetings were identified and authors invited to revise and possibly extend their papers in the light of reviewers’ comments and feedback at the workshop. We have grouped these papers loosely under four headings: Agent behavior, communications and reasoning; Methodologies and ontologies; Agent-oriented software engineering; and Applications. These categories fairly represent the breadth of current AOIS research as well as encompassing the papers presented at the two AOIS workshops. We trust you will find the content of these selected and revised papers to be of interest and utility.

Influences of the induced magnetic field on the generator performance of an experimental liquid metal MHD power generator are numerically investigated by means of 2-D and 3-D numerical simulations. Numerical results of 2-D simulations show that as the inlet velocity of liquid metal increases, the generator performance decreases. This is because the induced magnetic field increases with the inlet velocity of liquid metal, so that the total magnetic field decreases. Furthermore, numerical results of 3-D simulations indicate that the Induced magnetic field can be almost negated by using a liquid metal MHD generator with double channels. As a result, the MHD generator can obtain almost constant efficiency at any inlet velocity of liquid metal.

Fetal heart rate extraction from the abdominal ECG is of great importance due to the information that carries in assessing appropriately the fetus well-being during pregnancy. In this work a novel automated method is presented for the detection of the QRS complexes of the fetus cardiac activity using multi-channel maternal ECG recordings. No accessory preprocessing step for noise filtering is required. The method is based on the complex continuous wavelet transform and modulus maxima theory. The proposed method was validated using real signals, recorded at different weeks of gestation, covering most of the pregnancy period. The system performs well, since almost all fetal beats are detected (accuracy: 99.5%). © 2004 IEEE.

Single photon lidars (in solid state form) offer several benefits over pulsed lidars, such as independence of micro-mechanical moving parts or rotating joints, lower power consumption, faster acquisition rate, and reduced size. When mass produced, they will be cheaper and smaller and thus very attractive for mobile laser scanning applications. However, as these lidars operate by receiving single photons, they are very susceptible to background illumination such as sunlight. In other words, the observations contain a significant amount of noise, or to be specific, outliers. This causes trouble for measurements done in motion, as the sampling rate (i.e. the measurement frequency) should be low and high at the same time. It should be low enough so that target detection is robust, meaning that the targets can be distinguished from the single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) triggings caused by the background photons. On the other hand, the sampling rate should be high enough to allow for measurements to be done from motion. Quick sampling reduces the probability that a sample gathered during motion would contain data from more than a single target at a specific range. Here, we study the exploitation of spatial correlations that exist between the observations as a mean to overcome this sampling rate paradox. We propose computational methods for short and long range. Our results indicate that the spatial correlations do indeed allow for faster and more robust sampling of measurements, which makes single photon lidars more attractive in (daylight) mobile laser scanning. © 2019 Authors.

The present work is an attempt to show an way of applying the univariate marginal distribution algorithm to nonstationary environments. The main idea used for this purpose is to introduce mutation (to increase diversity) as and when the environment or the optimization function changes. Simulation study is done on different time dependent versions of a function having simple but difficult landscape. Empirical studies reveal that for smaller shift in position of the optimum, the algorithm can trace this change almost instantaneously. But if the position of the optimum changes by a larger amount, the present algorithm cannot trace it. We also discuss the issue of performance measure for non-stationary environment, and propose a new measure called tractability in this respect. © 2004 - IOS Press and the authors.

The Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm predicts that the evolution of cellular and wireless networks will bring a considerable increase of two factors, the densification of the Radio Access Network (RAN) part and the progressive demand for traffic. This rapid evolution has led to the emergence of extremely complicated systems, where a large number of logic modules must interact to lead to the desired behavior and the desired quality of service. The key advantage of SDNs is the simplicity of networking and the deployment of new mechanisms and applications. Furthermore, the programmable aspect on the traffic and devices in SDNs makes them more efficient and flexible than traditional networks. In this context, Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) has been recently presented as a new trend to solve the issues of the today's mobility management protocols. In this paper, we propose a partially distributed Mobility Management for OpenFlow/SDN networks. According to simulation results, our approach guarantees a significant reduction of the number of handover and the signaling cost. This paper studies the problem of asymptotic stability for discrete-time switched T-S fuzzy systems with multiple delays. A novel algebraic criterion is proposed for the delay-independent asymptotic stability of the system, based on semipositivity and M-matrix properties. The major benefit of this technique is that it avoids the problem of computations complexity over LMIs constraints. Two numerical examples are presented to evince the efficiency of the proposed technique.

Carotid Artery Disease is a complex multi-disciplinary medical condition causing strokes and several other disfunctions to individuals. Within this work, a cloud - based platform is proposed for clinicians and medical doctors that provides a comprehensive risk assessment tool for carotid artery disease. It includes three modeling levels: baseline data-driven risk assessment, blood flow simulations and plaque progression modeling. The proposed models, which have been validated through a wide set of studies within the TAXINOMISIS project, are delivered to the end users through an easy-to-use cloud platform. The architecture and the deployment of this platform includes interfaces for handling the electronic patient record, the 3D arterial reconstruction, blood flow simulations and risk assessment reporting. TAXINOMISIS, compared with both similar software approaches and with the current clinical workflow, assists clinicians to treat patients more effectively and more accurately by providing innovative and validated *** Relevance - Asymptomatic carotid artery disease is a prevalent condition that affects a significant portion of the population, leading to an increased risk of stroke and other cardiovascular events. Early detection and appropriate treatment of this condition can significantly reduce the risk of adverse outcomes and improve patient outcomes. The development of a software tool to assist clinicians in the assessment and management of asymptomatic patients with carotid artery disease is therefore of great clinical relevance. By providing a comprehensive and reliable assessment of the disease and its risk factors, this tool will enable clinicians to make informed decisions regarding patient management and treatment. The impact of this tool on patient outcomes and the reduction of healthcare costs will be of great importance to both patients and the healthcare system.
