To inform ongoing efforts to assess war-gaming performance, we sought to identify, develop, and validate techniques for assessing the war-gaming effectiveness of U.S. Army National Guard officers in training. Through extensive literature review, consultation with subject matter experts, and observation, we have achieved a more in-depth understanding of the war-gaming process than has previously been accomplished. We have identified what individual and team competencies should be targeted to assess student war-gaming and to diagnose performance deficits in a variety of instructional settings. We have developed assessments to capture a subset of these competencies and have administered these assessments to National Guard officers enrolled in the distancelearning version of the Armor Captains' Career Course, taught through the U.S. Army Armor School. Qualitative analysis of the data collected tentatively suggests that our assessments are valid and that the competencies we measured may be those used to make intuitive, expert judgments of student performance.

Increased use of market mechanisms in the delivery of public services is one of the major attempts made by governments to achieve greater efficiency, higher quality and a clearer focus on customers. information systems (ISs) can promote the adoption of market mechanisms, but they can also preserve a monopolistic and hierarchic model of service delivery. Hence, understanding the competitive implications of information technology (IT) is becoming relevant for managers in the public sector as well. Provides a brief overview of previous research on IT-based competition and discusses its relevance for public sector management. Then continues to describe a project where six offices of one city co-operated in developing a shared geographic information system (GIS). While this research is based on an in-depth analysis of only one case, other researchers have reported similar experiences. It appears that effective use of market mechanisms in the public sector requires new orientation in IS planning and rethinking of the role of IS departments in public sector organisations. © 2003, MCB UP Limited

Cardiac modelling spans a period of nearly half a century and has faced the development of many mathematical representations of the major types of cardiac cells. These models have been used to answer patho-physiological questions at both single cell and multicellular level. In this work, we discuss the merits of dimensionality for 0D single cell models and 1D cell strands. We look at models of the origin and spread of cardiac excitation from the sinoatrial node into atrial tissue. We present results for the single cell model of sinoatrial node and the results when phase resetting is applied. The effects of phase resetting are discussed using phase resetting curves. We also present the results of application of a critical stimulus on the membrane potential of sinoatrial node (SAN) that permanent annihilates the propagation of the excitation. Simulation of the spread of normal and disturbed cardiac excitation requires the use of multicellular models. 1D architectures suffer from limitations in neighbouring tissue effects on individual cells, but they can be applied to the simulation of normal spread of excitation or, in ring-like structures and re-entry simulation. In 1D model each cell is connected to each other into a strand of cells from sinoatrial node to atria. We present the results of simulating 1D model from sinoatrial node to the atrium. With respect to the study of the heart, 1D model can be used to address important aspects of the origin and spread of cardiac excitation. Models of higher dimensionality can incorporate more structural and functional details, and range from homogeneous tissue blocks to highly detailed anatomical representations. © 2006 World Scientific Publishing Co. With the emergence of Big Data, the exploitation of information has become such a direct and rapid action that many questions arise about the reliability and value of data. However, the data raised by online search engines is based on a varied and massive environment, which includes varied data and from different sources of information. Indeed, in the field of distance education (e-Learning) and in particular during online research, the learner is faced with a massive mixture of data which does not exist in an ordered format and which is not easy to operate. This variety of data represents the second V in Big Data. In order to support learners in their search for information, it is proposed to design a specialized tool to combine these massive and varied data so that they can provide the appropriate result to the learner. This article deals with the descriptive study of the current state of the use of online research in the Big Data environment by the students of the UAE (Abdelmalek Essaadi University), and to highlight the advantages and impacts of this phenomenon on learning and scientific research.

In this article, the authors propose to consider a multicomponent approach to evaluating the efficiency of roller mills in an enrichment plant, based on the use of a set of pre-built various mathematical models. The multicomponent approach makes it possible to predict the volume of finished concentrate output reliably during the period of the factory's transition to the use of ore with changed characteristics. Automation of forecasting will make it possible to analyze the effect of the physical and chemical characteristics of the feedstock adequately on the productivity of the main mills of the processing plant and plan the volumes of the concentrate. During the study, a database was created, the array size of which was 432x28: 432 is the number of daily data, and 28 is the total number of factors. Clustering methods were implemented by the software of the MATLAB R2021a application package, which made it possible to divide the generated database into clusters. As a result, the homogeneity of the data array connected by the same type of links was proved and, accordingly, the confirmation of the validity of combining the arrays of sections No. 1, 2 and 3 in order to form a single database for further processing and building a predictive model. Using the parallel use of the Statistica and Matlab packages, an optimal regression model was obtained. Artificial neural networks were formed with a different number of hidden layers. © 2023 IEEE.

Safe and effective evacuation is very essential to decrease casualties in an emergency event. The social force model is used to simulate the movement of evacuee and leader crowd evacuation with leader in an experimental area. The a-star algorithm is used to find the evacuation routes of each evacuee from the initial location to the exit. In this paper, we proposed the application of reinforcement learning to train the agent to become an evacuation leader via the unity ML-Agents Toolkit. This model is tested in three scenarios: an evacuation without a leader, an evacuation with a leader, and an evacuation with randomly located agent. They are considered for comparison purposes to show the impact of an agent that tries to tell an exit to all evacuees in the experimental area. The experimental results show that the proposed crowd evacuation agent could effectively evacuate all evacuees in the experimental area. © 2022 ACM.

The application of clustering techniques to glucose time series data has the potential to enhance early detection and effective management of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. This, in turn, can contribute to improved clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcomes. In this study, we aim to address the issue of personalized clustering of glucose time series data, specifically those recorded during the nocturnal sleep period, via Self Organized Maps. The clustering model was constructed using a dataset comprising 22 patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes who were closely monitored for a maximum duration of 4 weeks as part of the GlucoseML study. Based on the silhouette coefficient score, two distinct clusters have been identified, indicating the presence of two separate glucose distributions observed during nocturnal sleep. Within Cluster 1, it has been observed that 90% of glucose values fall within the desired euglycemic range of 70-180 mg/dL. Consequently, there is a corresponding increase in the likelihood of hypoglycemia, with a rate of 2.4% occurring below the threshold of 70 mg/dL. Within Cluster 2, patients show a mainly hyperglycemic profile, characterized by 64.4% of values exceeding 180 mg/dL, while no instances of hypoglycemia were observed. © 2023 IEEE.

Galaxy clusters contain vast amounts of hot ionized gas known as the intracluster medium (ICM). In relaxed cluster cores, the radiative cooling time of the ICM is shorter than the age of the cluster. However, the absence of line emission associated with cooling suggests heating mechanisms that offset the cooling, with feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) being the most likely source^1,2. Turbulence and bulk motions, such as the oscillating (‘sloshing’) motion of the core gas in the cluster potential well, have also been proposed as mechanisms for heat distribution from the outside of the core^3,4. Here we present X-ray spectroscopic observations of the Centaurus galaxy cluster with the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission satellite. We find that the hot gas flows along the line of sight relative to the central galaxy, with velocities from 130 km s⁻¹ to 310 km s⁻¹ within about 30 kpc of the centre. This indicates bulk flow consistent with core gas sloshing. Although the bulk flow may prevent excessive accumulation of cooled gas at the centre, it could distribute the heat injected by the AGN and bring in thermal energy from the surrounding ICM. The velocity dispersion of the gas is found to be only ≲120 km s⁻¹ in the core, even within about 10 kpc of the AGN. This suggests that the influence of the AGN on the surrounding ICM motion is limited in the cluster. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2025.

The Virtual Airspace Simulation technology Real-Time (VAST-RT) project at NASA Ames research Center has implemented a new airspace modeling and simulation capability that provides a gate-to-gate, real-time, human-in-the-loop simulation environment to evaluate revolutionary Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts. The system architecture of the VAST-RT connects high-fidelity flight simulators and air traffic control (ATC) simulators with each other and with low to medium fidelity target generators, as well as provides an interface for various models, agents, and decision support tools to create a flexible, extensible, and reconfigurable environment. The VAST-RT system architecture is responsible for delivering simulation data, including audio and video streams, in real-time to each of the participating simulation systems or facilities, as well as providing simulation synchronization and timing information. The architecture is based primarily upon the DoD developed High Level Architecture (HLA), however, the VAST-RT project has developed a standard interface method to reduce the time and cost of integrating existing simulation systems into the distributed simulation environment. In addition, VAST-RT has adopted the concept of bridging between HLA federations to overcome incompatibilities between different HLA runtime implementations as well as differences in modeling of simulation data. The design and implementation of bridges between HLA federations, portals from non-HLA data networks to HLA federations, and real-time communications toolboxes that provide "best-practices" software interfaces for VAST-RT will be discussed. The development of solutions for distributed audio and video communications across the simulation environment will also be described. Wireless networks allow the deployment of sensing systems and actuation mechanisms at a much finer level of granularity than has been possible before. This paper is focused on connecting sensor data with actuators through a decision-making layer with learning capability. The decision making process regarding the provision of agricultural resources is extended this by on-line monitoring significant plant and environmental parameters and by applying machine-learning algorithms for inducing rules by analysing logged datasets to determine the significant thresholds of plant-based parameters.
