An exploratory study of eating patterns of Singapore children and teenagers

Presents a first attempt to investigate eating patterns in children in Singapore in terms of frequency, sources and types of food, with specific emphasis on eating outside the home. Two sets of data were collected. A guided questionnaire was administered to adults accompanying the pre-school age children and young people at various eating outlets, hawker centres, food courts and fast food outlets. All 198 transcripts were usable. Overall, 19 per cent of those interviewed ate out five to seven times a week. The two most common reasons given for this were “convenience” (65, 33 per cent), and “nobody prepares home-cooked meals” (62, 31 per cent). “Convenience” was most common among pre-school (29, 48 per cent) and teenaged (27, 42 per cent) children, whereas “nobody cooks at home” (31, 43 per cent) was most common in school-age children. Few boys said that they ate fruit or vegetables. This picture is in keeping with the pattern among Singaporean adults and may contribute to the high rate of obesity that increases risk of adult diseases. Research is needed to confirm these findings and to investigate the social influences on eating patterns with a view to designing effective nutrition/health education that can effect behavioural change. © 2002, MCB UP Limited

Currently, there are many numbers of patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) which is the most common joint pain of osteoarthritis (OA). Joint stiffness and pain in the knee are the KOA symptoms depending on many causes. There are 13% of women, 10% of 60 years and older than 70 years men, the prevalence rises to 40%. Males are prevalent lower than in females [9]. This makes the number of doctors and medical assistance who specialize in monitoring the treatment inadequate for patients' proportion. In addition, problems in patients' accommodation are the long-distance travel, rural area, insecure route issue, e.g., in southern of Thailand, transportation, and requesting a helper or caregivers accompany to see a doctor every period. Therefore, this research approaches Internet of Things (IoT) technology with physical stabilization knee support as electronic medical records (EMR) on a website monitoring the KOA patients' treatment results. The direct benefit is to increase the accuracy of the remote measurement, to analysis of symptoms and to facilitate the follow-up of medical treatment and improve the quality of rural patients' life. © 2020 IEEE.

Thai character recognition using "snakecut" technique

Optical character recognition has become one of the powerful tools in the area of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. Our research targets practically to Thai character recognition on Thai national identification cards. We propose a Thai character recognition technique, so called "Snakecut". It is invented by iterative investigations of the Thai characters. The "Snakecut", an unsupervised technique, is able to trace around each character, meticulously. A set of 26 weighted parameters are employed to further tuning recognition performances. Experiment results accuracy rates are 83.10% for pure Thai characters and 92.96% for a mixture of numbers and Thai characters with some limitations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

In this paper, a multiple signals embedding technique is applied in HSV and YIQ color spaces. Also, a new algorithm is proposed to detect and eliminate the cropping areas within the attacked image to achieve the higher performance in extraction process. The experimental sets are designed to support the proposed concepts. The obtained results show significant improvement in terms of NC. In addition, the improvements in terms of robustness by the proposed method work effectively against various common image-processing-based attacks especially against cropping attacks. The results are strongly shown and supported our proposed algorithm that achieves higher accuracy of signal extraction compared to the previously proposed algorithm.

One of the challenges in RFID adoption is to deal with massive RFID data. The large amount of data continuously generated from RFID devices come with noise and redundant, and the data may be missing. This study proposes the enhancement of a high level RFID data management using the data from EPCIS and e-Transaction as pre-processing data sources. The results reveal that the enhanced features improve the performance of the system by eliminating noise and redundant, therefore, the operation time is significantly reduced. The missing data can be detected at the end of the operation. © Springer Science+Business Media Singapore 2014.

Obstacle detection and warning application is to implement for assisting visually impaired people to reduce a harm causing injury. In detail, we study, plan, analyze, design, and develop the obstacle detection module for preventing the visually impaired people crashing the obstructions and send them the alert message for preventing an accidence. Improving the quality of life making them safe and live without anxiety. Regarding methodology, we select an object detection system using on real-time camera or VDO processing named “You Only Look Once” or YOLO. There are two versions; YOLOv2 and YOLO9000, which have tested in this development. YOLOv2 is higher performance than YOLO9000 in 20:7 frames per second (FPS), and higher accuracy. After that, we integrate the detection and notification modules together. Finally, this system can detect and send the alert message to the visually impaired people immediately before they crash the obstructions.

Open source software (OSS) has affected organizations and communities in many ways since it was introduced. OSS makes a significant impact on software development strategies and adoption in many organizations. OSS was used in software development in order to reduce cost, provide shorter time-to-market, and increase productivity. However, the documents needed in software engineering process for OSS development are often missing. Without these documents, software developers may have to take more time to modify available source code and it may increase the risk of misunderstandings. Therefore, the research reported here proposes a packaging support system for OSS in order to reduce these problems. The preliminary evaluation of system performance was conducted in our laboratory by the selected subjects acting as two groups of users: members and administrators. The results of system evaluation in term of users' satisfaction, using Likert scale, were rated as good quality (averaged 4.2) and very good quality (averaged 4.86) by members and administrators respectively.

Mobile devices, such as smartphone or tablet, have become an important part of human life. The mobile positioning capability, the service that identify the location of mobile device, has become a captivate feature used in various applications such as check-in function in the social network. Likewise, for the police duty, the record of the crime location is important to reveal the distribution area of crime, which can be used to analyze and plan for the future crime prevention. Therefore, this study proposes the web-based criminal record system aims to improve the traditional system of Hat Yai police station. The proposed application facilitates the police to record the location of crime using location-based services embedded in the mobile device. Moreover, police can capture the files such as images using camera or sound using sound recording. The crime record can be submitted to the data center through the secure network connection using HTTPS. The prototype was developed using HTML5 based on hybrid-platform development concept which compatible with the well-known mobile operating systems. The data stored in the data center can be used to generate the various types of reports such as crime mapping. For the future works, the data will be used to analyze using data mining techniques such as crime mapping analysis or time series analysis, which is useful for the police in the future crime prevention.

Due to rapid growth in agriculture yield and enhanced demand in the last three decades of Indian cultivation and agriculture, farmers are facing emerging issues of new pests and infectious microbes. Addressing the high amount of loss due to pathogens requires early detection and control of disease as one of the utmost priorities. The problem can be addressed by introducing representation learning without compromising the accuracy. In order to classify the diseases, we need high quality of generalized features to be extracted from image data. Combination of handcrafted features with representation learning features (extracted using the pre-trained model feature) is experimented in this work for classification purpose which has resulted in an accuracy of above 90% if fine-tuned with necessary parameters. This method is comparable to classical techniques and has reported significant improvement over state-of-the-art. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper proposes a game application prototype of an architectural, algorithms, graphical user interface (GUI) design, implementation, and evaluation for guessing English vocabularies for mobile devices, both smartphones and tablets on multiple platforms supported. The application aims to conduct participation amongst the people who use smartphones and tablets to practice English, especially for children. The guessing words application requires at least two players for each gameplay role acting as hinter and guesser. A competition mode of multiple team gameplay is archived by the Bluetooth connection. The application provides mechanisms for both logical and physical game rules using a devices accelerometer. The players can select playing modes which consisting of four modes such as words and pictures in English vocabularies. The players can also create their own customized games including given vocabulary lists from a teacher. Furthermore, the application prototype has been implemented, built, and technical tested. Full implementation of the game is freely distributed on an on-line place already.
