This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Structural and Syntactic Pattern Recognition and the 3rd International Workshop on Statistical Techniques in Pattern Recognition, SSPR 2000 and SPR 2000, held in Alicante, Spain in August/September 2000. The 52 revised full papers presented together with five invited papers and 35 posters were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 130 submissions. The book offers topical sections on hybrid and combined methods, document image analysis, grammar and language methods, structural matching, graph-based methods, shape analysis, clustering and density estimation, object recognition, general methodology, and feature extraction and selection.

While automation systems can track thousands of measurements it is still up to human process operators to determine the operational situation of the controlled process, particularly in abnormal situations. To fully exploit the computing power of embedded processors and to release humans from simple data harvesting activities, the concept of proactive computing tries to exploit the strengths of both man and machine. Proactive features can be implemented using intelligent agent technology, enabling humans to move from simple interaction with computers into supervisory tasks. Autonomous information agents can handle massive amounts of heterogeneous data. They perform tedious tasks of information retrieving, combining and monitoring on the behalf of their users. This paper presents a multi-agent-based architecture for process automation, which aims to support process operators in their monitoring activities. The approach is tested with a scenario inspired by a real-world industrial challenge.

The challenges of road network segmentation demand an algorithm capable of adapting to the sparse and irregular shapes, as well as the diverse context, which often leads traditional encoding-decoding methods and simple Transformer embeddings to failure. We introduce a computationally efficient and powerful framework for elegant road-aware segmentation. Our method, called DUSA-UNet, effectively encodes fine-grained local road connectivity and holistic global topological semantics while decoding multiscale road network information. DUSA-UNet offers a novel alternative to the U-Net architecture by integrating connectivity attention, which can exploit intra-road interactions across multi-level sampling features with reduced computational complexity. This local interaction serves as valuable prior information for learning global interactions between road networks and the background through another integrality attention mechanism. The two forms of sparse attention are arranged alternatively and complementarily, and trained jointly, resulting in performance improvements without significant increases in computational complexity. Extensive experiments on various datasets with different resolutions, including Massachusetts, DeepGlobe, SpaceNet, and Large-Scale remote sensing images, demonstrate that DUSA-UNet outperforms state-of-the-art techniques. Our approach represents a significant advancement in the field of road network extraction, providing a computationally feasible solution that achieves high-quality segmentation results. © 1980-2012 IEEE.

The property of constancy of color intensity increment for the whole triangle is proved, which allows to significantly reduce the amount of calculations when implementing shading, since the increment of color intensity is determined for the whole triangle and not for each rasterization line. This allows to perform these calculations in the preparation cycle and exclude 'long' operations directly from the shading cycle. Based on the proven property, a number of parallelization methods are proposed, which have a simple hardware implementation. Structural diagrams of devices for shading tasks are given. Methods for reducing the complexity of vector normalization are proposed. © 2022 IEEE.

Many recent contributions in the field of embedded, networked control and collaborative manufacturing, such as dynamic reconfiguration, are based on the IEC 61499 standard, which defines a general-purpose architecture for control applications. The industrial acceptance of the standard remains unclear at this time, largely because there is no obvious way to apply domain-specific, industrially accepted engineering methodologies and concepts in the context of IEC 61499. This paper proposes a way to support the established practices of the batch process domain with IEC 61499, and assesses the feasibility of the approach with an experiment involving professional designers.

This paper discusses globally distributed telematics applications in the environmental monitoring and industrial automation application areas. The requirements on the necessary distributed computing infrastructure are described. Based on these requirements, the usefulness of component-based software architectures and open service architectures is discussed, and the applicability of the Open ServicesGateway initiative (OSGi) in these applications is evaluated.

Noisy partial label learning (noisy PLL) is an important branch of weakly supervised learning. Unlike PLL where the ground-truth label must conceal in the candidate label set, noisy PLL relaxes this constraint and allows the ground-truth label may not be in the candidate label set. To address this challenging problem, most of the existing works attempt to detect noisy samples and estimate the ground-truth label for each noisy sample. However, detection errors are unavoidable. These errors can accumulate during training and continuously affect model optimization. To this end, we propose a novel framework for noisy PLL with theoretical interpretations, called "Adjusting Label Importance Mechanism (ALIM)". It aims to reduce the negative impact of detection errors by trading off the initial candidate set and model outputs. ALIM is a plug-in strategy that can be integrated with existing PLL approaches. Experimental results on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on noisy PLL. This paper presents a new release of A Robust Exact Differentiator Toolbox for Matlab®/Simulink® proposed in [1]. This release features a new discrete-time realization of the continuous-time robust exact differentiator. The implemented discretization scheme is less sensitive to gain overestimation and does not suffer from the discretization chattering effect. Hence, the single tuning parameter of the new version of the implemented differentiator is more intuitive to tune. Furthermore, it shows superior estimation performance in the case of large sampling times in comparison to the previous release. This is confirmed by the presented results obtained by numerical simulations and a real world application. © 2018 IEEE.

In real-life, many practical applications involve agents that are nonlinear and nonholonomic. This paper investigates output synchronization of multiple mobile agents in a plane. The output synchronization of mobile agent's aims are two aspects: making the speed of each agent synchronized and tracking desired trajectories in a group. First, each agent dynamics is described by an affine control system and the communication topology among the agents is represented by a digraph. Using adjacent information and incidence matrix, a decentralized control law is acquired, which is composed of alignment control and cohesion control. Second, the stability of the group is proved by the decentralized control law and the synchronization control objective is realized. Finally, ten mobile agents are simulated to show the effectiveness of the present control law. ©2010 IEEE.

Microstructural information acquired from image analysis can be used in cell modeling. In order to obtain more precise Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) microstructure parameters, an adaptive fuzzy approach is developed for three-phase identification of YSZ/Ni anode Optical Microscopic (OM) images. A new quantum-inspired clique potential Markov random field (MRF) function is proposed to considerate spatial information in fuzzy logic model, where the space distance based weight is introduced to reflect the influence of neighborhood pixels. Simulated images and real SOFC anode OM images are used to compare the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed algorithm with others. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed methods can accurately separate there-phase of SOFC OM images, which lays the foundation of subsequent microstructural parameters extracting. © 2017 ACM.
