A novel specular surface reconstruction approach developed for and used in an experimental multi-camera corneal topographer arrangement is presented in the paper. The tear-film coated, and therefore specular, corneal surface is mathematically reconstructed from the corneal images taken simultaneously by the calibrated cameras of the arrangement. The surface reconstruction is achieved by the joint solution of partial differential equations (PDE's) that is derived from the mapping between the measurement-pattern and its virtual images taken by the cameras. The PDE's - each given in an advantageous form for one of the cameras - describe the phenomenon of light-reflection at the corneal surface. The portions of the corneal surface that reflect - possibly different - measurement-pattern points to more than one camera convey starting points for the mathematical reconstruction of the surface.

It has been demonstrated by Serre et al. that the biologically inspired model (BIM) is effective for object recognition. It outperforms many state-of-the-art methods in challenging databases. However, BIM has the following three problems: a very heavy computational cost due to dense input, a disputable pooling operation in modeling relations of the visual cortex, and blind feature selection in a feedforward framework. To solve these problems, we develop an enhanced BIM (EBIM), which removes uninformative input by imposing sparsity constraints, utilizes a novel local weighted pooling operation with stronger physiological motivations, and applies a feedback procedure that selects effective features for combination. Empirical studies on the CalTech5 database and CalTech101 database show that EBIM is more effective and efficient than BIM. We also apply EBIM to the MIT-CBCL street scene database to show it achieves comparable performance in comparison with the current best performance. Moreover, the new system can process images with resolution 128 × 128 at a rate of 50 frames per second and enhances the speed 20 times at least in comparison with BIM in common applications.

In this paper, we propose the basic framework of point- wise topological logic on completely distributive lattices and explore approximate reasoning in it. The logic of this paper is based on pointwise characterization, therefore the pointwise conception is pervasive. We explore approximate reasoning in abstract logical framework Fl on completely distributive lattice L. We propose the structure of point- wise topological logic F TL , the structure of matching function sigma. and the structure of matching neighborhood group. We investigate approximate reasoning in pointwise topological logic F TL with matching function sigma, develop pointwise topological algorithm of simple approximate reasoning, introduce the essential characteristics of this scheme.

Projects are living entities. They are born with the project idea and end with the project termination. The time in between can last for many years, in most of the cases, requiring continuous implementation and management effort. Over the time project changes on requirements change the implementation process and in turn the management process, the maintenance process and so on. In order to maintain qualitative and quantitative project results both the project implementation and management processes need to be adjusted in the overall project changes and environment. This adjustment can be made by using agile project management methodologies, defining processes based on the identification of the project goals, constraints and expatiations. Unfortunately that is not enough, and projects, especially software projects are still in implementation and management crisis. This paper presents the concept of process mutation on project management methodological frameworks as a supplementary method to the agile models and agility the concept.

In this paper is presented algorithmic realization of system for short-term weather forecasting, which makes acquisition, processing and visualization of information, related to the parameters temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction. The proposed algorithm is defined from the juxtaposition of the collected statistical data with the currently measured data, on the chosen methods for weather forecasting and the determined correlation between the processed meteorological quantities. The choice of the methods for weather prediction is made according the needed input data and the resources for their realization. © 2007 ACM.

This paper proposes a general Kernel-Bayesian framework for object tracking. In this framework, the kernel based method-mean shift algorithm is embedded into the Bayesian framework seamlessly to provide a heuristic prior information to the state transition model, aiming at effectively alleviating the heavy computational load and avoiding sample degeneracy suffered by the conventional Bayesian trackers. Moreover, the tracked object is characterized by a spatial-constraint MOG (Mixture of Gaussians) based appearance model, which is shown more discriminative than the traditional MOG based appearance model. Meantime, a novel selective updating technique for the appearance model is developed to accommodate the changes in both appearance and illumination. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared with Bayesian and kernel based tracking frameworks, the proposed algorithm is more efficient and effective. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

This paper presents an approach towards learning enhanced motion control of DC motor, suitable for applications involving repeated iterations of motion trajectories. The overall structure of the control consists of a feedback and a feed-forward components. The model-free learning adaptive feedback control (MFLAC) provides for the main system stabilization and an iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm is proposed to serve as a feedforward compensation to nonlinear and unknown dynamics and disturbances, thereby enhancing the improvement achievable with PID or MFLAC alone. It serves as the basis for simulation study of the proposed control scheme. A comparison of the performance achieved with traditional PID and MFLAC is also provided to highlight the advantages of the additional intelligent feedforward mode.

A far-range camera calibration method for vision sensors used in automatic lane detection systems is investigated Autonomous vehicle guidance based on stereo image acquisition requires the knowledge of the camera parameters, such as camera position, orientation, lens distortion, focal length etc. with high precision Calibration is performed by placing markers in known positions in front of the vehicle holding the camera(s) and by detecting the location of their images in the acquired snapshots. The parameters are then estimated by minimizing the geometric error in the image. Most of the methods discovered in the literature do not consider errors in the measurement of marker locations. However, a precise marker arrangement for far-range calibration might be expensive to set up. This paper shows that imprecision in the 3D location of the markers can not be tolerated in some practical situations and in such cases, a different optimization is proposed in the calibration of the extrinsic camera parameters (camera position and orientation). A position estimation method is also shown to extract marker positions from far-range laser distance meter measurements. The estimated marker positions are corrected by considering aiming errors, as well. Parameter errors are also estimated. It will be shown that our new calibration and optimization method is expected to result a good accuracy compared to commercial methods. © 2007 IEEE.

The function block (FB) construct has been adopted by recent IEC standards for the design of reusable, interoperable, distributed control applications. In this paper, an approach to exploit the benefits of this paradigm in batch process control is presented. A hybrid approach that integrates the FB model with the Unified Modeling Language is exploited and customized to the batch domain taking as starting point the industrially accepted SP88 standard. A toolset was customized to support the presented approach and demonstrate the applicability of the IEC61499 function block model in batch processing. Research experience with industrial engineers in the context of IEC 61499 and SP88 is used to motivate a development methodology that is sufficiently straightforward and efficient. The Java-based IEC61499-compliant run-time environment used for the execution of the control application is briefly described.
