DBMS are a ubiquitous building block of the software stack in many complex applications. Middleware technologies, application servers and mapping approaches hide the core database technologies just like power, networking infrastructure and operating system services. Furthermore, many enterprise-critical applications demand a certain degree of quality of service (QoS) or guarantees, e.g. wrt. response time, transaction throughput, latency but also completeness or more generally quality of results. Examples of such applications are billing systems in telecommunication , where each telephone call has to be monitored and registered in a database, Ecommerce applications where orders have to be accepted even in times of heavy load and the waiting time of customers should not exceed a few seconds, ERP systems processing a large number of transactions in parallel, or systems for processing streaming or sensor data in realtime, e.g. in process automation of traffic control. As part of complex multilevel software stack, database systems have to share or contribute to these QoS requirements, which means that guarantees have to be given by the DBMS, too, and that the processing of database requests is predictable. Todays mainstream DBMS typically follow a best effort approach: requests are processed as fast as possible without any guarantees: the optimization goal of query optimizers and tuning approaches is rather to minimize resource consumption instead of just fulfilling given service level agreements. However, motivated by the situation described above there is an emerging need for database services providing guarantees or simply behave in a predictable manner and at the same time interact with other components of the software stack in order to fulfill the requirements. This is also driven by the paradigm of service-oriented architectures widely discussed in industry. Currently, this is addressed only by very specialized solutions. Visual tracking usually involves an optimization process for estimating the motion of an object from measured images in a video sequence. In this paper, a new evolutionary approach, PSO (particle swarm optimization), is adopted for visual tracking. Since the tracking process is a dynamic optimization problem which is simultaneously influenced by the object state and the time, we propose a sequential particle swarm optimization framework by incorporating the temporal continuity information into the traditional PSO algorithm. In addition, the parameters in PSO are changed adaptively according to the fitness values of particles and the predicted motion of the tracked object, leading to a favourable performance in tracking applications. Furthermore, we show theoretically that, in a Bayesian inference view, the sequential PSO framework is in essence a multi-layer importance sampling based particle filter. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared with the state-of-the-art particle filter and its variation-the unscented particle filter, the proposed tracking algorithm is more robust and effective, especially when the object has an arbitrary motion or undergoes large appearance changes.

Projects are living entities. They are born with the project idea and end with the project termination. The time in between can last for many years, in most of the cases, requiring continuous implementation and management effort. Over the time project changes on requirements change the implementation process and in turn the management process, the maintenance process and so on. In order to maintain qualitative and quantitative project results both the project implementation and management processes need to be adjusted in the overall project changes and environment. This adjustment can be made by using agile project management methodologies, defining processes based on the identification of the project goals, constraints and expatiations. Unfortunately that is not enough, and projects, especially software projects are still in implementation and management crisis. This paper presents the concept of process mutation on project management methodological frameworks as a supplementary method to the agile models and agility the concept.

The trajectory tracking control of a 6-degree-of- freedom (DOF) rigid robot arm is described in this paper. The trajectories for the joint variables are generated in third-order spline form using general constrained nonlinear optimization, taking into consideration the joint position, velocity, acceleration, jerk and overall current consumption constraints during the movement. The trajectory tracking of the individual joints is solved using a discrete-time linear controller design. The obtained trajectories are previously checked to avoid collisions using oriented bounding boxes and their separating axis theorem tests. The complete inverse kinematics of the arm is symbolically calculated in the Mathematica computing environment and implemented in C++. Simulations and measurements show the applicability of the proposed method.

A novel specular surface reconstruction approach developed for and used in an experimental multi-camera corneal topographer arrangement is presented in the paper. The tear-film coated, and therefore specular, corneal surface is mathematically reconstructed from the corneal images taken simultaneously by the calibrated cameras of the arrangement. The surface reconstruction is achieved by the joint solution of partial differential equations (PDE's) that is derived from the mapping between the measurement-pattern and its virtual images taken by the cameras. The PDE's - each given in an advantageous form for one of the cameras - describe the phenomenon of light-reflection at the corneal surface. The portions of the corneal surface that reflect - possibly different - measurement-pattern points to more than one camera convey starting points for the mathematical reconstruction of the surface.

It has been demonstrated by Serre et al. that the biologically inspired model (BIM) is effective for object recognition. It outperforms many state-of-the-art methods in challenging databases. However, BIM has the following three problems: a very heavy computational cost due to dense input, a disputable pooling operation in modeling relations of the visual cortex, and blind feature selection in a feedforward framework. To solve these problems, we develop an enhanced BIM (EBIM), which removes uninformative input by imposing sparsity constraints, utilizes a novel local weighted pooling operation with stronger physiological motivations, and applies a feedback procedure that selects effective features for combination. Empirical studies on the CalTech5 database and CalTech101 database show that EBIM is more effective and efficient than BIM. We also apply EBIM to the MIT-CBCL street scene database to show it achieves comparable performance in comparison with the current best performance. Moreover, the new system can process images with resolution 128 × 128 at a rate of 50 frames per second and enhances the speed 20 times at least in comparison with BIM in common applications.

In this paper, we propose the basic framework of point- wise topological logic on completely distributive lattices and explore approximate reasoning in it. The logic of this paper is based on pointwise characterization, therefore the pointwise conception is pervasive. We explore approximate reasoning in abstract logical framework Fl on completely distributive lattice L. We propose the structure of point- wise topological logic F TL , the structure of matching function sigma. and the structure of matching neighborhood group. We investigate approximate reasoning in pointwise topological logic F TL with matching function sigma, develop pointwise topological algorithm of simple approximate reasoning, introduce the essential characteristics of this scheme.

In this paper is presented algorithmic realization of system for short-term weather forecasting, which makes acquisition, processing and visualization of information, related to the parameters temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction. The proposed algorithm is defined from the juxtaposition of the collected statistical data with the currently measured data, on the chosen methods for weather forecasting and the determined correlation between the processed meteorological quantities. The choice of the methods for weather prediction is made according the needed input data and the resources for their realization. © 2007 ACM.

This paper proposes a general Kernel-Bayesian framework for object tracking. In this framework, the kernel based method-mean shift algorithm is embedded into the Bayesian framework seamlessly to provide a heuristic prior information to the state transition model, aiming at effectively alleviating the heavy computational load and avoiding sample degeneracy suffered by the conventional Bayesian trackers. Moreover, the tracked object is characterized by a spatial-constraint MOG (Mixture of Gaussians) based appearance model, which is shown more discriminative than the traditional MOG based appearance model. Meantime, a novel selective updating technique for the appearance model is developed to accommodate the changes in both appearance and illumination. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared with Bayesian and kernel based tracking frameworks, the proposed algorithm is more efficient and effective. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
