This paper describes the use of voltage source converter based HVDC transmission (VSC transmission) system for grid integration of large wind farms over long distance. The wind farms can be based on either doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) or fixed speed induction generator (FSIG). The paper describes the operation principles and control strategies of the proposed system. Automatic power balancing during network AC fault is achieved without communication between the two converters. PSCAD/EMTDC simulations are presented to demonstrate the robust performance and to validate the proposed system during various operating conditions such as variations of generation and AC fault conditions. The proposed VSC transmission system has technical and economic advantages over a conventional AC connection for integrating large wind farms over long distance

A cellular neural/nonlinear network (CNN) is any spatial arrangement of mainly locally coupled cells, where each cell is a dynamical system which has an input, an output and a state that evolves according to some prescribed dynamical laws. Since the CNN was first introduced in 1988, research in this field has developed rapidly. The goal of this tutorial is to provide participants with a snapshot of the current state of the art and research trends. It covers the broad multi-disciplinary areas of CNN research, from theoretical aspects to applications. For many years discrete-event simulation has been used to analyze production and logistics problems in manufacturing and defense. In the early 1980s, visual interactive modelling environments were created that supported the development, experimentation and visualization of simulation models. Today these environments are termed commercial-off-the-shelf simulation packages (CSPs). With the advent of distributed simulation and, later, the high level architecture, the possibility existed to link together these CSPs and their models to simulate larger problems within enterprises (e.g. multiple production lines) and across supply chains. However, the problem of standardizing the use of the HLA and its constituent parts in this domain exists. The solution of this problem is the work of the CSP interoperability product development group (CSPI PDG). The purpose of this paper is to introduce the CSPI PDG and to review the suite of standards proposed by the group and current progress

Rough sets, a tool for data mining, deal with the vagueness and granularity in information systems. This paper studies a type of covering generalized rough sets. After presenting their basic properties, this paper explores the inter dependency between the lower and the upper approximation operations, conditions under which two coverings generate a same upper approximation operation, and the axiomatic systems for these operations. In the end, this paper establishes the relationships between this type of covering rough sets and the other covering rough sets in literature

In this paper the authors propose a structural method for a genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization problem of cable routing in which cables have to be laid optimally. When there are no limits on the layout routes, the optimal routes for the individual cables can be found using the Dijkstra method in a finite discrete graph. However, when there are limits on the capacity in the layout routes, optimization cannot be performed using the Dijkstra method. The proposed GA is a two-level hierarchical GA that uses chromosome coding involving two levels. The routes for each cable and the combinations of cable routes are defined respectively, and layout route selection is optimized overall through genetic operations involving these levels. Block crossover and block mutation are used as genetic operations in the first level. In addition, a method to take advantage of lethal genes, which do not satisfy the constraints and are generated in the second level is used. computer simulations confirm that the two-level hierarchical GA with these genetic operations functions effectively for the optimization problem of cable routing. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Process control applications are large distributed systems containing a vast number of communication links between their fragments. These links may have unique properties with respect to communication mechanisms and real-time Quality of Service attributes. Frequent dynamic reconfiguration of the application is only possible if these links can be updated automatically. This paper explores the possibility of using commercially available standard-based real-time middleware for managing the communication links. The special requirements of process automation are described and used to derive test cases for middleware products. Some results and experiences with the Real- rime Publish-Subscribe middleware are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

An approach to intelligent process automation based on a society of BDI-agents is presented in this paper. According to this approach a higher-level multi-agent systems based automation layer supervises an ordinary process automation system. The purpose of the agent layer is to monitor the operation of the lower-level automation system and semi-autonomously reconfigure its control logic when needed. The agent layer operates as a multi-agent system consisting of BDI-agents, which cooperatively create and run reconfiguration sequences on the ordinary automation system in order to adapt its control logic to various situations. The adaptation process may take place both in reactive and deliberative fashion. In this way the approach aims to increase the flexibility and responsiveness properties of the automation system. The approach is demonstrated with a laboratory test process where process startup and fault recovery experiments have been performed. Results from the experiments are described.
