Many real world sequences such as p.o.ein secondary structures or shell logs exhibit a rich internal structures. Traditional p.o.abilistic models of sequences, however, consider sequences of flat symbols only. Logical hidden Markov models have been p.o.osed as one solution. They deal with logical sequences, i.e., sequences over an alphabet of logical atoms. This comes at the expense of a more complex model selection p.o.lem. Indeed, different abstraction levels have to be exp.o.ed. In this paper, we p.o.ose a novel method for selecting logical hidden Markov models from data called SAGEM. SAGEM combines generalized expectation maximization, which optimizes parameters, with structure search for model selection using inductive logic p.o.ramming refinement operators. We p.o.ide convergence and experimental results that show SAGEM's effectiveness.

This paper presents a global methodology to build a nonlinear regression when the number of available samples is small compared to the number of inputs. The task is divided in two parts: selection of the best inputs and construction of the app.o.imator. A first SoM is used to compute clean correlations between the inputs and the output. A second SoM is built to link the output to the selected inputs. The good performances of this methodology are illustrated on a spectrometric dataset.

Consequently, at a client's premises there are many units of p.o.ess equipment, software modules and Internet connections that have been installed by different vendors, and this uncoordinated work has created serious interoperability, maintainability and security p.o.lems. This paper p.o.oses an open standards-based service architecture for industrial telematics that sup.o.ts interoperability, software component lifecycle management and secure execution and communication of components in a multi-vendor environment. © 2004 IEEE.

A Gaussian p.o.ess model can be learned from data by identifying the covariance matrix of its sample values. The matrix usually depends on some fixed parameters called input length scales. Their estimation is equivalent to finding the corresponding diffeomorphism of the p.o.ess inputs. Spatially variable length scales are difficult to estimate in the absence of good a priori values. We suggest a fluid-based nonlinear map.o. the p.o.ess inputs and our experiments validate such a model on a synthetic p.o.lem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper discusses globally distributed telematics applications in the environmental monitoring and industrial automation application areas. The requirements on the necessary distributed computing infrastructure are described. Based on these requirements, the usefulness of component-based software architectures and open service architectures is discussed, and the applicability of the open ServicesGateway initiative (oSGi) in these applications is evaluated.

Data mining algorithms such as the Apriori method for finding frequent sets in sparse binary data can be used for efficient computation of a large number of summaries from huge data sets. The collection of frequent sets gives a collection of marginal frequencies about the underlying data set. Sometimes, we would like to use a collection of such marginal frequencies instead of the entire data set (e.g. when the original data is inaccessible for confidentiality reasons) to compute other interesting summaries. Using combinatorial arguments, we may obtain tight upper and lower bounds on the values of inferred summaries. In this paper, we consider a class of summaries wider than frequent sets, namely that of frequencies of arbitrary Boolean formulae. Given frequencies of a number of any different Boolean formulae, we consider the p.o.lem of finding tight bounds on the frequency of another arbitrary formula. We give a general formulation of the p.o.lem of bounding formula frequencies given some background information, and show how the bounds can be obtained by solving a linear p.o.ramming p.o.lem. We illustrate the accuracy of the bounds by giving empirical results on real data sets. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper discusses two techniques for imp.o.ing the recognition accuracy for online handwritten character recognition: committee classification and adaptation to the user. Combining classifiers is a common method for imp.o.ing recognition performance. Imp.o.ements are possible because the member classifiers may make different errors. Much variation exists in handwritten characters, and adaptation is one feasible way of dealing with such variation. Even though adaptation is usually performed for single classifiers, it is also possible to use adaptive committees. Some novel adaptive committee structures, namely, the dynamically expanding context (DEC), modified current best learning (MCBL), and class-confidence critic combination (CCCC), are presented and evaluated. They are shown to be able to imp.o.e on their member classifiers, with CCCC offering the best performance. Also, the effect of having either more or less diverse sets of member classifiers is considered. © 2003 Springer-Verlag Berlin/Heidelberg.

An app.o.ch to extend p.o.ess automation systems with cooperating subp.o.ess agents is presented in this paper. According to this app.o.ch a society of subp.o.ess agents supervises an ordinary p.o.ess automation system. The functionality of this agent layer includes supervising the lower-level automation system, semi-autonomous reconfiguration of its control logic when needed and query p.o.essing for external systems. In this way the app.o.ch aims for enhancing the operational flexibility of the automation system. The subp.o.ess agents utilize several agent-based cooperation mechanisms in order to be able to perform their tasks. The app.o.ch is demonstrated with a laboratory test p.o.ess where p.o.ess startup and fault-recovery scenarios have been imitated. Experiences from initial test runs are described, too. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.
