The business opportunities in after-sales services such as condition based maintenance were noticed by many vendors of process and automation equipment before adequate standards and architectures became available. Consequently, at a client's premises there are many units of process equipment, software modules and Internet connections that have been installed by different vendors, and this uncoordinated work has created serious interoperability, maintainability and security problems. This paper proposes an open standards-based service architecture for industrial telematics that supports interoperability, software component lifecycle management and secure execution and communication of components in a multi-vendor environment. © 2004 IEEE.

This paper discusses globally distributed telematics applications in the environmental monitoring and industrial automation application areas. The requirements on the necessary distributed computing infrastructure are described. Based on these requirements, the usefulness of component-based software architectures and open service architectures is discussed, and the applicability of the open ServicesGateway initiative (oSGi) in these applications is evaluated.

An approach to extend process automation systems with cooperating subprocess agents is presented in this paper. According to this approach a society of subprocess agents supervises an ordinary process automation system. The functionality of this agent layer includes supervising the lower-level automation system, semi-autonomous reconfiguration of its control logic when needed and query processing for external systems. In this way the approach aims for enhancing the operational flexibility of the automation system. The subprocess agents utilize several agent-based cooperation mechanisms in order to be able to perform their tasks. The approach is demonstrated with a laboratory test process where process startup and fault-recovery scenarios have been imitated. Experiences from initial test runs are described, too. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

The key measurement instruments in the control of the base metal flotation are the on-line elemental analyzers like the Courier X-ray fluorescence analyzer. The calibration of the analyser is one of the key factors in the operation of the X-ray fluorescence analyser. The quality of the analyses is limited by the quality of the calibration of the assay calculation model. The co-linearity of the measurement information is problematic for the multi-linear regression used in the assay calculation and calibration. In this study two new regression methods are introduced for the assay calculation and calibration: principal Component Regression and partial Least Squares regression. These methods utilize the idea of internal structure of data - latent structure that handles the co-linearity internally.

The MpEG-7 standard is emerging as both a general framework for content description and a collection of specific, agreed-upon content descriptors. We have developed a neural, self-organizing technique for content-based image retrieval. In this paper, we apply the visual content descriptors provided by MpEG-7 in our picSoM system and compare our own image indexing technique with a reference system based on vector quantization. The results of our experiments show that the MpEG-7-defined content descriptors can be used as such in the picSoM system even though Euclidean distance calculation, inherently used in the picSoM system, is not optimal for all of them. Also, the results indicate that the picSoM technique is a bit slower than the reference system in starting to find relevant images. However, when the strong relevance feedback mechanism of picSoM begins to function, its retrieval precision exceeds that of the reference system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The Self-organizing Map (SoM) is an efficient tool for visualization and clustering of multidimensional data. It transforms the input vectors on two-dimensional grid of prototype vectors and orders them. The ordered prototype vectors are easier to visualize and explore than the original data. Mobile networks produce a huge amount of spatio-temporal data. The data consists of parameters of base stations (BS) and quality information of calls. There are two alternatives in starting the data analysis. We can build either a general one-cell-model trained using state vectors from all cells, or a model of the network using state vectors with parameters from all mobile cells. In both methods, further analysis is needed to understand the reasons for various operational states of the entire network. © 2001 IEEE.
