Effectiveness of Educational Delivery Modes: A Study in computer information systems

Starting with the advent of the Internet, the concept of online distance education became a more vibrant and viable alternative and has grown rapidly. With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic and low-cost Internet-based videoconferencing, more hybrid options have become the standard in the current pandemic global environment. This study explores the evolution of student perceived effectiveness of online, hybrid, and on-ground course delivery methods so that when the pandemic abates, we can make better decisions on the viability of online and blended learning options. Survey results of over 400 students studying computer information systems at three universities in 2017-2020 show that students have consistently perceived courses offered on-ground with an online supplement as being the most effective and such perception does not vary significantly based on age or gender. Students have the lowest perception of effectiveness for completely online courses. Moreover, the computer information systems subject matter being taught does not change students’ perceived effectiveness of the instructional delivery methods © 2021,Journal of information systems Education. Biometric-Based Secure Encryption Key Generation Using Convolutional Neural Networks and Particle Swarm Optimization

With the rapid expansion of computer networks and information technology, ensuring secure data transmission is increasingly vital—especially for image data, which often contains sensitive information. This research presents a biometric-based encryption system that uses fingerprint recognition and deep learning to generate strong, random encryption keys. Two convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are employed: one to verify identity based on a user’s ID and another to extract fingerprint features for key generation. These keys are optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), enhancing their randomness and resistance to brute-force attacks. The system generates keys in real-time, eliminating the need for storage and minimizing the risk of theft or leakage. To further improve security, encryption keys are automatically updated after every ten messages, with different keys generated from multiple fingerprints of the same individual. Testing with the SOCOFing dataset (6,000 original and 49,270 synthetic images) achieved 99.75% identity verification and 99.83% classification accuracy. Performance metrics—entropy of 7.89, correlation factor of 0.00628, and zero repetition—demonstrate high robustness. This approach offers a secure, adaptive, and personalized encryption method ideal for sensitive domains like finance and healthcare. © 2025 Slovene Society Informatika. All rights reserved.

Enhanced Distance-based Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm for Data Classification

The k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) algorithm is one of the most widely used techniques for data classification. However, the imbalanced class is a key problem for its declining performance. Therefore, the kNN algorithm is kept updated to mitigate this problem’s effects. Following the pattern of the literature, our paper proposes a novel weighted kNN that aims to significantly reduce the negative consequences of this problem. An enhanced distance-based weighted KNN, EDWkNN, is developed to improve the overall KNN performance. For the test sample, the number of neighbors (k) is initially determined. Next, normalized weights are computed for these neighbors and assigned a value between 0 and 1. The weights of the nearest and farthest neighbors are 1 and 0, respectively. The weight values of the remaining neighbors range from 0 to 1, with the closest one having a heavier weight and the farthest neighbor having a lower weight value. In extreme circumstances, a few neighbors have equal distance from the test sample, leading to assigning uniform weights to each of these neighbors. Further, the EDWkNN considers both the magnitude of the distance and the proximity of neighbors. Comparing EDWkNN to its state-of-the-art rivals, its simplistic architecture and competitive performance demonstrate its uniqueness. In four experimental phases, a thorough assessment study is conducted utilizing four evaluation metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, and MAE) over forty-four datasets. The findings show that, on average and for individual k values, EDWkNN is substantially promising. Copyright © 2025 KSII.

Securing smart cities: privacy-preserving IoT with optimized gated lounge attention dropout mechanism

The emerging use of Internet of Things (IoT) raises concerns about the security and privacy of personal data. With numerous devices collecting sensitive information, safeguarding privacy in large urban infrastructures is challenging. Blockchain technology provides a solution by enabling secure, decentralized data transmission, ensuring data integrity through its immutability and transparency. Sustainable cities, which rely on IoT for efficient resource management, require robust privacy protection to maintain trust and ensure the success of IoT-based ***, conventioanlapproaches strugglesinprocessinghuge data while ensuring privacy protection within IoT networks. This paper proposes a novel approach, the Optimized Gated Lounge Attention Dropout (OGLD) mechanism, aimed at improving privacy preservation in smart IoT infrastructures, particularly in sustainable cities. As urban areas increasingly integrate IoT devices for enhanced resource management, ensuring the security and privacy of collected data becomes paramount. To address these challenges, the OGLD method is combined with blockchain technology, enabling decentralized and secure data transmission. This integration safeguards sensitive data from unauthorized access while maintaining reliable communication between devices. Additionally, several preprocessing techniques are incorporated in the OGLD approach to standardize raw data, reducing noise and inconsistencies, and enhancing overall model performance. A Crossover strategy-based Coati optimization method is utilized to fine-tune model parameters, improving adaptability to varying data characteristics and increasing the effectiveness. The effectiveness of the OGLD approach through multiple performance metrics, is evaluated demonstrating an accuracy of 98.56%. The results indicate that the OGLD method outperforms existing techniques, showcasing its superior capability in securing privacy within smart IoT frameworks. © The Author(s), under exclus

Customers’ satisfaction prediction is a vital process for all business organizations to draw new customers and maintain existing customers. One of the most efficient methods to predict customers' satisfaction is classifying customers' feedback. In the real world, customer’s feedback is ambiguous, confusing and inconsistent. This option can be stated in neutrosophic logic as indeterminacy membership, associated with truth and falsity membership. In this study, a classification model based on neutrosophic sets to handle the inconsistency of customer responses is presented. Also, significant factors that impact customers' satisfaction are defined. In order to show the procedures and the application of the proposed method, a case study to determine the customers' satisfaction while using food order application (Talabat) in Egypt is presented. A comparison between the classical classification models and the proposed model based on neutrosophic sets is presented. The experimental results indicate that the proposed classifying model achieved accuracy results around 95.36% to 99.95%, higher than the classical one that achieve around 90.3% to 93.99%. Next, a sensitivity analysis is performed for reliability validation as to determine the most factors that affect customers’ satisfaction. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.

How does one teach introductory information systems concepts along with application software to students with a variety of backgrounds? information systems literacy courses such as this exist in many University core curriculums. What can be done to help the students see the value of this course as it applies to their major, no matter what it may be? This paper provides the results of surveys done with non-computer information systems majors who were taking a required University core course in information systems. Results highlight the disconnect felt by the students towards the information System topics and their major area of study. Student attitudes toward the course are discussed, along with recommendations for course structure and content. In an effort to bridge the gap the students feel between the information systems topics and their major, a specific approach to teaching the course is presented with the information systems topics linked to their major. Having a strong background with computers will make the student more marketable to the perspective employer. © 2006 EDSIG.

The Association of information Technology Professionals (AITP) offers students, especially those majoring in computer information systems (CIS), a number of opportunities and benefits. Even though it seems that most if not all CIS majors would join AITP, we have discovered that a majority of CIS majors at our university have not joined our local student chapter. To better understand why some students have not joined AITP, we first conducted interviews with CIS majors, both AITP members and non-AITP members, to elicit their perceptions, thoughts, and opinions about AITP. Based upon the findings from the interviews, we then surveyed fifty students at our institution. We tested for significant differences between AITP members and non-AITP members. We discovered that some students have misperceptions about AITP. We also found that certain peer influences are important in encouraging students to join the organization. In addition, we discovered that several factors, such as time and money, may prevent students from joining AITP. We also found that some students have strong feelings, both positive and negative, about how AITP is run at our university. Future researchers and stakeholders can use our study's results to focus on the factors which influence CIS and related majors whether to join their local AITP student chapter. © 2007 EDSIG.

There is considerable debate among students as to the usefulness of attending the lab portion of information systems courses. The purpose of this paper is to present evidence of the relationship between lab attendance and the academic performance of students in one computer information systems course over a three-semester period. This relationship was tested using data collected from 118 undergraduate students in the required lab potion of a lower-level computer information systems course. The study analyzed attendance records and course grades from three consecutive semesters of the same course using Spearman's correlation coefficient. After conducting statistical analyses, results indicate that higher attendance rates in the lab do lead to higher academic performance by students. ©2005 EDSIG.

Many U.S. universities have recently encountered decreases in computer-related majors, including computer information systems (CIS), even though there is a shortage of skilled IS professionals. A disproportionate number of females choose to major in CIS. Previous research has cited various reasons why females may not choose computer-related majors. We began our study by using structured interviews to better understand why College of Business students at our university choose to major (or not major) in CIS. Based upon the interview findings, we then created and administered an online survey to 100 students at three U.S. universities to capture quantitative data for analysis. We based this survey upon the theory of planned behavior. This theory has been used in previous research to determine why people intend to behave in a certain manner. Even though students indicated that certain groups of importance to them (such as parents and professors) influence their actions, these referent groups strongly believe that students should NOT major or double-major in CIS. The interviews and surveys also indicated that students lack knowledge about the CIS major and believe that it is a difficult major. Future researchers and stakeholders can use our study's results to focus on the most influential factors that encourage or discourage females to enter the CIS major. © 2007 EDSIG.
