The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. We propose a new feature selection procedure based on a combination of a pruning algorithm, Apriori mining techniques and fuzzy C-mean clustering. The feature selection algorithm is designed to mine on a multiresolution filter bank composed of rotationally invariant moments. The numerical experiments, with more than 10,000 images, demonstrate an accuracy increase of about 5% for a low noise, 15% for an average noise and 20% for a high-level noise.

In the treasure hunting process, the hunters could only get few hints with simple words, therefore they must think over with the experience they learned before. The goal of this paper is to propose a treasure hunting learning model and implement a system based on the model. Within the treasure hunting learning model students will become a treasure hunter when they are learning in the field. The learning model makes learning more fun by asking students some questions according to their learning records and physical position. In order to make the system portable and treasure hunting liked, we implement the treasure hunting learning model with the most simple and common cellphone, that is the text-mode cellphone. To verify the learning model is working, a traditional history and culture course in college was taken as the experiment. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper describes an approach for generating customized benchmark applications from a software architecture description using a Model Driven Architecture (MDA) approach. The benchmark generation and performance data capture tool implementation is based on widely used open source MDA frameworks. The business logic of the benchmark application is modeled in UML and generated by taking advantage of the existing generation "cartridges" so that the current component technology can be exploited in the benchmark. This greatly reduces the effort and expertise needed for benchmarking with complex component technology. We have also extended the MDA framework to model and generate a load testing suite and automatic performance measurement infrastructure. The approach complements current model-based performance prediction and analysis methods by generating the benchmark application from the same application architecture that the performance models are derived from. This provides the potential for tightly integrating runtime performance measurement with model-based prediction either for model validation or improving model prediction accuracy, We illustrate the approach using a case study based on EJB component technology.

This paper designs a personalized navigation service based on the student cognitive levels. The personalized navigation service takes the interpretive structural modeling to generate concept navigation matrix by using the student cognitive background matrix (retrieved from tests and questionnaire) and the concept relation matrix (retrieved from textbooks). According to the knowledge structure and the concept navigation matrix, the service can provide different students their own knowledge navigation maps. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper designs a learning notification express delivery service for providing students information about their learning status, their next learning activities, and even reminder notes. The learning notification express delivery service uses Petri-net for modeling learning activities. Remote experimentation is the process of conducting real lab experiments without being physically in contact with lab devices. Recently, the development of Internet technologies fostered the spread of online laboratories, and significant benefits helped establish remote experimentation as a potential substitute to real experimentation. Internetworking lab experiments usually involve very expensive hardware;and providing remote access to this type of laboratories is highly desired, especially when a large number of students must share a limited set of devices. Very few remote internetworking laboratories have previously been implemented, and they had several drawbacks. In this paper, we discuss our design of a Remote Internetworking Laboratory which provided access to the internetworking lab at the American University of Beirut (AUB). The uniqueness of our approach is that it uses VLANs (Virtual LANs) to build network topologies, a technique that separates network subnets into different broadcast domains before allowing users to configure each lab device. The proposed scheme overcomes the limitations of other designs, and allows users to build any desired network topology and configure the lab devices in real-time. Many technical and educational features were integrated into the system, and possible enhancements were suggested based on several evaluation criteria. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

We develop a game theoretic model for studying when interconnected Internet Service Providers (ISP)s will decide to upgrade their networks. We are in particular interested in network upgrades to better accommodate real-time applications like voice over IP, but our game model is applicable to other types of upgrade. Achieving the full benefit from network upgrades requires that enough ISPs upgrade so that the users' traffic encounters only upgraded ISPs as it traverses the Internet. This situation gives rise to two important effects. One effect is that providers are reluctant to be first to invest in an upgrade when the full benefit of the upgrade cannot be achieved until their peers do the same. The second effect is that when a provider upgrades, the quality of the Internet as a whole increases, increasing demand, and thereby increasing revenue for all ISPs - including those who have not invested in the upgrade. This free-rider effect gives providers a temptation to not upgrade and instead enjoy the benefits of their peers upgrading. Our game model takes into account both effects, and finds sufficient conditions for it to be a Nash equilibrium the ISPs involved in the game to decide to upgrade. There are a large number of other equilibria for this game, so we also find stronger conditions under which the Nash equilibrium in which all providers upgrade is the unique Nash equilibrium. Another important feature of network upgrade costs is that they are declining as technology improves. We extend our original game model for upgrades to take into account declining upgrade costs and study what effects this has on the game's outcome.

The research field of Intelligent Service Robots, which has become more and more popular over the last years, covers a wide range of applications from climbing machines for cleaning large storefronts to robotic assistance for disabled or elderly people. When developing service robot software, it is a challenging problem to design the robot architecture by carefully considering user needs and requirements, implement robot application components based on the architecture, and integrate these components in a systematic and comprehensive way for maintainability and reusability. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to communicate among development teams and with others when many engineers from different teams participate in developing the service robot. To solve these problems, we applied the COMET design method, which uses the industry-standard UML notation, to developing the software of an intelligent service robot for the elderly, called T-Rot, under development at Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR). In this paper, we discuss our experiences with the project in which we successfully addressed these problems and developed the autonomous navigation system of the robot with the COMET/UML method. Despite many years of research in the area of human computer interaction, there are still remarkably few computing platforms in existence that permit remote collaboration over various software applications in an intense manner. Visualisation and interaction on a collaborative access table (ViCAT) is a new project whose aim is to allow intense collaboration between multiple users at multiple remotely located sites, as if the users were gathered around a physical table. This paper introduces the ViCAT design philosophy and how it addresses the mixed presence groupware concept, and then describes the relationship between the ViCAT project and current horizontal interactive human computer systems research.
