Novel occlusion object removal with inter-frame editing and texture synthesis

In this paper, an effective occlusion object removal scheme based on inter- frame editing and texture synthesis is proposed, which can be used to realize the seamless filling for the undesired objects during taking photograph. The principle idea of the proposed scheme is to fully taking advantage of the information of recorded frames during the preparing time before pressing the shutter. First, by inter-frame editing, the moving region can be detected and extracted with the frame difference and OR operation. Since the desired foreground object is often stationary, thus, the extracted moving region, i.e., the undesired moving object, can be basically filled with the inter-frame information. The post-processing consisting of the inter-frame and intra-frame texture synthesis can be further utilized to remove residual moving region and undesired stationary object, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © 2016.

This article introduces research technologies that visitors were able to experience through the exhibits and through the official application of this event.

Wireless body area network (WBAN) plays an important part in mobile healthcare. WBAN can be imagined as a small wireless local area network around our body. In WBAN, there exist three roles: sensors, gateway, and healthcare center. However, the communication distance between sensors and gateway is only 1-2 meters. If the gateway is lost or leaves the range of WBAN consisting of the sensors, the sensed data will not be aggregated and forwarded. Furthermore, the original gateway holds the long-term key shared with the healthcare center, but the user's devices which may serve as the backup gateway do not hold the long-term key. In order to deal with the problems, we propose a key reconstruction protocol for WBAN. In the proposed protocol, the original gateway enables the backup gateway to reconstruct a temporary token, and the backup gateway will use the temporary token to establish a secure channel with the healthcare center without using the long-term key of the original gateway.

AIM:To develop a novel 3-dimensional(3D) virtual hepatectomy simulation software,Liversim,to visualize the real-time deformation of the ***:We developed a novel real-time virtual hepatectomy simulation software program called Liversim. The software provides 4 basic functions:viewing 3D models from arbitrary directions,changing the colors and opacities of the models,deforming the models based on user interaction,and incising the liver parenchyma and intrahepatic vessels based on user operations. From April 2010 through 2013,99 patients underwent virtual hepatectomies that used the conventional software program SYNAPSE VINCENT preoperatively. Between April 2012 and October 2013,11 patients received virtual hepatectomies using the novel software program Liversim; these hepatectomies were performed both preoperatively and at the same that the actual hepatectomy was performed in an operating room. The perioperative outcomes were analyzed between the patients for whom SYNAPSE VINCENT was used and those for whom Liversim wasused. Furthermore,medical students and surgical residents were asked to complete questionnaires regarding the new ***:There were no obvious discrepancies(i.e.,the emergence of branches in the portal vein or hepatic vein or the depth and direction of the resection line) between our simulation and the actual surgery during the resection process. The median operating time was 304 min(range,110 to 846) in the VINCENT group and 397 min(range,232 to 497) in the Liversim group(P = 0.30). The median amount of intraoperative bleeding was 510 m L(range,18 to 5120) in the VINCENT group and 470 m L(range,130 to 1600) in the Liversim group(P = 0.44). The median postoperative stay was 12 d(range,6 to 100) in the VINCENT group and 13 d(range,9 to 21) in the Liversim group(P = 0.36). There were no significant differences in the preoperative outcomes between the two groups. Liversim was not found to be clinically inferior to SYNAPSE VINCENT. Both

This article describes the motivation, design, and progress of the Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS). JOSS is a free and open-access journal that publishes articles describing research software. It has the dual goals of improving the quality of the software submitted and providing a mechanism for research software developers to receive credit. While designed to work within the current merit system of science, JOSS addresses the dearth of rewards for key contributions to science made in the form of software. JOSS publishes articles that encapsulate scholarship contained in the software itself, and its rigorous peer review targets the software components: functionality, documentation, tests, continuous integration, and the license. A JOSS article contains an abstract describing the purpose and functionality of the software, references, and a link to the software archive. The article is the entry point of a JOSS submission, which encompasses the full set of software artifacts. Submission and review proceed in the open, on GitHub. Editors, reviewers, and authors work collaboratively and openly. Unlike other journals, JOSS does not reject articles requiring major revision;while not yet accepted, articles remain visible and under review until the authors make adequate changes (or withdraw, if unable to meet requirements). Once an article is accepted, JOSS gives it a digital object identifier (DOI), deposits its metadata in Crossref, and the article can begin collecting citations on indexers like Google Scholar and other services. Authors retain copyright of their JOSS article, releasing it under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. In its first year, starting in May 2016, JOSS published 111 articles, with more than 40 additional articles under review. A new algorithm is proposed for robust principal component analysis with predefined sparsity patterns. The algorithm is then applied to separate the singing voice from the instrumental accompaniment using vocal activity information. To evaluate its performance, we construct a new publicly available iKala dataset that features longer durations and higher quality than the existing MIR-1K dataset for singing voice separation. Part of it will be used in the MIREX Singing Voice Separation task. Experimental results on both the MIR-1K dataset and the new iKala dataset confirmed that the more informed the algorithm is, the better the separation results are. © 2015 IEEE.

The goal of capstone project is to train students to be able to apply the required knowledge and skill to collaboratively complete the assigned work. The project-based learning (PBL) is a popular strategy used by teachers to guide students to organize teams to solve problem collaboratively and to enhance students' creative and problem solving abilities in capstone project. However, the traditional PBL strategy cannot effectively enhance the students' abilities because the previous good cases cannot be easily shared and reused. Therefore, our idea is to develop a good platform to be able to share and reuse the cases together with portfolios to motivate student's imaginative power and creativity and the teachers can easily assess the students' learning achievements. Because Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) techniques consisting of cases retrieve, reuse, revise and retain can be used to model the computer reasoning, we develop a project-based learning platform using the CBR techniques to provide the case scaffoldings and reserve the learning portfolio. We further design an experiment based upon our learning platform to complete the e-book visual creative design. The experimental result shows that the given appropriate learning scaffoldings can guide students to improve the creative and problem solving abilities.

Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.

We present a user-friendly suggestive interface for sketch-based character posing. Our interface provides suggestive information on the sketching canvas in succession by combining image retrieval technique with 3D character posing, while the user is drawing. The system highlights the canvas region where the user should draw on and constrains the user's sketches in a reasonable solution space. This is based on an efficient image descriptor, which is used to measure the distance between the user's sketch and 2D views of 3D poses. In order to achieve faster query response, local sensitive hashing is involved in our system. In addition, sampling-based optimization algorithm is adopted to synthesize and optimize the retrieved 3D pose to match the user's sketches the best. Experiments show that our interface can provide smooth suggestive information to improve the reality of sketching poses and shorten the time required for 3D posing. © 2015 The Author(s) computer Graphics Forum.
