The efficiency of creating stories by writers is very important for publishing a plentiful supply of products in the market. Although there are only a handful of matured writers, little research has been reported regarding a computational approach to support the creation of stories. In order to help amateur writers with creating well organized stories, we propose a newly developed system based on the four templates. In this paper, we constructed a system referring to the previous study and presented the outline of the novel system by utilizing templates. To confirm the efficiency of templates, user experiments were performed. From the experiments, we found that the backgrounds of characters are the most significant ingredient for the creation of attractive stories. Finally, we discuss the requirements for developing our system.

This paper investigates the incorporation of hidden Markov model (HMM) based emphatic speech synthesis for audio exaggeration into an audio-visual speech synthesis framework for the corrective feedback in computer-aided pronunciation training (CAPT). To improve the voice quality of the synthetic emphatic speech, this paper proposes a new method for HMM training. In this method, the contextual questions for decision tree building are extended by considering the emphasis-related information. HMMs are then trained using a small scale emphatic corpus together with a large scale neutral corpus. The emphatic corpus is used to ensure the quality of the emphatic speech segments whereas the neutral corpus is to further improve the quality of both the non-emphatic speech segments and the emphatic ones. Finally, emphatic speech synthesis is achieved by extending the Flite+hts-engine. Experimental results show that our method can synthesize emphatic speech with high quality and make the feedback more discriminatively perceptible. © 2015 IEEE.

To solve the acoustic-to-articulatory inversion problem, this paper proposes a deep bidirectional long short term memory recurrent neural network and a deep recurrent mixture density network. The articulatory parameters of the current frame may have correlations with the acoustic features many frames before or after. The traditional pre-designed fixed-length context window may be either insufficient or redundant to cover such correlation information. The advantage of recurrent neural network is that it can learn proper context information on its own without the requirement of externally specifying a context window. Experimental results indicate that recurrent model can produce more accurate predictions for acoustic-to-articulatory inversion than deep neural network having fixed-length context window. Furthermore, the predicted articulatory trajectory curve of recurrent neural network is smooth. Average root mean square error of 0.816 mm on the MNGU0 test set is achieved without any post-filtering, which is state-of-the-art inversion accuracy. © 2015 IEEE.

This study is to develop a multimodal presentation software integrated with interactive whiteboard (IWB) as a multimodal presentation system (MPS) to support the classroom English learning in the elementary English as second language (ESL) course. It focuses primarily on techniques and tools to enhance the students’ ESL learning achievement and learning satisfaction in the classroom setting. This paper utilizes the MPS, based on Mayer's cognitive theory of multimedia learning (CTML), to present the multimedia instructional materials in auditory and visual modalities. An experimental research designed was conducted. The results revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the students in experimental group and control group on measures of learning effectiveness (i.e., academic achievement and learning satisfaction).

Heating load forecasting of municipal steam heating system is an important part of the smart city. According to the forecast results, heating companies can arrange production reasonably and provide heating uniform and stable to improve energy efficiency. For the features of the time series of heating monitor data, we present the optimal GM(1, 1) model based on the metabolic GM(1, 1) model. Results from theoretical analysis, simulations, and experiments show that the performance of the optimal GM(1, 1) model forecasting is effective with smaller error, robustness against outliers and able to meet forecast demand.

Improved locality-sensitive hashing method for the approximate nearest neighbor problem

In recent years, the nearest neighbor search （NNS） problem has been widely used in various interesting applications. Locality-sensitive hashing （LSH）, a popular algorithm for the approximate nearest neighbor problem, is proved to be an efficient method to solve the NNS problem in the high-dimensional and large-scale databases. Based on the scheme of p-stable LSH, this paper introduces a novel improvement algorithm called randomness-based locality-sensitive hashing （RLSH） based on p-stable LSH. Our proposed algorithm modifies the query strategy that it randomly selects a certain hash table to project the query point instead of mapping the query point into all hash tables in the period of the nearest neighbor query and reconstructs the candidate points for finding the nearest neighbors. This improvement strategy ensures that RLSH spends less time searching for the nearest neighbors than the p-stable LSH algorithm to keep a high recall. Besides, this strategy is proved to promote the diversity of the candidate points even with fewer hash tables. Experiments are executed on the synthetic dataset and open dataset. The results show that our method can cost less time consumption and less space requirements than the p-stable LSH while balancing the same recall.

The advent of the cloud computing era, the amount of application data increasing sharply, personalized recommendation technology seems increasingly important. However, applying traditional recommendation technology directly to cloud computing environment, which facing the problems of memory and speed. Consequently, the performance of recommended mechanisms degrades drastically. To address this issue, we propose cloud services recommendation model based on chord ring, this model introducing chord ring which based on distributed storage model of cloud computing, sorting service unit collection which has great influences on the process of recommendation, ensuring recommends system quick retrieving candidate service sets;on which proposing a recommendation algorithm based on weighted bipartite network, predicting top-k recommendation set of target users. The experimental results show that the mechanism can improve the recommendation accuracy and recommend efficiency effectively.

In order to realize friendly man-machine communication, machines must understand not only surface expressions of human utterance but also deep meanings of human behavior. We started compilation of “paraphrase representation list of compound verbs” as the first step of investigation and standardization of lexical items which is a part of “control language for action”. We processed the corpus and vectorized the data by using Word2Vec. Using the created vector, we performed a calculation of similarity between the compound verbs and verbs in a corpus by cosine similarity, and created a paraphrase representation list. We got paraphrase expressions for 1899 compound verbs among 3289 compound verbs (including orthographic variants) stored in the compound verb lexicon. We found by this method words which do not exist in the Japanese WordNet. We investigated the words that exist only in the result of automatic extraction, and found that there are 213 unknown words and 227 new synonymous relationship. What is worthy of special mention is that there is 14 differences between the unknown word and a new synonymous relationship, which means we could find 14 words which are stored in the Japanese WordNet, but are not considered as synonyms of a word. We can say that the proposed method is useful for the expansion of paraphrase relationship listed by human intuitions.
