An extensible model for uncertain RFID data in supply Chains

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is widely used to trace objects. However, RFID application systems can not effectively and efficiently use massive uncertain data. This study considers some properties of objects captured by sensor and GPS and proposes a comprehensive extensible model for uncertain data according to key features of RFID data which is suitable to different application scenarios. The model can effectively and efficiently store different RFID data according to key features of RFID data and supports a variety of queries for tracking and tracing RFID objects. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific information.

RVM based compressed sensing for optical fiber pipeline data compression

Due to long time continuous operation and the high sampling rate, the distributed optical fiber pre-warning system will generate vast amounts of data. Compressed sensing can sample and compress the signal at the same time thus reduce the data amount to be stored or transferred. Therefore, this article uses compressed sensing approach to compress the optical fiber pre-warning data. In compressed sampling phase, the signal is classified using sparse detection method, then more measurements will be taken for the segment containing threatening event than the segment of normal operation, through this the amount of data can be further reduced. In the signal reconstruction phase, the signal compressed sampling process is modeled by the relevant vector machine and the signal recovery is implemented by probabilistic parameter estimation methods. Using Bayesian framework, the sparsity of the signal and the noise each is modeled by a prior. The sparsity and the noise can be estimated in parameter estimation process and the sparsity needn't be given in advance. The optical fiber pre-warning system is long-running system and the sparsity of the signal will change with time, so the automatic sparsity determination ability is superior to other existing recovery methods. Experimental results show that, under the same measurement, the proposed method can reconstruct the signal with high quality and the reconstructed signal will not affect the positioning result. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific information.

The rapid development in wireless technologies and multimedia services has given rise to new requirements for the Internet, such as supporting billions of mobile devices and transmitting huge amount of multimedia content in real time. Content-Centric Networking (CCN), a future Internet architecture for efficient content dissemination, has been attracting ever-increasing attention from both academia and industry. In this paper, a new analytical model is developed as a cost-effective tool to investigate the performance of caching in CCN under bursty content requests. The accuracy of the model is validated through comparing the analytical results with those obtained from the extensive simulation experiments. As an example of its applications, the analytical model is used to investigate the effects of the cache size, content size, and bursty content requests on the cache hit ratio in CCN.

Rewriting queries for inconsistent data based on directed join graphs

Inconsistency may arise when data are integrated together with respect to a given set of integrity constraints. Many techniques can identify inconsistent data by ad-hoc ways but inconsistent data can not be managed effectively. To judge a query is rewritable, the work analyses whether the join graph for the query is directed. Also, the work presents an approach for computing tuple probabilities and a basic technique for query rewriting. The experiments use the data and queries of the TPC-H specification to compare performance for degrees of inconsistencies and the results show that the approach is effective and feasible. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific information.

Optical fiber pipeline data compression based on segment sequential compressed sensing

In distributed optical fiber pipeline pre-warning system, the sampling rate is very high for threatening event location, so vast data will be generated. Huge amount of data is inconvenient for transfer or storage. Because compressive sensing is a widely used methods for sampling and compressing data in the same time in recent years, this study adopts the compressive sensing approach to reduce the data quantity. In compressive sensing, the sparsity of each segment is important for signal recovery and it controls the measurement number needed for certain recovery accuracy of the recovered signal. The sparsity should be known in advance to determine the measurement number, but it is difficult to achieve. This is specially exemplified in optical fiber pipeline compressive sensing as the optical fiber pipeline data is longtime running data and the sparsity of every segment varies with time. In this study, the sequential approach joint with linear prediction is used to fix the measurement number of each segment. This approach further reduces the amount of data on the basis of compressive sensing. Simulation is carried out on the actual optical fiber pipeline pre-warning data and the experimental results show that the reconstruction SNR could exceed 26 dB. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific information.

The emergence of online education and the fast growing trend of using eLearning environment have been of great interest to the teaching faculty of institutes of higher learning. The use of such a platform for educating students in the various disciplines of engineering has, in particular, triggered much interest. In fact, many academic institutes are now turning to online engineering as the panacea to combat the issue of low enrollment. This latest trend has led to significant structural changes worldwide in engineering education. However, this shift to the eLearning environment has failed to successfully solve issues relating to quality, effectiveness, and the feasibility of conducting online laboratory experiments. The rapidly changing technological landscape has also forced educators to devise, implement, and later evaluate innovative pedagogical approaches without rejecting the positive aspects of traditional skills and approaches. In this effort remotely accessible experimental setups are being developed and implemented. Tools such as podcasting, synchronous sessions, and threaded discussions are used to further enhance students' learning experience of online education without sacrificing the traditional advantages of online learning which include the flexibility of taking courses anytime, independent of geographical boundaries. This paper summarizes the step-by-step approach that was adopted by SETM for the design, development, implementation, and assessment of our online engineering degree programs. Some of the various features that were used, such as online laboratories, tablets with inking technology, serious game development, and synchronous discussion sessions have succeeded in making our online programs very unique and attractive to both traditional and non-traditional students. ©American Society for engineering education, 2013.

Existing image layer representations methods are very feed-forward, and then not able to deal with small ambiguities. A probabilistic model is proposed, and it learns and deduces each layer in that hierarchy together. Therefore, we consider a recursive probabilistic decomposition process, and derive a new yielded method based on recursive Latent Dirichlet Allocation. We show 2 significant properties of the novel probabilistic method: 1) pulsing another hierarchical to represent the enhanced results on that smooth method;2) an entire Bayesian method beats a feed-forward running of the novel method. The method can be evaluated on a criterion recognition dataset. It takes the probability of recursive decomposition process into account, and obtains multilayer structure pyramid LDA derived model through the derivation. Experiments demonstrate that the novel technique beats existing hierarchical approaches, and present better performance. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

In this paper, we investigate the personal epistemology of computing students, that is, their conceptions of knowledge and learning. We review some models of personal epistemological development and describe one of the questionnaire tools that have been used to assess the epistemological beliefs of students studying in other disciplines. We describe an experiment that uses one of these tools, together with exploratory factor analysis, to determine the dimensions of epistemological beliefs of a cohort of computing students and compare the results with that reported in other contexts. The results, while not reproducing the details of previous work, do seem to suggest that there are indeed multiple dimensions to personal epistemology, and that these can be identified, to a large extent, with those recognised by other researchers. Finally, we make some observations about the importance of personal epistemology for learning in computer Science and outline further work in this area. Copyright 2013 ACM.

We propose a routing scheme called energy-efficient beaconless geographic routing with energy supply (EBGRES) for wireless sensor networks. EBGRES provides loop-free, fully stateless, energy-efficient source-to-sink routing with minimal communication overhead without the help of prior neighborhood knowledge. It locally determines the duty-cycle of each node, based on an estimated energy budget for each period, which includes the currently available energy, the predicted energy consumption and the energy expected from the harvesting device. In EBGRES, each node sends out the data packet first rather than a control message. By sending a data packet first, EBGRES performs the neighbor selection only among those neighbors that successfully received the data packet. EBGRES uses a three-way (DATA/ACK/SELECT) handshake and a timer-assignment function, the Discrete Dynamic Forwarding Delay (DDFD). We investigate the lower and upper bounds on hop count and the upper bound on energy consumption under EBGRES for source-to-sink routing. We further demonstrate the expected total energy consumption along a route toward the sink with the proposed EBGRES approach including a lower bound on energy consumption when the node density increases. "Personal Epistemology" is the analysis of the ways in which an individual perceives what constitutes knowledge, its boundaries, how it is justified, and how it is related to learning. While investigation of metacognitive strategies used by students is now an established research topic within computer Science and information technology education, the study of personal epistemology is relatively undeveloped. This is so despite there being significant epistemological issues associated with learning the subject itself, such as those concerned with the way in which programming exercises change from convergent to divergent problems, or the process by which software project management problems very quickly become ill-defined. In this paper, we describe a preliminary investigation into the personal epistemology of two cohorts of computing students. We review some models of personal epistemological development and describe an empirical study in which we investigated the dimensions of epistemological beliefs of two cohorts of computing students. The results show that there appears to be a wide range of epistemological belief amongst computing students. Finally, we make some observations about the importance of personal epistemology for learning in computer Science and outline further work in this area. © 2013 IEEE.
