The need of communication protocols in todaypsilas environment increases as much as the network explores. Many new kinds of protocols, e.g. for information sharing, security, etc., are being developed day-to-day which often leads to rapid, premature developments. Many protocols have not scaled to satisfy important properties like deadlock and livelock freedom, since MDA focuses on the rapid development rather than on the quality of the developed models. In order to fix the above, we introduce a 2-Phase strategy based on the UML state machine and sequence diagram to satisfy the properties of communication protocols. We convert these models into PROMELA code for execution on the SPIN model checker. The results are compared with the developed UML models.

We introduce the DeMorgan gate, an Independence of Causal Interactions (ICI) model that is capable of modeling opposing inuences, i.e., a mixture of positive and negative inuences of parents on a child. The model is a noisy version of a conjunctive normal form of Boolean functions and is an extension and a combination of the popular Noisy OR and Noisy-AND models, preserving their intuitive semantics. We report the results of a simple experiment testing the usefulness of the proposed model for elicitation of conditional probability distributions.

In recent years, technologies have been introduced offering a large amount of computing and networking resources. New applications such as Google AdSense and BitTorrent can profit from the use of these resources. An efficient way of discovering and reserving these resources is by using the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. SOA can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. This paper presents an architecture that can be used to support end-to-end resource virtualization for Web 2.0 applications and in particular for peer-to-peer applications by using the Service Oriented Architecture concept. © 2008 IEEE.

In a recent paper, a robust water-marking approach for hiding grayscale image watermark into digital images based on SVD (singular value decomposition) is proposed by Shich et al. This comment demonstrates that the high robustness of the proposed scheme against various attacks is a result of improper algorithm design. The extracted watermark is just determined by the reference watermark used during the extraction process no matter what the input suspected image is.

For a clustering algorithm, the number of clusters is a key parameter since it is directly related to the number of homogenous regions in the given image. Although ISODATA clustering algorithm can determine the number of clusters and cluster centers dynamically, it is challenging to specify so many parameters. The possibility clustering provides the memberships that are interpreted as the degrees of possibility. So the memberships in one class are not related to the memberships in other classes. By taking the advantages of these two clustering algorithms, a new fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed by combining the possibility clustering and ISODATA clustering algorithm. This new algorithm not only can determine the number of clusters dynamically with the degree of possibility of each date point, but also can reduce the number of input parameters of ISODATA algorithm. The splitting and merging process is evaluated by the possibility distance.

We propose a robust hierarchical background subtraction technique which takes the spatial relations of neighboring pixels in a local region into account to detect objects in difficult conditions. Our algorithm combines a per-pixel with a per-region background model in a hierarchical manner, which accentuates the advantages of each. This is a natural combination because the two models have complementary strengths. The per-pixel background model is achieved by mixture of Gaussians models (GMM) with RGB feature. Although precisely describing background change in high resolution, it suffers from the sensitivity to quick variations in dynamic environment. To tolerate these quick variations, we further develop a novel GMM based per-region background model, which is updated by the cluster centers obtained from a k-means clustering of the pixelspsila RGB feature in the region. Numerical and qualitative experimental results on challenging videos demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method.

We describe our experiments for the High-level Feature Extraction (FE) and Search (SE) tasks. We submitted two automatic runs to the FE task, the first one (MMIS alexei) was based on a probabilistic approach while the second (MMIS ainhoa) was an enhanced version that used background knowledge in the form of statistical co-occurrence of annotation keywords. While previous applications of this approach to other datasets have performed quite well, our results in TRECVID 2008 are not so good. In particular, the performance of the second run was limited by the small vocabulary. For the SE task we submitted two runs: a similarity-based media search (MMIS media) and the required text-only search (MMIS text). The similarity search, using media content, had better precision than the text-only search but had difficulties with some types of queries (e.g., motion-based). Overall, participation in the TRECVID evaluation was a valuable learning experience for our group.

Interdependency among critical infrastructures contributes to vulnerabilities of those infrastructures. In this paper, the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructures are identified and analysed using social network analysis. In the analysis of network centrality, the importance of each critical infrastructure, in terms of its contribution to infrastructure interdependency, is ranked. The findings show that electricity and telecommunication are the two most important critical infrastructures that contribute to infrastructure interdependency, which further render the infrastructure network vulnerable to cascading damage. An example system is given to illustrate the ideas and results presented in this paper. Copyright © 2008 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In this paper, we propose a novel scheme using computing complexity layered scalable video coding (CCLSVC) to optimize the user experience of broadcasting video in the computing capability limited handheld terminals. To address the heterogeneity of computing capability among different handheld devices, we employ hierarchal B reference structure of SVC to divide the frames into multiple computing complexity layers (CC Layers) in server side. The handheld clients simply choose to decode the frames in their corresponding layers in terms of their computation capability to maximize the video PSNR. We have proved that the optimal CC Layers division problem is a precedence constrained scheduling problem, which is an NP-complete problem. And we further propose our fast greedy method to approximately get optimized broadcasting video playback PSNR. The simulation shows that our method is superior to temporal SVC and random frame discarding method.

New data acquisition technologies, such as phasor measurement units (PMU), have been implemented in recent years to operate the power system with more reliability and control by improving the protection schemes like line differential protection or damping the inter-area oscillations. The present standard IEEE C37.118 only provides general information about the testing conditions and requirements, without giving any specifics.. To create the PMU data function for the applications and thereby make the power system more reliable, the appropriate PMU test standards have to be developed and disseminated. Future testing methods should ensure that units from different manufacturers are tested identically and function properly under different repeatable test scenarios and test stand set up conditions. This paper presents experiences from tests of PMU accuracy and calibration conducted in Europe and the USA, which will facilitate the development of future standards. The test stand itself and the test results from the various PMU manufactures are presented, compared and discussed in this paper, taking into account the standardization issues.
