Wireless ad hoc networks are gaining popularity as these networks are self organizing without requiring fixed infrastructure such as servers or access points. Nodes in wireless ad hoc networks are typically low-power devices and in some large scale ad hoc networks such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), there might be tens of thousands of low-power energy constrained nodes in the network. In order to secure group communication for a wireless ad hoc network, the low-power nature of the nodes and the network size has to be taken into consideration. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient and scalable group key agreement (GKA) scheme for wireless ad hoc networks, which uses a generalized circular hierarchical (C-H) group model, where the network is partitioned into subgroups at h different layers and each subgroup is arranged in a circle. Next, we describe the computational and communication energy analysis of a typical node found in ad hoc networks and provide some formulas that can be used to calculate the energy consumption costs for protocols implemented using different microprocessors and radio transceiver modules, A complexity analysis and energy consumption costs analysis conclude that our proposed scheme is the most energy-efficient and scalable GKA scheme as compared to three other GKA protocols. In this research, we propose the assessment navigation system "NAVI-BOY" which supports user/students at social educational facilities, that is, museums and art galleries. We implement a prototype system of NAVI-BOY. Most social educational facilities employ the pamphlet of paper media for navigation such as exhibition introduction and guidance. Recently, there are also many guidance systems in which voice navigations inform users of information including seeing route via earphones. However, it is just the auxiliary function of paper media. It is impossible for paper media to express and explain dynamically. Moreover, even if paper media can show a map of the institution, users sometimes cannot know where they are because some museums have too complicated route. To solve the problems and limitations which paper media have, we propose the navigation system "NAVI-BOY" using the handheld game machine and develop the prototype. "NAVI-BOY" has an "amusement" sense and a "computer game" sense with navigation function/evaluation function. The NAVI-BOY is a novel study support system in social educational facilities.

For each positive integer r ≥ 1, a nondeterministic machine M is r path-bounded if for any input word x, there are r computation paths of M on x. This paper investigates the accepting powers of path-bounded one-way (simple) multihead nondeterministic finite automata. It is shown that for each k ≥ 2 and r ≥ 1, there is a language accepted by an (r+1) path-bounded one-way nondeterministic k head finite automaton, but not accepted by any r path-bounded one-way nondeterministic k head finite automaton whether or not simple. This paper describes an automatic system for 3D face modeling using frontal and profile images taken by an ordinary digital camera. The system consists of four subsystems including frontal feature detection, profile feature detection, shape deformation, and texture generation modules. The frontal and profile feature detection modules automatically extract the facial parts such as the eye, nose, mouth, and ear. The shape deformation module utilizes the detected features to deform the generic head mesh model such that the deformed model coincides with the detected features. A texture is created by combining the facial textures augmented from the input images and the synthesized texture and mapped onto the deformed generic head model. This paper provides a practical system for 3D face modeling, which is highly automated by aggregating, customizing, and optimizing a bunch of individual computer vision algorithms. The experimental results show a highly automated process of modeling, which is sufficiently robust to various imaging conditions. The whole model creation including all the optional manual corrections takes only 2-3 minutes. © 2005 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

Previous fingerprint verification systems have achieved good results, but these have been affected by the quality of input data. Fingerprint verification systems that use many fingers or multiple impressions of the same finger are more efficient and reliable than systems that use a single finger. However, multiple impressions give inconvenience to the user and increase the overall verification time. Therefore, we use only two fingers (multi-unit fusion) to improve performance of the fingerprint verification system. We show that performance can be improved by selecting a better quality fingerprint image of two fingerprints. Also, we propose a new quality checking algorithm composed of three stages. Our experimental results show that when the quality checking algorithm is performed by selecting a better quality fingerprint image of two fingerprints, there is a significance improvement in performance of the fingerprint verification system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Data mining & statistics analysis is the search for valuable information in large volumes of data. It is now widely used in health care industry. Especially breast cancer is the second most cause of cancer and the second most dangerous cancer. The best way to improve a breast cancer victim's chance of long-term survival is to detect it as early as possible. Currently there are three methods to diagnose breast cancer: mammography, FNA (fine needle aspirate) and surgical biopsy. The diagnose accuracy of mammography is from 68% to 79%, the accuracy of FNA is inconsistent with varying from 65% to 98%t the accuracy of a surgical biopsy is nearly 100%. The procedure of a surgical biopsy, however, is both unpleasant and costly. In this paper, we use a FNA with a data mining & statistics method to get an easy way to achieve a best result. We combine some statistical methods such as PCA, PLS linear regression analysis with data mining methods such as select attribute, decision trees and association rules to find the unsuspected relationships. In addition, the experimental results are shown and discussed.

Research and development projects, in the past decade, has shown that object-oriented(OO) technology could importantly contribute in productivity and reusability improvement. There are various research areas related to 00 technology. Two of major research fields in this area are concerned in issues for CASE tools and component-based technologies. This paper discusses an example of applying component-based technology to a CASE tool. This paper proposes the research experience gained while we have developing OODesigner, an 00 CASE tool, with compound document support functionality based on COM/OLE technology. As OODesigner with compound document support has interoperability with other application software of Windows system, it can provide more powerful documentation environment than other CASE tools. OODesigner can be used not only to model UML diagrams, but also to make documentation cooperatively with various kinds of OLE servers and containers. Therefore we can conduct powerful and consistent documentation with the tool. In this paper, we present design issues for incrementally implementing the compound document support facilities as a container and a server and show a brief sample for demonstrating the usability of the OLE enabled CASE tool.

This paper investigates the effectiveness of the DAEM (Deterministic Annealing EM) algorithm in acoustic modeling for speaker and speech recognition. Although the EM algorithm has been widely used to approximate the ML estimates, it has the problem of initialization dependence. To relax this problem, the DAEM algorithm has been proposed and confirmed the effectiveness in small tasks. In this paper, we applied the DAEM algorithm to speaker recognition based on GMMs and continuous speech recognition based on HMMs. Experimental results show that the DAEM algorithm can improve the recognition performance as compared to the ordinary EM algorithm with conventional initialization methods, especially in the flat start training for continuous speech recognition.
