Research and development projects, in the past decade, have shown that object-oriented (OO) technology could importantly contribute in productivity and reusability improvement. There are various research areas related to OO technology. Two of major research fields in this area are concerned in issues for CASE tools and component- based technologies. This paper discusses an example of applying component-based technology to a CASE tool. This paper proposes the research experience gained while we have developing OODesigner, an OO CASE tool, with compound document support functionality based on COM/OLE technology. As OODesigner with compound document support has interoperability with other application software of Windows system, it can provide more powerful documentation environment than other CASE tools. OODesigner can be used not only to model UML diagrams, but also to make documentation cooperatively with various kinds of OLE servers and containers. Therefore we can conduct powerful and consistent documentation with the tool. In this paper, we present design issues for incrementally implementing the compound document support facilities as a container and a server and show a brief sample for demonstrating the usability of the OLE enabled CASE tool.

Traditional genetic algorithms with elitist selection are unable to locate more than one solution in a multimodal fitness landscape in a single run. This genetic drift is illustrated in Mapex, a smart spatial analysis technique, employing a genetic algorithm for spatial cluster discovery. However, for detecting multiple clusters Mapex provides a non-ideal approach. In this paper, we use a fitness sharing niching technique along with circle overlap detection to enhance Mapex. The results show the suitability of such an approach to locate solutions in a multimodal domain.

This paper investigates the parameter tying strategies of mixtures of factor analyzers (MFA) and discriminative training of MFA for speaker identification. The parameters of factor loading matrices or diagonal matrices are shared in different mixtures of MFA. The minimum classification error (MCE) training is applied to the MFA parameters to enhance the discrimination abilities. The results of text-independent speaker identification experiments show that MFA outperforms the conventional Gaussian mixture models (GMM) with diagonal or full covariance matrices and achieves the best performance when sharing the diagonal matrices, resulting in a relative gain of 26% over the GMM with diagonal covariance matrices. The recognition performance is further improved by the MCE training with an additional 3% error reduction.

This paper describes a new approach to color image rendering for mixed reality applications. The approach has two steps. The first uses neural network based photometric stereo to obtain both a 3D shape model and color reflectance factors simultaneously. The second uses neural network based image rendering to generate realistic virtual images for arbitrary viewpoint and direction of light source. The proposed approach achieves high quality 3D modeling of real objects and subsequent virtual image rendering based on empirical measurements obtained in a simple experimental environment. The approach is empirical using only a standard digital camera and light sources. Assumptions about surface reflectance are reasonably generic. Experiments using real data are demonstrated.

In this paper, we improve the accuracy of the conventional collaborative filtering algorithm by proposing a weighted sifting method. The weighted sifting method preprocesses the given customer data to generate an adjusted customer data which we believe contains less noise than the original one, and thus effectively discriminates the preference weights of items for each customer. We present two alternative calculation methods for weight adjustment, and our experimental evaluation shows that both calculation methods result in better accuracy than traditional collaborative filtering. © 2004 IEEE.

The paper proposes a novel distributed control architecture for shared protection with reduced complete routing information, which aims to initiate a graceful compromise between the amount of link-state dissemination and the performance impairment due to the incompleteness of routing information. We first give explicit and comprehensive descriptions on a number of reported routing information dissemination scenarios for shared protection. A novel framework of link-state dissemination for facilitating shared protection, called reduced complete routing scenario, is introduced, in which the singular value decomposition (SVD) transformation is adopted to deal with the information reduction. We show, through simulation, that the proposed scheme can achieve a higher throughput and a better estimation in reconstruction of the spare provision matrix than the other schemes taking the same complexity of link-state dissemination.

This paper presents an implementation of the 3-view moving picture experts group-2 (MPEG-2) encoder/decoder using the FastImage 1300 board with four Trimedia 1300 processors. First of all, we convert MPEG-2 algorithms into a Trimedia streaming software architecture (TSSA) for real-time implementation. For motion estimation, 32-bit DSP operations are used with two processors in parallel, with one processor performing encoding and decoding. To share data between processors for disparity estimation, we employ a semaphore (for synchronization), queue, and direct memory access (DMA). Experiments show that with DSP board environment the processing times of the implemented 3-view encoder and decoder are reduced by a factor of five and three, respectively, in comparison with PC environment. © 2004 IEEE.

Key challenges in wireless mobile ad hoc networks are computational resource constraints, power limitations, and efficient service discovery techniques. The short range radio network technology Bluetooth suffers from long service discovery delays and high power consumption due to necessary connection establishment between discovering and discovered entity. For improving the efficiency of service discovery in Bluetooth networks we propose two new approaches. By leveraging the implicit broadcast capability of the Bluetooth inquiry procedure, we significantly reduce the service discovery time and hence lower the power consumption. Moreover, we enable the integration of resource limited devices which are incapable of taking part in service discovery themselves. Based on a performance evaluation and a comparison with legacy Bluetooth service discovery protocol (SDP), we present the benefits of our new approaches.
