In this paper, we consider a strongly convex finite-sum minimization problem over a decentralized network and propose a communication-efficient decentralized Newton's method for solving it. The main challenges in designing such an algorithm come from three aspects: (i) mismatch between local gradients/ Hessians and the global ones;(ii) cost of sharing second-order information;(iii) tradeoff among computation and communication. To handle these challenges, we first apply dynamic average consensus (DAC) so that each node is able to use a local gradient approximation and a local Hessian approximation to track the global gradient and Hessian, respectively. Second, since exchanging Hessian approximations is far from communication-efficient, we require the nodes to exchange the compressed ones instead and then apply an error compensation mechanism to correct for the compression noise. Third, we introduce multistep consensus for exchanging local variables and local gradient approximations to balance between computation and communication. With novel analysis, we establish the globally linear (resp., asymptotically super-linear) convergence rate of the proposed method when m is constant (resp., tends to infinity), where m ≥ 1 is the number of consensus inner steps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first super-linear convergence result for a communication-efficient decentralized Newton's method. Moreover, the rate we establish is provably faster than those of first-order methods. Our numerical results on various applications corroborate the theoretical findings. Recent progresses have revealed that quantum systems with multiple position-dependent couplings, e.g., giant atoms, can exhibit some unconventional phenomena, such as non-exponential decay etc. However, their potential applications are still open questions. In this paper, we propose a giant-cavity-based quantum sensor for the first time, whose performance can be greatly enhanced compared to traditional cavity-based sensors. In our proposal, two cavities couple to a dissipative reservoir at multiple points while they couple to a gain reservoir in a single-point way. To detecting a unknown parameter using this sensor, a waveguide is coupled to one of the cavities where detecting fields can pass through for homodyne detection. We find that multiple position-dependent couplings can induce an inherent non-reciprocal coupling between the cavities, which can enhance the performance of sensors. Output noise in our scheme can be reduced to the shot noise level, which is about one order magnitude lower than the results in Ref. [Lau and Clerk (2018)]. Besides, the signal-to-noise ratio per photon is also enhanced by about one order of magnitude. This paper proposes a novel optimal gain design method for robust fault detection using set-valued observers. First, a new fault detection performance specification is proposed for set-valued observers based on a new notion named the excluding degree of the origin from a zonotope. Second, a fractional programming problem is formulated to describe fault detection optimality of set-valued observers. Third, optimal fault detection gains are obtained by solving the fractional programming problem. Finally, numerical examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Carbon neutrality goals are driving the increased use of renewable energy (RE). Large-scale use of RE requires accurate energy generation forecasts; optimized power dispatch, which minimizes costs while satisfying operational constraints; effective system control to ensure a stable power supply; and electricity markets that support bidding and trading decisions associated with RE. However, the uncertainties in RE generation make renewable power systems challenging to operate. For example, the intermittent nature of wind power can make it difficult to balance the supply and demand of electricity in real time; therefore, traditional power sources could be needed to meet the demand, which can increase electricity prices. This Review outlines the potential of artificial intelligence-based methods for supporting renewable power system operation. We discuss the ability of machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning methods to facilitate power system forecasts, dispatch, control and markets to support the use of RE. We also emphasize the applicability of these techniques to different operational problems. Finally, we discuss potential trends in renewable power system development and approaches to address the associated operational challenges such as the increasingly distributed nature of RE installations, diversification of energy storage systems and growing market complexity.

Inverse linear-quadratic discrete-time finite-horizon optimal control for indistinguishable homogeneous agents: a convex optimization approach

The inverse linear-quadratic optimal control problem is a system identification problem whose aim is to recover the quadratic cost function and hence the closed-loop system matrices based on observations of optimal trajectories. In this paper, the discrete-time, finite-horizon case is considered, where the agents are also assumed to be homogeneous and indistinguishable. The latter means that the agents all have the same dynamics and objective functions and the observations are in terms of "snap shots" of all agents at different time instants, but what is not known is "which agent moved where" for consecutive observations. This absence of linked optimal trajectories makes the problem challenging. We first show that this problem is globally identifiable. Then, for the case of noiseless observations, we show that the true cost matrix, and hence the closed-loop system matrices, can be recovered as the unique global optimal solution to a convex optimization problem. Next, for the case of noisy observations, we formulate an estimator as the unique global optimal solution to a modified convex optimization problem. Moreover, the statistical consistency of this estimator is shown. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by a number of numerical examples. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Convergence analysis of dual decomposition algorithm in distributed optimization: Asynchrony and inexactness

Dual decomposition is widely utilized in distributed optimization of multi-agent systems. In practice, the dual decomposition algorithm is desired to admit an asynchronous implementation due to imperfect communication, such as time delay and packet drop. In addition, computational errors also exist when individual agents solve their own subproblems. In this paper, we analyze the convergence of the dual decomposition algorithm in distributed optimization when both the asynchrony in communication and the inexactness in solving subproblems exist. We find that the interaction between asynchrony and inexactness slows down the convergence rate from O(1/k) to O(1/√k). Specifically, with a constant step size, the value of objective function converges to a neighborhood of the optimal value, and the solution converges to a neighborhood of the exact optimal solution. Moreover, the violation of the constraints diminishes in O(1/√k). Our result generalizes and unifies the existing ones that only consider either asynchrony or inexactness. This paper revisits the stabilization problem of switched linear systems with time-varying delay via state dependent switching strategies. In contrast to the existing works, the commonly adopted stable convex combination assumption is relaxed in this paper. For switched systems satisfying the relaxed assumption, we design a state dependent switching strategy, under which the considered system is asymptotically stable at the origin in the presence of time-varying delay. An optimization problem is formulated to estimate the upper bound of tolerable time delay. Numerical examples are presented to show that our method is applicable to a larger class of switched systems and leads to greater delay bound.

Spectral computed tomography based on a photon-counting detector (PCD) attracts more and more attentions since it has the capability to provide more accurate identification and quantitative analysis for biomedical materials. The limited number of photons within narrow energy bins leads to imaging results of low signal-noise ratio. The existing supervised deep reconstruction networks for CT reconstruction are difficult to address these challenges because it is usually impossible to acquire noise-free clinical images with clear structures as references. In this paper, we propose an iterative deep reconstruction network to synergize unsupervised method and data priors into a unified framework, named as Spectral2Spectral. Our Spectral2Spectral employs an unsupervised deep training strategy to obtain high-quality images from noisy data in an end-to-end fashion. The structural similarity prior within image-spectral domain is refined as a regularization term to further constrain the network training. The weights of neural network are automatically updated to capture image features and structures within the iterative process. Three large-scale preclinical datasets experiments demonstrate that the Spectral2spectral reconstructs better image quality than other the state-of-the-art methods. © 2022, CC0.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enhanced Wireless Localization: Phase Optimization for Malicious Interference Mitigation

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have merged as important enabling technologies for localization coverage extension and localization accuracy improvement under signal blockage and malicious interference conditions. However, most existing works assume known locations of jammers, which is generally impractical in real-world networks. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel RIS-enhanced wireless localization framework against malicious interference with the support of either narrowband or orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pilot signals. A two-stage anti-jamming localization approach is developed to first estimate the unknown channel and signal information of the jammer and then localize the user’s position by eliminating the jamming signal. More importantly, we utilize the full potential of RIS to improve localization accuracy by optimizing the phase shift profile during the iterative process. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the commendable performance of our proposed framework, which can not only mitigate the jamming effect but also achieve better localization accuracy, offering a good reference for future heterogeneous and complex wireless networks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Disturbance Attenuation via Nonlinear Feedback for Chemical Reaction Networks

This paper deals with the setpoint control of Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs) in the presence of disturbances. The addressed control problem is traced back to the output feedback-based stabilization of passive systems. First, the passivity properties of complex balanced CRNs are discussed. Second, it is shown that, by combining the kinetic feedback based control with the passivity theory-based output feedback approach, arbitrary disturbance attenuation in controlled CRNs can be achieved. A case study is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed control design approach.
