Human activity recognition is an important functionality in any intelligent system designed to support human daily activities. While majority of human activity recognition systems use supervised learning, these systems lack the ability to detect new activities by themselves. In this paper, we report the results of our investigation of unsupervised human activity detection with features extracted from skeleton data obtained from RGBD sensor. Unlike activity recognition, activity detection does not provide the label however attempts to distinguish one activity from another. This paper demonstrates a suitable set of features to be used with K-means clustering to distinguish different activities from a pool of unlabeled observations. The results show 100% F0.5-score were achieved for six out of nine activities for one of the subjects at low frame rate, while F0.5-score of 71.9% was achieved on average for all activities by four subjects.

This paper investigates variation of infinite horizon (IH) performance of Model Predictive control (MPC) without constraints as the optimization horizon changes. By exploring properties of the Difference Riccati Equations (DRE), an upper bound and a lower bound of the ratio between variation of IH performance of MPC and finite horizon (FH) optimal cost are obtained. The result shows the dynamic behavior of IH performance of closed-loop MPC systems as the optimization horizon varies. Copyright © 2013 IFAC.

The main point of this paper is to present a time domain strategy for drug dosage to treat psychiatric disorders. A time domain model of emotion is obtained from an extension of a recently developed fractional nonlinear dynamic model of happiness. First, the Fractional Optimal control law for incommensurate multi state systems is obtained. It will be then applied as an optimal drug administration procedure in the line of psychiatric disorders treatment. Results of this paper show that optimal control scheme is a proper approach to face the difficulties of analysis and control the incommensurate systems. It can be also clearly seen from the simulation results that this approach is very effective in the case that control methods are used as treatment techniques.

The increased penetration of renewable energy sources to the network highlights the necessity of constructing stochastic variants of the standard unit commitment and reserve scheduling problems. Earlier approaches to such problems are either restricted to ad-hoc methodologies (at the expense of a suboptimal solution), or lead to computationally intractable formulations. In this paper we provide a unified framework to deal with such planning problems for systems with uncertain generation, while providing a-priori probabilistic certificates for the robustness properties of the resulting solution. Our methodology is based on a mixture of randomized and robust optimization and leads to a tractable problem formulation. To illustrate the performance of the proposed methodology we apply it to the IEEE 30-bus network, and compare it by means of Monte Carlo simulations against an algorithm based on a deterministic variant of the unit commitment problem.

This paper deals with the problem of reserve scheduling for power systems with wind power generation, and proposes a new set-up that incorporates an AC Optimal Power Flow (AC OPF) formulation. The AC OPF problem is nonconvex and in general hard to solve. Here we propose an approach building on convex relaxations of the AC OPF problems and discuss a modification that we believe has certain advantages when combined with the reserve scheduling formulation. Numerical simulations suggest that the proposed relaxation technique results in a feasible solution for the exact problem. Using the proposed modification of the AC OPF problem, we focus on systems with uncertain generation and formulate a chance constrained optimization problem to determine the minimum cost of production and reserves. Due to the complex structure of the resulting problem, we use a heuristic procedure to solve it numerically. This is achieved following a sampling based methodology. The proposed algorithm is applied to the IEEE-30 bus network and is compared against its DC power flow counterpart by means of Monte Carlo simulations.

Simulator for smart wheelchairs is of great significance for both driver training and algorithm design. A development and simulation platform for wheelchairs is presented in this paper. On this platform, simulations of kinematics, dynamics and sensors are integrated, and a virtual prototype of wheelchair and virtual world are modled also. The sensors include encoders, a laser range finder and a set of Kinect. This platform is implemented in Gazebo and ROS, and is completely open source and freely available. Experiments verifies that this platform can be used as a valid tool for driver training and algorithm design. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Human interest input could greatly enhance the efficiency of the multi-robot exploration. However, most of the previous work did not take the intention of the operator into account. In this paper, a human interest oriented multi-robot exploration system is designed. The system is composed of a mobile base station and several robot explorers. A human interest oriented task allocation method is developed to enable these robot explorers to coordinate based on the operator's intention. Furthermore, an optimization index is proposed to balance the obedience, connectivity and explorability of the system; and the optimization problem is solved to generate the movements of the mobile base station and the robot explorers. Simulations and real-world experiments have demonstrate the effectiveness of the system and the efficiency of the exploration process.

A stabilized Distributed MPC for large scale system is proposed and its designation is given in this paper for improving the global performance of closed-loop system. To make the performance of closed-loop system more close to that using centralized MPC, each subsystem-based MPC added the cost of the entire system into its optimization cost function. In addition, a consistency constraint and dual mode strategy are designed and adopted. Provided an initially feasible solution can be found, subsequent feasibility of the algorithm is guaranteed at every update, and the asymptotic stabilization is established.

In this paper, we present a gain-scheduling distributed model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for polytopic uncertain systems subject to actuator saturation. A large-scale system is decomposed into subsystems and sub-controllers are designed independently. An invariant set condition is provided and a min-max distributed MPC strategy is proposed based on the invariant set. The distributed MPC controller is determined by solving a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization problem. An iterative algorithm is provided to coordinate the sub-controllers. A numerical example is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In this work, we propose a buffer-aided successive opportunistic relaying scheme that aims to improve the average capacity of the network when inter-relay interference arises between relays that are selected for transmission and reception. In order to exploit the benefits of buffering at the relays, we propose a relay-pair selection policy that decouples the receiving relay at the previous time slot from being the transmitting relay at the next slot. Furthermore, we impose an interference cancellation threshold allowing the relay that is selected for reception, to decode and subtract the inter-relay interference. The proposed relaying scheme selects the relaying pair that maximizes the average capacity of the relay network. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated via simulation and comparisons with other state-of-the-art half and full-duplex relay selection schemes, in terms of outage probability, average capacity and average delay. The results reveal the need for a tradeoff between improving the outage on the cost of reduced capacity and increased delay, and vice versa. Finally, conclusions are drawn and future directions are discussed, including the need for a hybrid scheme incorporating both half and full-duplex characteristics.
