Notes on Data-driven System Approaches

In this paper, we present several considerations centered around the data-driven system approaches. We briefly explore three main issues: the evolving relationship between off-line and on-line data processing methods, the complementary relationship between the data-driven and model-based methods, and the perspectives of data-driven system approaches. Instead of offering solutions to data-driven system problems, which is impossible at the present level of knowledge and research, in this article we aim at categorizing and classifying open problems, exploring possible directions that may offer alternatives or potentials for the four key fields of interests: control, decision making, scheduling, and fault diagnosis.

In this paper, two approaches to utilizing contextual information in semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. Both approaches make use of spatial context in the form of fuzzy directional relations. The first one is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is employed in order to decide upon the optimal semantic image interpretation by treating semantic image analysis as a global optimization problem. On the other hand, the second method follows a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) technique for estimating the optimal solution. Both spatial context techniques are evaluated with several different combinations of classifiers and low-level features, in order to demonstrate the improvements attained using spatial context in a number of different image analysis schemes.

Modelling of ultrasonic motor with dead-zone based on Hammerstein model structure

The ultrasonic motor (USM) possesses heavy nonlinearities which vary with driving conditions and load-dependent characteristics such as the dead-zone. In this paper, an identification method for the rotary travelling-wave type ultrasonic motor (RTWUSM) with dead-zone is proposed based on a modified Hammerstein model structure. The driving voltage contributing effect on the nonlinearities of the RTWUSM was transformed to the change of dynamic parameters against the driving voltage. The dead-zone of the RTWUSM is identified based upon the above transformation. Experiment results showed good agreement be- tween the output of the proposed model and actual measured output.

Optimal Formation Reconfiguration control of Multiple UCAVs Using Improved Particle Swarm Optimization

Optimal formation reconfiguration control of multiple Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicles （UCAVs） is a complicated global optimum problem. Particle Swarm Optimization （PSO） is a population based stochastic optimization technique inspired by social behaviour of bird flocking or fish schooling. PSO can achieve better results in a faster, cheaper way compared with other bio-inspired computational methods, and there are few parameters to adjust in PSO. In this paper, we propose an improved PSO model for solving the optimal formation reconfiguration control problem for multiple UCAVs. Firstly, the control Parameterization and Time Diseretization （CPTD） method is designed in detail. Then, the mutation strategy and a special mutation-escape operator are adopted in the improved PSO model to make particles explore the search space more efficiently. The proposed strategy can produce a large speed value dynamically according to the variation of the speed, which makes the algorithm explore the local and global minima thoroughly at the same time. Series experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in solving the optimal formation reconfiguration control problem for multiple UCAVs.

A system was developed able to retrieve specific documents from a document collection. In this system the query is given in text by the user and then transformed into image. Appropriate features were in order to capture the general shape of the query, and ignore details due to noise or different fonts. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our system, we used a collection of noisy documents and we compared our results with those of a commercial OCR package. © 2008 IADIS.

Document binarization is an active research area for many years. There are many difficulties associated with satisfactory binarization of document images and especially in cases of degraded historical documents. In this paper, we try to answer the question "how well an existing binarization algorithm can binarize a degraded document image?" We propose a new technique for the validation of document binarization algorithms. Our method is simple in its implementation and can be performed on any binarization algorithm since it doesn't require anything more than the binarization stage. Then we apply the proposed technique to 30 existing binarization algorithms. Experimental results and conclusions are presented. © 2008 IEEE.

Community Coordinated Multimedia (CCM) provides an extended and enhanced human experience by collaboratively consuming electronic and networked content and multimedia-intensive services. Community coordinated multimedia vision raises the challenges of multimedia content creation, interpretation, exchange, and consumption over a large range of heterogeneous services, terminals and networks. The development of CCM metamodel plays a key role in tackling these challenges by enabling the transparent multimedia aggregation and exchange crossing communities. This paper aims to design and develop the CCM metamodel. A generic terminology for CCM metamodeling is developed. A extensive study on metamodeling activities and metamodeling methodologies is presented. A combined metamodeling approach is proposed for the CCM metamodel development. Experiences and results on the CCM metamodeling and CCM metamodel-driven content annotation prototype are elaborated.

We develop a hybrid controller that drives a nonholonomic vehicle to the source of a radiation-like signal. The control signal depends only on measurements of the signal, which may be corrupted by noise, and internal states of the controller. The control strategy is inspired by a line minimization-based algorithm for unconstrained optimization of nonlinear functions without gradient information. We state the main properties of the algorithm and then discuss its implementation in a hybrid controller that coordinates the optimization algorithm with vehicle steering. We present semi-global practical convergence and stability results for the closed-loop system. These results are illustrated by simulation and experiment.

A family of hybrid control algorithms is developed that steer a nonholonomic autonomous vehicle to the source of a scalar signal present in the environment. In an idealized setting, we develop a general hybrid control scheme that globally asymptotically stabilizes the vehicle position about the source. Pursuing a practical implementation, a series of perturbations to the family of controllers is introduced, resulting in a semi-global practical stability of the vehicle position about the source. An example of a recently developed conjugate direction-based controller fitting into this family is developed and demonstrated by simulation and experiment.
