A test-bed for region-based image retrieval using multiple segmentation algorithms and the MPEG-7 eXperimentation model: The schema reference system

The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for contentbased semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. In this paper, recent advances in the development of the SCHEMA reference system are reported, focusing on the application of region-based image retrieval using automatic segmentation. More specifically, the first and the second version of the reference system are presented and the motivation behind the different approaches followed during the development of these two versions is discussed. Experimental results for both systems, using a common collection of images, are shown. Additionally, a comparative evaluation of the two versions both in terms of retrieval accuracy and in terms of time-efficiency is performed, allowing the evaluation of the system as a whole as well as the evaluation of the usability of different components integrated with the reference system, such as the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model. This illustrates the suitability of the SCHEMA reference system in serving as a test-bed for evaluating and comparing different algorithms and approaches pertaining to the content-based and semantic manipulation of visual information, ranging from segmentation algorithms to indexing features and methodologies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Using other agents' experiences and knowledge, a learning agent may learn faster, make fewer mistakes, and create some rides for unseen situations. These benefits will be gained if the learning agents know the area of expertise and the expertness values of each other. In this paper, some Q-learning agents with different skills and expertness levels cooperate in learning. The agents use some criteria to judge others information and knowledge. Four expertness criterion, certainty and entropy measures are used to assign degrees of importance to others' Q-Tables. Effects of measuring these values based on their whole Q-Table, a portion of Q-Tables that reflects their proficiencies, and the states in Q-Tables on the learning quality are studied. Simple strategy sharing and two different weighted strategy-sharing methods are used to combine the acquired knowledge from different agents.

In multiagent reinforcement learning, inter-agent credit assignment is a fundamental problem, since a single scalar reinforcement signal is the only reliable feedback that teams of learning agents receive. This problem is more critical in groups of independent learners with a joint task. In this research, it is assumed that a critic agent receives the environment feedback and assigns a proper credit to each agent using some measures. Three of such measures for a team of cooperative agents with a parallel and AND-type task are introduced. These measures somehow compare the agents' knowledge. One of these criteria, called normal expertness, is a non-relative measure while two other ones (certainty and relative normal expertness) are relative measure. It is experimentally shown that relative measures work better as they contain more information for the critic agent.

Growth in popularity of the Internet has spawned a great interest in collaborative IP networks that support collaborative meetings between individuals or groups located at remote stations. The emphasis on security of information transfer during these meetings has made the management of end-to-end security in collaborative IP network environments, that may involve the creation of ad hoc communication networks that contain the Internet as an intermediate network, an important research issue. Addition of security features through standard methods gives rise to complex incompatibility problems resulting from the specific routing and address translation schemes that may be in place in these networks. The development of enhanced protocols that remove this incompatibility and ensure interoperability between security functions and address translation functions is discussed in this paper. Detailed steps in ensuring end-to-end security in various cases involving change of IP address, change of both IP address and the port, and the use of encapsulation security payload implemented in transport mode are described. The enhanced protocols presented here support generic implementation in the sense that the implementation of the security-related protocol is transparent to the use or not of the address translation scheme. For providing a proof of concept demonstration of the proposed solutions, the structure of a prototype collaborative network, which employs the Internet as an intermediate communication medium for supporting videoconferencing between remote stations, is outlined. © 2001 IEEE.

In engineering application heuristics are widely used for discrete optimization *** report two cases (in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing and High Level Synthesis), where a recent "intelligent" heuristic (STAGE) performs excellently by learning a value-function of the states. An algorithm for adaptive feedforward cancellation (AFC) of high frequency measurable disturbances for a class of nonlinear dynamical systems is developed. A rectangular local linear model (RLLM) network is used to model nonlinear dynamical behaviour of the system and to predict the effect of the disturbances. Another network of the same kind containing local linear compensation units is used as a feedforward controller based on the prediction mentioned above. This scheme is appended with a feedback controller for the sake of better tracking performance. © 2001 EUCA.

The information capacity of wireless communication systems can be increased dramatically by employing multiple transmit and receive antennas [Foschini GJ, Gans MJ. Capacity of Multi-Antenna Gaussian Channels, Technical Memorandum, AT and T Bell Laboratories, 1995.] An effective approach to increasing data rate over wireless channels is to employ coding techniques appropriate to multiple transmit antennas, that is space-time coding. Space-time codes introduce temporal and spatial correlation into signals transmitted from different antennas, in order to provide diversity at the receiver, and coding gain over an uncoded system. The spatial-temporal structure of these codes can be exploited to further increase the capacity of wireless systems with a relatively simple receiver structure.
