The air layer between the interior finishes and the structure is used as piping and wiring space. In many cases, ceilings and dry-type double floors are commonly constructed in Japan. However, the effect of ceilings and dry-type double floors on the heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation performance has not yet quantitatively studied. Therefore, in this paper, the same ceiling and floor structures were constructed for concrete and CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) buildings, and the heavyweight floor impact sound was investigated. As results, it was confirmed that the reduction amount of the heavy-weight floor impact sound by the ceiling tended to be smaller in CLT building than in concrete building. However, the trends were similar. Due to the dry-type double floor structure, the heavy-weight floor impact sound level was increased in concrete building and decreased in CLT building at 63 Hz in the octave band center frequency band. Therefore, it can be said that the dry-type double floor structure can be used to improve the heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation performance in the CLT building. © INTER-NOISE 2021 .All right reserved.

This study attempted to investigate the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia-nitrogen (NH4-N), and total phosphorus (TP) from secondary treated domestic wastewater using algal photo-bioreactor. A semi-pilot plant was constructed and operated for 112 days under continuous flow conditions at Zenin wastewater treatment plant, Giza, Egypt (WWTP) which consists of an algal photo-bioreactor with an effective volume of 188 litters and a lamella settler. The removal of the studied parameters was studied at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations. A continuous illumination of the photo-bioreactor was maintained using sunlight in the morning and incandescent lamps at night. The best overall organic and nutrients removal efficiency was recorded at HRT of 16.1 hours. Artificial neural network (ANN) with a structure of 3-10-1 was used to predict the BOD, COD, TSS, NH4-N, and TP removal efficiencies. It was revealed that the ANN model adequately predicted the studied parameters removal efficiencies with r2 greater than 90%. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers. All rights reserved.

A model of the extent of wave driven overwash into fields of sea ice floes is proposed. The extent model builds on previous work modelling wave overwash of a single floe by regular waves by including irregular incoming waves and random floe fields. The model is validated against a laboratory experiment. It is then used to study the extent of wave overwash into marginal ice zones consisting of pancake and fragmented floe fields. The effects of wave conditions and floe geometry on predicted extents are investigated. Finally, the model is used to predict the wave overwash extent for the conditions observed during a winter (July) 2017 Antarctic voyage in which the sea surface was monitored by a stereo-camera system. Cities are developing due to population growth, socio-economic structure changes, technology and spatial interaction with its surroundings. 'Bagian Wilayah Kota (BWK) C' or so-called 'urban zone C' of Bandar Lampung municipality comprising districts of Sukarame, Tanjung Senang, and Way Halim is currently growing both internally and externally due to the development of Trans-Sumatera highway and Institute Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA). The dynamics of development and activities have caused a growing physical urban space, affecting the changes of urban structure directly. The current development in BWK C has been considered as unmanageable and potentially caused some problems in spatial plan in the future. To prevent the chaotic of spatial plan in the future, this study aims to identify the changes of urban structure in BWK C of Bandar Lampung municipality due to the internal and external development of its area. This study benefits in providing comprehensive standpoints about the process of urban structure changes based on urban activities so that city government could gain a systematic discourse of urban development which advantages in policymaking for spatial development in Bandar Lampung municipality in the future. This study conducted several analytical methods ranging from comparative analysis, spatial analysis, and hierarchical centrality index analysis. For data collection, this study applied secondary data survey and field work observation, using data from 2010 to 2016. The findings of this study reveal that the physical development in BWK C is getting compacted as its morphology changed from ribbon shaped city to octopus shaped city.

This paper introduces three case-based modules for teaching civil engineering students about decision making for sustainability. The purpose of these modules is to connect civil engineering design to recent advances in behavioral decision science. Students who recognize their own decision biases will be better able to manage their decisions and be better able to recognize how their designs influence stakeholder decisions in the future. The three case studies varied in design topic and behavioral decision science concepts, from land development (choice overload) to renewable energy (status quo bias) to wastewater infrastructure (risk aversion). The case-based modules were developed using structured interviews with engineering design teams from each of the case projects. Relevant concepts from behavioral decision science were identified while interviewing the engineering design teams. The developed modules were tested with over 280 undergraduate engineering students. Methods to evaluate learning include pre and post-module surveys and free-response questions. After the module, students were more likely to mention and articulate the role that humans' mental barriers, like choice overload, bounded rationality, and satisficing play in decision making for sustainability. They also recognized how tools like Envision can help reduce these cognitive biases. In addition to integrating diverse topics and disciplines into a unified and relevant teaching module, the intention is that other faculty can also use these cases. Slides (either one or two-day instruction), teaching notes, and grading rubrics are available for other instructors to download and use and can be found in the Center for Sustainable engineering repository. © American Society for engineering Education, 2018.

Building performance can be improved by investigating and evaluating previews of occupant behavior. Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is a design analysis method used to direct and evaluate the physical and social elements of inhabited buildings. In recent years, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing grants student dormitory building to several Indonesian universities. In 2017, Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA) Bandar Lampung Indonesia has been granted two of those student facilities. The building has been operated for three years. The student dormitory considered has one type of building that has a high capacity occupation. This research aims to measure user satisfaction and evaluate building facility and its implication to student learning effectively using the POE method, specifically human behavior aspects. During this time, POE is more focused on building physical behavior that includes energy and thermal aspects. In this study, the author tries to raise aspects of human behavior as an essential element supporting the sustainability of the building. The survey conducted using eight variables: territoriality, privacy, interaction, perception, crowdedness, adaptability, durability, and comfortability. This research focuses on measuring only female student dormitories. One hundred eighty-two respondents were involved in the survey. The result shows that the majority of respondents feel quite satisfied with all the variable measure. This finding can be a reference to improve the design consideration for future student dormitory design.

This study investigates the preferences and willingness of residents, including local and foreign residents, in the Bali metropolitan area to participate in various waste management initiatives aimed at promoting a circular bioeconomy. Bali, a major tourist center in the Global South, presents unique challenges and opportunities for sustainable waste management. Using a choice experiment framework, we explored preferences for managing paper, food, and garden waste through different scenarios. Scenario 1 focused on collecting and separating waste to support existing infrastructure, Scenario 2 emphasized source reduction and participation, and Scenario 3 integrated a comprehensive circular economy approach. The study reveals significant support for comprehensive waste management practices, with high marginal willingness to participate values for initiatives such as collecting and processing paper waste for energy conversion, independent composting of food waste, and community-based composting of garden waste. These findings highlight the importance of community engagement and tailored strategies in developing sustainable waste management programs. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to design effective circular bioeconomy policies that enhance local economic self-sufficiency and contribute to sustainable development goals. © 2025 The Authors

In this study, fabrication of mesoporous nanocellulose-hectorite-alginate bead (B-NcH) composites and their application for adsorption of MB from water was carried out. The synthesis of nanocellulose (NC) was conducted from mangosteen waste peel (Garcinia mangostana L.). Garcinia mangostana L. peel had 58.9 ± 0,41 % content of cellulose. NCs was successfully isolated using the acid hydrolysis method. NC from Garcinia mangostana L. peel had a diameter of 24.5 ± 0.2 nm and a length of 381.2 ± 10.4 nm. The superabsorbent was composed of nanocrystalline cellulose, mesoporous hectorite, and alginate. The functional group, phase, and morphology of composite was investigated. The composite with 5 % NC had excellent mechanical strength. The B-NcH5 showed a high adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB), reaching 98.64 % at an adsorbent dose of 30 mg for 90 min. The presence of hectorite can increase the adsorption ability compared to NCs-alginate. The equilibrium adsorption data followed the Freundlich isotherm;however, the kinetics of adsorption showed the usefulness of adopting the PSO kinetic model. The highest adsorption capacity of B-NcH5 for MB was determined to be 57.59 mg/g. For thermodynamic studies, it was revealed that the adsorption of MB on BNcH-5 is a spontaneous and endothermic process. The removal efficiency was observed in six consecutive cycles, indicating at the favorable reusability of this adsorbent. These results validate the potential use of this B-NcH5 adsorbent for water treatment applications. © 2024

Plastics pose a significant threat to the marine environment. Fishing nets and cables represent a significant portion of marine litter in the ocean. Once in the marine environment, fishing nets and cables undergo weathering, breaking down into micro and nano-size particles and leaching plastic additives, which negatively affect marine biota. This study aims to unravel the ecotoxicological impact of different concentrations of leachate obtained from fishing nets and cables in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis under long-term exposure. Biochemical biomarkers linked to antioxidant defense system, xenobiotic biotransformation, oxidative damage, genotoxicity, and neurotoxicity were evaluated in different mussel tissues. The chemical nature of the fishing nets and cables and the chemical composition released to leachate were assessed. The leachate severely affects the antioxidant and biotransformation systems in the mussels’ tissues. Following exposure to 1 mg/L of leachate, mussels' defenses were enhanced to prevent oxidative damage. In contrast, in mussels exposed to 10 and 100 mg/L of leachate, mussels' defenses failed to combat pro-oxidant molecules, resulting in genotoxicity and oxidative damage. PCA and WOE evaluation confirmed that mussels were significantly affected by the leachates being the hazard of the leachate concentrations 1 and 100 mg/L ranked as moderate, while 10 mg/L was major. © 2023, The Authors.
