Task-free functional connectivity in animal models provides an experimental framework to examine connectivity phenomena under controlled conditions and allows for comparisons with data modalities collected under invasive or terminal procedures. Currently, animal acquisitions are performed with varying protocols and analyses that hamper result comparison and integration. Here we introduce StandardRat, a consensus rat functional magnetic resonance imaging acquisition protocol tested across 20 centers. To develop this protocol with optimized acquisition and processing parameters, we initially aggregated 65 functional imaging datasets acquired from rats across 46 centers. We developed a reproducible pipeline for analyzing rat data acquired with diverse protocols and determined experimental and processing parameters associated with the robust detection of functional connectivity across centers. We show that the standardized protocol enhances biologically plausible functional connectivity patterns relative to previous acquisitions. The protocol and processing pipeline described here is openly shared with the neuroimaging community to promote interoperability and cooperation toward tackling the most important challenges in neuroscience.

Life Cycle Assessment applied to construction and demolition waste treatment: proposal of a Brazilian scenario

Important amounts of construction and demolition wastes (CDW) are currently generated in several countries. Considering the correct management of this kind of residue, and the search for its noblest use, several studies have focused on the environmental potential impacts from CDW management. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is often used to investigate the potential environmental impacts over the life cycle of a product, thus becoming an important tool to support decision-making. CDW recycling process produces coarse, fine and mix aggregate as outputs, characterizing a multifunctional process. But, how CDW's LCA should be run, considering a circular and more sustainable built environment? Thus, the objective of this work is to explore the basic premises in proposing a product system for the CDW recycling process in Brazil. For this, data available in the literature on the recycling process in Brazil and in other countries support the definition of the product system. The complexity of this management option is explored, considering how the use of the recycled materials interfere in the scope, objective, unit function and other modelling choices, as well as reliability of CDW studies. Finally, the datasets provided by Ecoinvent are examined in order to promote debate on data adaptation, followed by remarks on the most appropriate choices on allocation in the CDW LCA. The cut-off system modelling associated with the new perspective on the avoided burden approach is concluded by the authors to be the most suitable for this waste recycling multifunctional processes. Understanding system models is key. When no inventory adaptation is intended, available inventory datasets are more advisable to be used when performing end of life scenarios only, once burdens differ according to countries management scenarios, as well as life cycle inventory approaches.

High calcium fly ash geopolymer composite was prepared by incorporating short carbon fiber in the geopolymer matrix. The carbon fiber (CF) content was varied from 0 to 1%, the liquid to ash ratio was controlled at 0.5. The workability, mechanical and electrical properties of the geopolymer composites were examined. The result showed that the incorporation of 0.5%CF and above resulted in the ductile failure of specimen. The increasing CF content also resulted in decreasing workability and mechanical strength. The electrical resistivity was also reduced and was more stable to the curing age and temperature. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve of 60°C curing provided less peaks than that of 25°C.

Preliminary Study of Smart Regional Waste Recycling in Boyolali, Central Java, Indonesia

Based on its functional aspects, the area is divided into two, namely urban and rural areas. Problems related to solid waste are not spared from that areas. However, problem-solving solutions cannot be generalized between the two areas because of the different characteristics of the community. This study took place in Boyolali District, Central Java, consisting of 192 rural areas and 75 urban areas. Judging from the characteristics of the population, most people in rural areas do not consider the waste management system that is already important. The main reason is the mindset of the community and applicable waste retribution. Rural communities prefer to burn all their waste on their own land rather than having to pay for waste transportation or recycle their waste. Unlike the case with people in urban areas who have followed the pattern of solid waste management carried out by the government. In addition, there are several community groups in urban areas that have begun to actively recycle waste even its still use conventional technology. Therefore, the application of smart waste management, especially smart waste recycling were already applied in districts which closed to the capital region.

Teaching introductory transportation engineering subjects can be very challenging. These courses usually include diverse topics and can involve students from different background and interest levels. Keeping students engaged and focused requires changes in traditional delivery methods. It also requires the design of exercises that are especially targeted to address certain concepts. Game-aided pedagogy has been proposed to stimulate students' interest and increase the efficiency of their learning. Our research team developed multiple games that were designed to target different concepts in the transportation fields. These games deliver appropriate amount of information density and accessibility, and utilize multimedia and hypermedia contents. We have developed a novel gravity model to relate students learning to information density, ability of students to absorb knowledge, and difficulty of delivery, and have previously demonstrated the model with one of the games. In this paper, we expand and illustrate the use of the educational gravity model to assess and compare different games used in game-aided teaching. A description of two different games is included in this paper. Each game uses refined 3D vivid scenes to attract and stimulate students. Gameplay data collected include students' responses in each game level. Both games use clientserver architecture to interact with students and store their gameplay data to assess the students' learning outcomes. We capture the effectiveness of each game by calibrating the gravity factor in each model. Each game has a naturally different gravity factor that could be associated with the game's appeal and capability to transfer knowledge. We attempt to shed more light into this concept and the potential for its use in ranking and evaluating newly developed games in terms of their pedagogical value. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

The emergence of waste management technology innovation is able to inhibit the accumulation of waste in temporary collection sites and landfill. Innovations that have been developed in developed countries and summarized in the concept of 'Smart Waste Management' are still not able to be applied to cities in developing countries, such as Indonesia. This is because the technologies that already exist in Indonesia are still far behind by developed countries in the world. In addition to sophisticated technology, the understanding and behaviour of the community has also been more advanced in the field of waste management, which starts from the process of sorting waste in each household to the recycling process of waste to minimize the amount of waste entering the landfill. This study took place in the city of Semarang, Central Java where the area is an urban area with waste problems that must be addressed immediately. The lack of technology, especially the city-scale recycling technology makes land in the landfill increasingly unable to accommodate the production of waste that enters every day. Therefore, the aim of this study is to define the high level of application of the Smart Waste Recycling concept that has been carried out in Semarang City by utilizing the technology currently available.

Governments occupy a significant proportion of building stock and their associated annual water and energy costs can be substantive. Research has shown that significant reductions in energy and water consumption as well as carbon emissions can be achieved through retrofitting public buildings. However, in most countries the current retrofitting rate is very low due to a number of barriers, including a lack of supportive legislation, regulations, guidelines, industry capacity and financial mechanisms. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the barriers as well as the best international practices covering numerous aspects of public building retrofits. Among others, the most important barriers identified were a lack of consideration of the water-energy nexus, and the limited availability of effective financing mechanisms. With a particular focus on the Australian context, a strategic roadmap, as well as a number of recommendations, such as the use of revolving loan fund financing and energy performance procurement, have been developed that aim to foster a greater rate of implementation of energy and water retrofit projects for public buildings. Achievement of such an aim will not only reduce ongoing operational costs of public buildings, but also lower their environmental impact and generate new employment opportunities. © 2016

Summary Being the second-largest country in the Middle East, Iran has a long history of civilisation during which several dynasties have been overthrown and established and health-related structures have been reorganised. Iran has had the replacement of traditional practices with modern medical treatments, emergence of multiple pioneer scientists and physicians with great contributions to the advancement of science, environmental and ecological changes in addition to large-scale natural disasters, epidemics of multiple communicable diseases, and the shift towards non-communicable diseases in recent decades. Given the lessons learnt from political instabilities in the past centuries and the approaches undertaken to overcome health challenges at the time, Iran has emerged as it is today. Iran is now a country with a population exceeding 80 million, mainly inhabiting urban regions, and has an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, malignancies, mental disorders, substance abuse, and road injuries.

Many of the geotechnical problems currently addressed by designers and/or researchers, present complexities related with the scope of different states of stress and strain levels, in diverse points of the analyzed geotechnical structure. Similarly, some of these problems also show that some part in the geotechnical structure, especially when dealing with excavations, undergoes tensile stress paths. The global analysis of a structure tends to be complex, given the fact that the soil is a material that poses a variable behavior, sometimes erratic, and a low tensile and flexural strength. One of the current challenges of geomaterial engineering is to give the soil properties that it does not have or in which it has mechanical deficiencies, by the addition or inclusion of alternative materials. One of the most used techniques to reinforce the soil when subjected to tensional stress is called soil-nailing. This methodology is constituted by anchors that are responsible for the stabilization of slopes through steel bars fixed with cement grouts;whose interaction with the surrounding soil is produced throughout the length of the bar. However, other materials could accomplish the function of this set, such as epoxy resins, a polymeric material that is characterized among other things by having an acceptable mechanical behavior when subjected to diverse loads. Therefore, together with the soil they form a different alternative to the ordinary anchors soil-nailing type. In this article the behavior of a reconstituted kaolinitic soil and its interaction with a core of epoxy resin is analyzed, in order to determine quantitatively at a small scale the adherence in the interface of these materials and thus verify their capacity as eventual stabilization system. © 2016 ejge.
