“In June 2003
the scientific and medical communities at MIT Harvard University and its affiliated hospitals and the Whitehead Institute banded together as collaborating partners to form the Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute based in Cambridge MA. The Broad Institute established with initial funding from a $100 million philanthropic donation from the Los Angeles-based Broad family was primarily viewed as a marriage between the Whitehead Institute's Center for Genome Research (WICGR) and the Harvard Institute of Chemistry and Cell Biology (ICCB). Eli Broad founder and chairman of AIG SunAmerica Inc. explained “the purpose of the Broad Institute is to create a new type of research institute to build on the accomplishments of the human genome project and to move to clinical applications to both prevent and cure diseases.”
Every Thursday morning we meet with perhaps 20 faculty members and 100 other researchers to discuss what we're all doing and should be doing next. -David Altschuler
This paragraph was written five years ago when the Broad Institute was in its very earliest days as a life science research community (McCarthy 2005). Since that time “the Broad” as it's known has kept true to Eli Broad's vision having attracted a talented group of researchers faculty trainees and professional staff. This 1600 person research community known internally as “Broadies” includes faculty staff and students from throughout the MIT and Harvard biomedical research communities and beyond with collaborations spanning over a hundred private and public institutions in more than 40 countries worldwide.
“What is special about the Broad is that we have people from Harvard MIT and the Harvard hospitals come together and work on problems of shared interest that could not be solved in their own individuals labs” explains David Altshuler M.D. Ph.D. Deputy Director and one of the Broad's six core faculty members. “These problems require expertise beyond any one principal investigator and in

This project includes the reconstruction of three taxi lanes within the Terminal Aprons at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA). The first taxi lane was located adjacent to 15 gates at the T Concourse, the second taxi lane was adjacent to 17 gates on the west side on Concourse A, and the third taxi lane was adjacent to nine gates on the east side of Concourse B, as shown in Figure 1. Several pavement design issues were addressed during the reconstruction of these jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) sections, including joint spacing, joint integration with the remaining JPCP sections, improvements to existing subsurface drainage systems, and the required load carrying capacity for several gates that support widebody aircraft. A detailed construction phasing plan was also developed as part of the design. This paper also addresses the success of the accelerated construction that was required during each phase. The results from laboratory testing for flexural strength, as required by the FAA, were compared to additional nondestructive seismic and maturity meter tests to determine when the gates could be opened to traffic.

3M PFSA ionomer membranes were doped with heteropolyacids (HPA) and the ionomer/HPA interaction characterized by attenuated total reflection FTIR, pulse field gradient spin echo NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering. The HPA doping was achieved by casting a solution containing both components. Three Keggin-type HPAs were used in this work: 12-phosphotungstic acid, 12-silicotungstic acid, and 12-zincotungstic acid, at doping concentrations of 1 and 5 wt %, respectively. FTIR spectra of the composite membranes clearly show the presence of the HPA and evidence for different interactions under different hydration states. Proton diffusion coefficients were determined by PFGSE NMR under dry and 100 % RH from ambient to 130°C. SAXS patterns of the control PFSA and the HPA-doped PFSA membranes were recorded under dry and wet conditions. Scattering behaviour for different samples and conditions are remarkably different, consistent with the incorporation of HPA and the swelling of ionomer clusters under hydration. copyright The Electrochemical Society.

This paper proposes a new approach to representing structural system inspired by various models of complex systems. Several types of generative representations of steel structural systems are provided and empirically investigated. These representations utilize various kinds of cellular automata to generate design concepts of steel structures in tall buildings. In the paper, a brief overview of the state-of-the-art in cellular automata and generative design is presented. Next, several types of generative representations of steel structural systems in tall buildings are described. The paper also reports the results of several design experiments. They have shown that generative representations produce novel structural shaping patterns which are qualitatively different than the patterns obtained using traditionally used parameterized representations. They also significantly improve the performance of evolutionary algorithms optimizing the structural systems. Finally, research conclusions are presented and most promising paths of future research are discussed.

MMA modified polymer mortar (MMPM), in which MMA was added to the unsaturated polyester resin, was developed for improving the development of early-age strength and the adhesive strength, of the existent polymer mortar using the polyester resin. To do this,MMPM was produced by mixing the polyester resin and the MMA monomer with the various weight ratios of 9:1,4:1,2. 5:1, 1. 5:1,1:0,1:1, and then its compressive and flexural strengths were tested. The early-age strength developments for the compressive and flexural strengths of the MMPM were turned out to be better than that of polyester resin mortar. Especially, when the content of MMA was in the range of 40%, the early-age strength development was predominant:strength at 3(6) hour showed about 60 (80)% of strength at 7 day. The flexural adhesive strength of MMPM was larger than that of polyester resin mortar. The results of experiment showed that the increasing effects of early-age strength development and adhesive strengths were apparently modified by mixing the MMA.
