Controlled diesel-mixed soils for roadway embankments: laboratory and ultrasonic characterization

Soils contaminated with hydrocarbons is a repetitive site condition that may occur at locations adjacent to underground fuel tanks and other facilities. The main purpose of this study is to characterize and assess possibilities of reusing contaminated soil in useful applications such as roadway embankments. Accordingly, controlled amounts of diesel were mixed with clays and sands using percentages ranging from 0 to 13.5%. Unconfined compression, direct shear, California bearing ratio, and other tests were conducted on the diesel-mixed soil, along with the ultrasonic test. The ultrasonic test provided measures for the pulse wave velocity and received frequency, which was correlated with other soil parameters such as elastic modulus, resilient modulus, and California bearing ratio. From the main outcomes, it was found that small amounts of diesel can help improved soil shear strength. For instance, adding 5% diesel increased the soil cohesion by 63% and the unconfined compressive strength from 0.14 to 0.21 N/mm2. In sands, the California bearing ratio increased by almost double by adding 5% diesel, which is essential for roadway embankments especially in remote locations. Damping coefficient of soil was determined at different levels of diesel using the ultrasonic wave decay envelops. The ultrasonic waves were analyzed using fast Fourier transform to determine useful correlations between the wave frequency and the diesel content starting from 0 to 13.5%, and it was realized that an uncomplicated ultrasonic test can be acceptably used to assess static and dynamic properties of clean as well as contaminated soils.

Upgrading historical structures is one of the most interesting applications of fiber reinforced polymers in construction. Historical bridges are frequently post-strengthened to increase load carrying capacity of structural elements, aiming to bear heavier commercial traffic. Fatigue life becomes crucial since the lack of available fatigue models leads to superficial analysis considering the same S–N curves for different strengthening systems and steel stress ranges. This paper uses an extensive database with experimental data from the literature to adjust linear regression models to characterize the large scatter between the results of fatigue tests from different sources. Distinct fatigue models have been developed considering three categories: externally bonded reinforcement with strips/sheets and new surface-mounted reinforcement. The different declivities found for the adjusted fatigue life models accurately represent the fatigue behavior of the post-strengthened structural elements with the assessed systems and techniques. Assessing the mass-culture system and proximate content of Arthrospira maxima local for biogas and biohydrogen productions

Arthrospira maxima is a type of local cyanobacteria that has shown success in being grown massively in Indonesia. This research is aimed at looking at the resilience and ability to grow in outdoor conditions using cheap media and following environmental patterns in terms of temperature, sunlight and aeration. In specific purpose is utilization of the obtained biomass for biogas or biohydrogen production. Also, media optimization research from chemical pour grade analyzes into commercial types has been carried out at laboratory scale and field scale. The results show that at the scaling up process from laboratorial to outdoor condition the amount of biomass ratio has decreased by 2–10%, whereas proximate of protein has decreased from 46% to 38%, in contrast starch tends to increase from 10% to 23% and lipid was increase from around 9%–12%. Freshwater and marine water basic media also showing difference in ratio of biomass production and main proximate. The total calory and protein seems higher if A. maxima cultivate using marine water. Cultivation time outdoors turns out to be faster growth when compared to controlled conditions indoors. Biomass analysis results show that the largest content is protein, followed by carbohydrates and lipid. Considering the composition of the proximate, the cyanobacteria biomass tends to be used for biogas conversion rather than alcohol, due to the high protein with less carbohydrate content. Moreover, Arthrospira is cyanobacteria which is capable for producing heterocyst cells that can be excite gas. It was found the cyanobacteria release hydrogen gas around 54 μL/g wet biomasses/day mature culture. However, it should be remembered that this strain is still original or wild type, and can still be developed using both environmental and molecular manipulation approaches. Floods occur every year and threaten communities worldwide. Indonesia is among the countries faced with this problem and still struggling to seek practical solutions to date. Further, as the country’s centers of trade, business, and technology, the island of Java cannot even perform better in dealing with floods. To further understand possible damage and losses, this research investigated structural mitigation measures as part of flood management in the Pepe River, notably river channelization to increase hydraulic efficiency. For the analysis, it used HEC-RAS to observe the river capacity. Existing conditions revealed that the river could not accommodate the predicted floods based on the return periods derived from the synthetic unit hydrograph of Nakayasu. However, after running the mitigation scenario wherein hydraulic modification was applied, flood risk could be reduced by lowering the river water level. Based on the results, it can be concluded that Indonesia needs to pay more attention to other aspects: ecology, green infrastructure, and water governance, to achieve more effective flood mitigation measures because structural mitigation only provides a temporary solution. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The development of artificial intelligence technology has driven the emergence of various innovations in human-machine interaction, one of which is the chatbot. A chatbot is software that can interact with humans through text or voice, creating the impression that they are communicating with real people. Currently, chatbots are very popular. This chatbot was developed as a collaboration between the team from Soegijapranata Catholic University as part of the Higher Education Community and KRS BP2P Java III within the Kedaireka Matching Fund platform. The chatbot that has been developed aims to provide information services related to the process of building self-built housing. The KRS BP2P Java III chatbot makes it easier for the community to enhance their understanding of self-reliance in fulfilling the need for decent housing. © 2024 IEEE.

Structural performance of reinforced concrete beams subjected to combined effects of corrosion and cyclic loading

The deleterious effects of steel rebar corrosion in bridges and viaducts can be potentialized by the cyclic loading to which such structures are naturally exposed. While cyclic loading may lead to progressive bond deterioration and concrete cover cracking, corroded steel rebars may accelerate the fatigue damage accumulation in reinforced concrete elements. Thus, the combined effects of corrosion and fatigue are still more damaging than the disassociated degradation processes. Under this perspective, the experimental program presented in this paper evaluates the synergy between corrosion and fatigue through the load-bearing capacity, vertical displacements at midspan, failure mode, cracking, and fatigue life of corroded reinforced concrete beams submitted to cyclic loading. Corroded reinforced concrete beams (120 × 200 × 1500mm, 2φ12.5 mm, φ 6.3 mm each 100 mm at midspan and 60 mm at shear span) were submitted to 2 million loading cycles (5 Hz) and tested up to failure under a four-point bending scheme. The steel rebar corrosion was accelerated by immersion corrosion testing up to 3–5% (low level) and 8–11% (high level) mass loss. The isolated effects of fatigue and low-level corrosion (3–5%) did not influence the load-bearing capacity and ductility of the reinforced concrete beams, unlike beams submitted to high corrosion levels. The fatigue loading did not influence the load-bearing capacity and ductility of the reinforced concrete beams submitted to low corrosion levels but increased the crack opening, reduced the ultimate load by about 10%, and reduced the ductility of the beams submitted to high corrosion levels. The failure mode changed from ductile to brittle in reinforced concrete beams submitted to high corrosion levels. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In recent years, research has been conducted to establish a method for quickly and appropriately determining damage to buildings during an earthquake using sensors, and it’s useful to appropriately evaluate the maximum and residual displacement during an earthquake. The purpose of this study is to propose a disaster assessment method using a satellite positioning system that directly measures the response displacement of a building from satellite positioning information. In this paper, the positioning accuracy is verified when calculating the relative displacement using two movable vibration tables that assume the top floor of a building and the ground surface under earthquake. © 2024 Architectural Institute of Japan. In Bali, the high volume of tourists significantly contributes to marine debris, particularly plastics, which threatens the ecological health of beaches and marine life, impacting both tourism and local livelihoods. Effective management is crucial to preserve Bali's natural beauty and sustainability. This study explores the factors influencing the willingness to participate (WTP) in marine debris management among urban communities in the Bali metropolitan area, Indonesia. Utilizing a binary logistic regression model, we examine the impact of key elements for effective marine debris management, risk awareness, learning performance, and higher monthly income and geographic differences between inland and coastal communities. The findings reveal that effective management practices significantly enhance community participation, highlighting the importance of transparency, accountability, and well-organized efforts. Educational initiatives also play a crucial role, with performance in risk awareness and learning showing a marginally significant positive effect on WTP. Conversely, higher income levels negatively influence participation, suggesting a preference for institutional funding over personal contributions. Geographic differences indicate that coastal communities are more inclined to participate than inland communities. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and practitioners in developing strategies to mobilize volunteers, enhance urban resilience, and promote social well-being. By implementing effective management practices, comprehensive educational programs, tailored engagement strategies, and fostering partnerships, urban communities in Bali can become more resilient and actively address environmental challenges. © 2024 The Authors

In 2022, there are 1,524 flood events out of a total of 3,531 disasters occurring in Indonesia. East Kalimantan Province ranked 20th among the 35 provinces in Indonesia with 28 flood occurrences in 2022, resulting in two fatalities. This highlights the urgent need for addressing flood hazard to prevent future casualties. There are some methods that can be used to determine the flood hazard in a region. In this research aims to identify flood-prone areas in East Kalimantan Province and evaluate the effectiveness of different mapping methods. The methodology that compares are the Pairwise Comparison method and Geomorphic Flood Index (GFI). The study's results provide flood-prone area maps of East Kalimantan Province using both methods, recommend the more efficient method for flood-prone area identification, and offer mitigation strategies based on the findings. This research is intended to serve as a reference for selecting the best method for identifying flood-prone areas and for informing policy decisions to mitigate flood impacts in East Kalimantan Province. © Author(s) 2025.

As the end-users increasingly can provide flexibility to the power system, it is important to consider how this flexibility can be activated as a resource for the grid. Electricity network tariffs is one option that can be used to activate this flexibility. Therefore, by designing efficient grid tariffs, it might be possible to reduce the total costs in the power system by incentivizing a change in consumption patterns. This paper provides a methodology for optimal grid tariff design under decentralized decision-making and uncertainty in demand, power prices, and renewable generation. A bilevel model is formulated to adequately describe the interaction between the end-users and a distribution system operator. In addition, a centralized decision-making model is provided for benchmarking purposes. The bilevel model is reformulated as a mixed-integer linear problem solvable by branch-and-cut techniques. Results based on both deterministic and stochastic settings are presented and discussed. The findings suggest how electricity grid tariffs should be designed to provide an efficient price signal for reducing aggregate network peaks.
