Discrete element method (DEM) was used to study sand-structure interaction. The effect of modeling parameters on formation of shear zones in structure-medium interfaces was also discussed. The results showed that the shear zone thickness increases as the surface roughness increases. Also, the shape of the shear zone shows greater curvature and undulations with the increase in degree of structure surface roughness.
Sustainability is emerging as a guiding paradigm to create a new kind of built environment: one that meets the needs of humans in the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own ne...

In spite of increasing infrastructure preservation and improvement needs, limited agency budgets, and public resistance to new construction, civil engineering education focuses almost exclusively on teaching students to design new facilities. Analytical ability and knowledge of design standards and approaches are necessary but not sufficient tools for managing civil infrastructure in the 21st century. Students must learn to integrate this traditional civil engineering knowledge base with an understanding of deterioration science, economics, finance, decision and management theory, maintenance management, and public policy. This paper describes efforts to address this gap in civil engineering education. The authors began with a single course at Carnegie Mellon University and have modified the original material in different ways to serve the needs at other institutions.

In this paper, a methodology and guidelines for applying risk methods in design and operation of maritime systems were developed and demonstrated using a case study of marine diesel generators. The methodology consists of several modules that include system definition based on functional and performance requirements, definition of dependencies among subsystems, data collection and reduction, reliability and risk analyses, and results reduction for use in decision analysis. The methodology was used to assess and analyze typical service diesel generators found onboard ships. The analysis included the generation of cut sets for the overall reliability of the system. The most likely failure scenarios were determined by demonstration as the failure of fuel supply components. The results are consistent with previous findings of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The assessment of the reciprocal impacts of infrastructure investments and their socio-economic environment requires that a number of such aspects be simultaneously considered. Some of those aspects, however, have not been traditionally incorporated in such assessments due (in part) to the limitations inherent in the techniques utilized in current practice. This paper presents a conceptual framework for the use of dynamic simulation in the assessment of packages of infrastructure investments. The concepts are then applied to case studies involving the evaluation of coordinated sets of infrastructure projects in rural areas.
