A myriad of materials, ranging from soft sensors to bone substitutes, undergo torsional loading throughout their operational lifespan, often produced using additive manufacturing (AM) technology due to its broad applicability. Understanding the torsional behavior of these AM components is paramount prior to their utilization. However, research concerning the torsional behavior of solid additively-manufactured resin polymers remains limited. To bridge this gap, 48 torsion specimens were fabricated using vat photopolymerization (VPP) with AnyCubic UV Tough Resin. These specimens varied in gage lengths (20, 40, 60, and 80 mm) and were subjected to five UV post-curing durations (0, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes). Monotonic torsion was applied until failure at a rate of 0.1 revolutions per minute, revealing ductile failure patterns across specimens. Longer post-curing times correlated with increased torsional capacities and shear moduli, although conclusions regarding energy absorption per unit volume remained inconclusive. Additionally, a normalized trilinear model was proposed to characterize the behavior of additively-manufactured resin polymers under monotonic torsion, facilitating numerical simulation of material responses in finite element software. © 2024, The Authors. Many barriers obstruct green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) implementation, particularly in residential areas where it primarily relies on voluntary buy-in. Thus, it is necessary to determine the most effective mitigation strategies and raise attention to them. This paper considers cognitive biases in decision-making to quantitatively simulate their influence on GSI adoption behaviors in residential areas. The overall goal is to model the adoption of GSI measures in residential areas by incorporating the cognitive biases of residential-based adopters. The methods include agent-based modeling with the model framed by the theory of planned behavior. Data used in the model included survey data collected from participants who reside in the study area and values from the literature. The results show that cognitive biases, when both status quo and loss aversion biases are present, could significantly limit adoption, especially when the initial adopters are sparse. Overall, the main contribution of this work is to provide insights into how cognitive biases may impact long-term GSI implementation planning. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Last Planner® System (LPS) of Production Control is widely acknowledged as fit to tackle the complexity of construction projects. However, the implications of complexity in the implementation of LPS itself have not been investigated. Those implications are investigated in this paper by exploring the gap between production planning and control-as-imagined and as-done at the look-ahead level. For that purpose, a case study was conducted in the refurbishment of a department store in which the LPS was implemented. Data collection involved document analysis, participant observation at the look-ahead and short-term planning meetings, and unstructured interviews. The Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) was used for modeling variability and interactions between the managerial functions at the look-ahead planning level. Results indicated several differences between production planning and control-as-imagined and as-done, which reflect hidden activities required for the removal of constraints. These activities took time and effort from managers and therefore they can partly explain why the LPS was not strictly followed as-imagined in theory. © Prof. Luis F. Alarcón and Assoc. 3D printing techniques have recently received a lot of attention as a new technique for forming construction materials, due to benefits over the traditional cast. In this research, ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste was formed using a 3D extruder. Optimized mixture and printing parameters were determined. Compressive strengths of the printed and the traditionally casted OPC paste were measured after the specimens were cured in saturated limewater for 7, 14 and 28 days, respectively. The result led to the conclusion that the most suitable mixture for printing was achieved at the water to cement ratio of 0.35 with water reducing and retarding admixture added. The optimum printing parameters were the printing speed of 60 mm/min and the feed rate of 120 ml/s. Compressive strength of the 5 x 5 x 5 cm3 hollowed and filled cubic printed specimens, were compared with casted cement paste. The strengths of both the printed and the casted specimens were higher with longer curing durations. The highest levels of strength were achieved at 12.36 MPa on the printed specimens and 80.88 MPa when testing the casted samples. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Analysis of Farm Pond Detention and Disaster Prevention Potential and Activation Improvement Strategy

Given the increasing rate of climate change in recent years, this study investigated the flood detention capacity of traditional farm ponds. The HEC-HMS model was used to evaluate the farm ponds in the water catchment areas of Neili, Lunshan, Dapo, and the Anyexi and Chaoyong Rivers. The investigation also cooperated with detailed survey operations to screen 76 farm ponds for flood detention potential and to estimate their inflow. The peak reduction rate in the 50-year return period was determined to be 83%, and the peak delay time was determined to be 27%. The peak reduction rate has increased significantly, indicating that farm ponds offer considerable potential for flood detention and disaster prevention. They can be regarded as a possible solution for the general dispersal of flood runoff and for reducing the impact of future natural disasters. © 2022 Chinese Soil and Water Conservation Society. Climate change has affected the whole world and caused disasters, include drought. Since Tana Mbanas village in Central Sumba District is the driest remote area in eastern region of Indonesia, gender inequality has affected in daily life of people in the village instead of other social and environmental problems. This research aimed to evaluate how gender mainstreaming implemented in drought disaster risk reduction in Tana Mbanas village in Central Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The result of the research is expected to become a mirror that reflects Sumba island gender and development issues. The research took place in Tana Mbanas village in Central Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, and conducted by qualitative method with purposive data sampling. The steps taken in the research were observation, data collecting by questionnaire and in-depth interview to respondents, and literature review. It was reported that Tana Mbanas village people has given water management assistance by village fund, conducting water management counselling, saving water, and harvesting rain systems in every household. This research meets conclusions that: (1) Several programs and planned actions in water supply system and infrastructure development have become initiatives of government agencies of village authorities, BPBD and Public Work Agency of Central Sumba Regency;(2) People demonstrated vulnerability to drought as well as lack of water supply and also water resources;(3) Strong efforts should be conducted to educate people and increase women capacity in coping issues of poverty, drought, and lack of water supply;and (4) Government agencies and other private institutions have to build women capacity as their participation in enhancing gender equality and mainstreaming gender. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The applied element method (AEM) can comprehensively analyze structural behavior from initial loading to complete collapse with simple material models. However, AEM research predominantly centers on structures, with limited exploration in the soil-structure interaction (SSI) context. Therefore, in this paper, essential upgrades have been integrated into AEM to analyze SSI effects. These upgrades include boundary conditions, damping, material models, and failure criteria. Boundary conditions, including Free-H (Horizontal) with viscous damping boundaries, are crucial to analyzing the SSI effect. Rayleigh damping is employed to capture the dynamic response of the structure-soil system. The choice of material model is pivotal;the Hardin-Drnevich (HD) model is used to characterize soil behavior. Mohr Column failure criteria are integrated to predict soil failure. After incorporating these improvements, a verification process is conducted, including verification for fixed-based structures, boundary conditions, soil site response analysis, and the SSI. The results of the verification process ensure the model's ability to analyze SSI effectively. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Monotonic Torsion of Vat Photopolymerized Tough Resin Polymers: The Effects of Gage Length and Ultraviolet Post-Curing

Numerous materials, including soft sensors, microgrippers, metamaterials, bone substitutes, photopolymers, and functionally graded materials, undergo torsional loading throughout their service life. With the widespread adoption of additive manufacturing technology across various fields, many of the foregoing components are fabricated using additive manufacturing technology. Hence, it is essential to characterize the torsional behavior of additively-manufactured components before using them. More importantly, studies on additively-manufactured resin polymers are scarce, if any. To this end, the vat photopolymerization (VPP) technique was employed to fabricate 48 torsion specimens. These specimens were additively manufactured from the AnyCubic ultraviolet (UV) Tough Resin Material in a vertical build orientation. The study involved four different gage lengths: 20, 40, 60, and 80 mm. Additionally, five UV post-curing times (0, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes) were considered as variables. Monotonic torsion was applied to the specimens at a rate of 0.1 revolutions per minute until failure. The results revealed that the failure patterns of all specimens were ductile. It was observed that longer post-curing times correlated with increased torsional capacities and shear moduli. However, no definitive conclusion could be drawn regarding the energy absorption per unit volume of the specimens. Furthermore, a normalized trilinear model was proposed to characterize the behavior of additively-manufactured resin polymers under monotonic torsion. This model is applicable for finite element software, enabling numerical simulation of the material’s response. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Distributed Certifiably Correct Range-Aided SLAM

Reliable simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms are necessary for safety-critical autonomous navigation. In the communication-constrained multi-agent setting, navigation systems increasingly use point-to-point range sensors as they afford measurements with low bandwidth requirements and known data association. The state estimation problem for these systems takes the form of range-aided (RA) SLAM. However, distributed algorithms for solving the RA-SLAM problem lack formal guarantees on the quality of the returned estimate. To this end, we present the first distributed algorithm for RA-SLAM that can efficiently recover certifiably globally optimal solutions. Our algorithm, distributed certifiably correct RA-SLAM (DCORA), achieves this via the Riemannian Staircase method, where computational procedures developed for distributed certifiably correct pose graph optimization are generalized to the RA-SLAM problem. We demonstrate DCORA’s efficacy on real-world multi-agent datasets by achieving absolute trajectory errors comparable to those of a state-of-the-art centralized certifiably correct RA-SLAM algorithm. Additionally, we perform a parametric study on the structure of the RA-SLAM problem using synthetic data, revealing how common parameters affect DCORA’s performance. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Transportation infrastructure is essential to a nation's everyday life and economic activity. Accordingly, pavement design and engineering are imperative to ensure safe, comfortable, and efficient transportation of goods, services, and people across countries. Pavements should be designed to be adaptable to changing traffic inputs and environmental conditions and always strive to fulfill the requirements of the end-users, including safety, durability, comfort, efficiency, sustainability, and cost. This review highlights innovations in paving technologies with a focus on sustainability from a socio-technical perspective;the scope is meant to be comprehensive but not exhaustive. The discussion categorizes paving design and technology innovations into two high-level sections: 1) high-volume urban pavement innovations and 2) low-volume rural pavement innovations. © 2024, The Authors.
