This research delves into the complex factors that affect how ready a community is to embrace new environmental development strategies, which could significantly change the region's social and economic fabric. Using a structured questionnaire, exploratory factor analysis and logistic regression analysis, the study assesses how corporate practices in resource management, environmental governance, efforts to enhance community capabilities, and various demographic factors influence the community's willingness to adapt to change. Despite its intentions to benefit both the mining operations and the community, corporate resource management appears to have a paradoxical impact on the community's willingness to pursue new environmental paths. This negative impact can be attributed to the dependency it creates. Effective corporate resource management can lead to a community becoming heavily reliant on the stability and benefits provided by the mining company. This dependency fosters a sense of security and satisfaction with the status quo, making community members less inclined to explore or support new and potentially disruptive environmental strategies. The stability provided by the mine's resource management practices may inadvertently anchor the community to existing economic structures, reducing their impetus to seek alternative livelihoods or adapt to new socioeconomic conditions. However, it is essential to consider the limitations of this finding. One limitation is the potential bias in community perceptions, where immediate benefits from corporate resource management overshadow long-term considerations for sustainable development. Additionally, the context-specific nature of this study means that these findings may not be universally applicable to all mining communities. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This research was to study the effect of the environment condition during image captured including temperature and relative humidity in the packaging house of the mango exporting factory and in the orchard on the emissivity of mango fruit. The result showed that in the controlled environment of the packaging house in factory, the emissivity was increased (the mango emitted more energy) when the surface temperature was lower and the emissivity of mango is 0.71-0.84 and in the uncontrolled environment of open-air packaging yard in the mango orchard, the different transpiration rates of mango effected mainly by ambient temperature and relative humidity make the morning condition emissivity of 0.44-0.66 and the afternoon condition of 0.72-0.98. There was the effect of the different measured positions on the fruits where the physiology was different and the fluctuated environment in the latter condition made the wide range of emissivity of mangoes. This indicated the shortcoming of thermal imaging of horticultural product if the correct emissivity varied and difficult to set in the thermal camera setting, hence the inaccurate thermogram to be obtained.

Steel production is considered one of the most material and energy-consuming industries, and using less energy is considered vital to promote environmental sustainability. Steel is used as the main building material in the construction of factories, hangars, and workshops in the form of trusses. A truss system is a set of structural elements connected at pin joints , with different types, shapes, and weights. Optimizing truss systems for max strength and minimum weight is a sustainable approach to reducing steel production and promoting environmental sustainability. In this paper 27 Pratt trusses were optimized by trial and error using finite element analysis (FEM) to predict the optimum topology for various cross-sections. Correlations between the span length, cross-sectional area, and height of the trusses were developed to conclude the ideal topology of the Pratt truss that gives minimum compression and tension stresses. The effect of topology on the reaction forces was also addressed. Results showed that the optimum horizontal span length between joints ranged between 3.4 and 3.6 m for minimal compressive stresses and minimum horizontal and vertical reaction forces at supports, and from 3.0 to 3.6 m for minimal tensile stresses .

Technological improvement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and computer vision algorithms, such as Structured-from-Motion (SfM) and Multi-view Stereo (MVS) have provided the possibility for high-resolution mapping and high-density point cloud generation using low-cost equipment and sensors. Orthomosaics and Digital Terrain Model (DTM) are the main digital products considering mapping purposes. Their quality is directly related to the sensors boarded on the UAV and data processing. Ground Control Points (GCPs) are used in the process of indirect georeferencing and also to model the lens distortions. The number of GCPs used in this process affects the positional accuracy of the final products. This study aims to determine the optimum number of GCPs to achieve high accuracy orthomosaics and DTM. To obtain this optimum number, an area of 3.85ha was mapped with a low-cost UAV DJI Phantom 4 Advanced at 31m flying height, lateral and longitudinal overlap of 90% and 80%, respectively, and using 22 checkpoints for quality assessment. For the experiments, different configuration were used both for the number of GCPs and for the use of self-calibration process or pre-calibrated camera IOP (Interior Orientation Parameters). The results show that for the flight configuration used in this work and for the mentioned UAV, a total of 5 GCPs, with pre-calibrated camera IOP, yields an accuracy of 0.023m for X, 0.031m for Y and 0.033m for Z. © 2020 Copernicus GmbH. Fecal sludge-based refuse-derived fuel pelletizing process: Effect on hardness, density, and calorific value

Refused-derived fuel (RDF) has been considered as a sustainable alternative for substituting fossil fuels. Fecal sludge is produced daily from sewage treatment plants in large volumes and usually ends in sludge hangars for disposal, as the residue from chemical and biological treatment of human waste. Despite its large volume and low water content, the utilization of fecal sludge as RDF has not been widely practiced in Indonesia. In this study, dried fecal sludge from the dewatering unit of a Sewage Treatment Plant in DKI Jakarta was used as raw material to produce RDF. In this study, pelletizing was carried out as an effort to densify and improve the physical characteristics of dried fecal sludge as RDF raw material. Dried fecal sludge is refined, weighed, added starch for adhesive, then molded into pellets. Pellets are molded using two different pelletizing processes, using screw pelletizer and revolving die pelletizer. The molded pellets were then dried and stored at room temperature with indirect sunlight for 6 hours before being analyzed for their quality parameters. This study analyzed and compared the physical characteristics of pellets produced using two different pelletizing processes for density, hardness, and calorific value parameters that influence the storage, transportation, and quality of the material. The result shows that both pelletizers have improved the quality of raw fecal sludge as refuse-derived fuel. As a result of the pelletizing process, the highest calorific value of the fecal sludge pellets is 3071.028 kcal/kg. The screw pelletizer produced higher calorific value pellets compared to the other, with longer but smaller diameters, larger densities, and smaller hardness.

The purpose of this research is to understand sponge species, micro symbiont, performance, mechanisms, and types of compounds resulting from biodegradation. The analytical method is applied by selecting the model, results from characterization and morphological identification, phenotype, genotype. Selected of micro symbiont are made as suspensions, interacted with modified naphthalene contaminated waste. The biodegradation process using the Bacillus Sp (BS) isolates sponge Neopetrosia Sp and Acinetobacter Calcoaceticus (AC) isolated from sponge Callyspongia Aerizusa, was carried out by interacting a microscopic suspension of 5,000 mg/L naphthalene waste for 25 days. Micro symbiont biodegradation results by determining the concentration of contaminants and biodegradation products, in the form of pure organic compounds using GC-MS, and the analysis of functional groups of natural components using IR. Destruction of the naphthalene molecule occurs through an enzymatic reaction mechanism, observed based on visible parameters. The performance of BS symbiont biodegradation on naphthalene is in the range of 7.34% - 51.37%, while the AC range is 5.84% -37.26% in w/v, achieved within 5-25 days interaction. Biodegradation products based on functional groups were identified as compounds of aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acids, esters, alkanes. Observation of biodegradation parameters confirmed pH changes, increased optical density values, gas bubbles formed and the smell of fermentation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Multimodal facilities are being built in a majority of urban areas to accommodate both motorized and non-motorized traffic. The resulting transportation system is susceptible to complex interactions between different modes and users. These complex interactions are hard to quantify and capture on a regular basis. There is a need to rely on a microsimulation platform to replicate such real-world scenarios and forecast future conditions. This study focuses on assessing the effect of heterogeneous traffic conditions involving multiple modes like light rail transit (LRT), walking, bicycling, and motorized traffic on vehicle delay at intersections using Vissim traffic simulation software. A 2.5-mile urban arterial corridor comprising of seven at-grade and two grade-separated signalized intersections along US-29 route in the city of Charlotte, NC, USA was chosen for analysis and modeling. Base simulation model was developed by replicating the traffic scenario for the year 2018 (without LRT and non-motorized traffic). External controllers like VisVAP and Viswalk were used to assign signal priority and model heterogenous traffic conditions. The vehicle operational performance of the corridor improved along the major street after the addition of the LRT. An increase in vehicle delay on the major street was observed with an increase in the non-motorized traffic. Contrarily, the operational performance of the cross-streets at at-grade intersections did not see any significant change due to the addition of non-motorized traffic. The proposed framework assists planners to assess the impact of adding a new transit system like LRT and associated non-motorized traffic on the urban corridor. © 2022

This study presents an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to evaluate the management strategies for Human-Orangutan Conflict (HOC) in Aceh, Indonesia. Utilizing an IPA Grid, the research categorizes various management strategies into four quadrants, each reflecting different levels of community-perceived importance and performance. Strategies like “Orangutan-Safe Fences” and “Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) for Orangutans” in Quadrant A are both important and performing well, underscoring the effectiveness of current efforts in these areas. Significantly, “Traditional Measures for Orangutan Deterrence,” which include non-harmful, traditional methods such as the use of specific noise deterrents, physical barriers, and community-led patrols to discourage orangutans from entering human areas, alongside “Quick Response program for Orangutan Incidents,” are placed in Quadrant B. In Quadrant C, “Strengthen Law Enforcement and Conservation Policies” are deemed less crucial and underperforming, suggesting a lower priority for immediate resource allocation. Lastly, Quadrant D includes well-performing but less critical strategies like “Early Warning Systems for Orangutan Presence” and “Raise Local Awareness About Orangutans,” pointing to potential over-investment. The study's findings advocate for a strategic reallocation of resources and highlight the importance of aligning conservation efforts with community priorities for effective and sustainable HOC management. © 2024 The Author(s)

Transforming disposable masks to sustainable gasoline-like fuel via pyrolysis

The past COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the use of disposable masks, posing a significant environmental challenge due to the swift accumulation of waste. This study explores the potential of pyrolysis to transform this waste into valuable pyrolysis oil with characteristics akin to gasoline, addressing both waste management and energy derivation concerns. Pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process, was applied to mask materials, producing an oil with a high calorific value of 45.93 MJ/kg. The chemical makeup of this pyrolytic oil was meticulously characterized using Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (PY-GC/MS) and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), confirming the presence of hydrocarbons similar to those found in gasoline. Achieving an efficiency of 41.865 %, the pyrolytic approach demonstrated a promising potential for not only managing mask waste but also creating an alternative energy carrier. However, the study advises that before considering this pyrolytic oil for engine use, a thorough evaluation of its combustion quality, engine compatibility, and environmental impact is essential. This investigation advances the discussion on sustainable waste management, offering insights into the generation of alternative fuels from daily waste streams, while also highlighting the necessity for comprehensive analyses to ensure the practicality and efficiency of such novel energy solutions. © 2023 The Author(s)

Access to healthcare facilities is crucial in the present day. Healthcare facilities must be proportional to the population in a given area. Therefore, it is important to increase the number of healthcare facilities in regions where there is an imbalance. Proper planning and a sustainability review are necessary when determining locations for healthcare facilities. Environmental changes can affect the suitability of a location in the future. Thus, planning that can predict future suitability conditions is required to ensure that the built locations have high sustainability. This study predicts the suitability of healthcare facility locations in 2030 in West Java using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS). Both static and dynamic data processed at 30×30 meter intervals across West Java will be used. Geospatial and remote sensing data are utilized in the study. Dynamic parameter extrapolation uses data from 2000 to 2018. The random forest machine learning method is employed to obtain the suitability values for healthcare facility locations using existing health facility training data in West Java. The results show changes in the suitability classes of healthcare facilities in each region from 2018 to 2030, with some areas experiencing an increase or decrease in class. This research highlights consistently suitable locations, ensuring their sustainability as healthcare facility sites. © 2024
