Construction projects are exposed to a wide diversity of variabilities, which suggests the existence of a correspondent wide diversity of variability coping mechanisms, whether they are designed or not. This wide diversity is not properly accounted for by the concept of buffer, as it neglects the social and informal dimensions of coping with variability. The use of the concept of slack is proposed as an alternative. A companion IGLC 29 paper defines slack and discusses its relationships with proxy concepts such as flexibility and resilience. This paper presents nine practical examples of slack in managerial processes and topics that are of interest for the lean construction community. These examples suggest that, while slack has been concealed by the lack of theorization and consistent terminology, it is ubiquitous in lean construction. The government determines forests based on the main functions of: Conservation forest, protection forest and production forest. The Petungkriyono protected forest is one of the conservation areas located in the Petungkriyono, Pekalongan City. Conservation of protected forests in Petungkriyono is very much needed considering the development of the wider city, so that the forests that were originally forest areas that functioned as green open spaces have been greatly reduced, especially in areas along the river that leads to Pekalongan City. The research method used in this study is to use descriptive research methods. The data collection technique used is the study of literature. Data analysis techniques were performed using a Likert scale calculated by discriminant analysis. Type of participation contributed by the community in the protected forest area of Petungkriyono;a) participation of ideas, b) energy, c) property, d) skill e) social participation. The form of community participation in the conservation of the Petungkriyono protected forest area;a) active participation, b) passive participation. Geographical factors that serve as a reference for the importance of conservation of the Petungkriyono protected forest are: A) habitat, b) consideration of the area, c) physical and human factors, and d) economic value. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.

Excessive vibrations on the floor slabs have an impact on the emergence of feelings of anxiety, worrying about the collapse of the building. From the results of visual observations, it was found that there is damage to the floor covering. This strongly indicates that there is a problem of deflection of the slab and/or floor beams, so this study is aimed at identifying the factors causing excessive vibrations on the floor slab, and recommending strategies and techniques for handling them. For this reason, the calculation of the frequency value of the floor plate vibration due to a combination of fixed and temporary loads acting on the building concerned. It was found that the natural fundamental frequency value of the existing slab is less than the standardized value i.e., 7.5 Hz. In addition, from the horizontal and vertical configuration of the building’s structural elements, it is known that the area of the floor slab that experiences excessive vibration is greater than 12 m2 so that the selected form of reinforcement is the addition of a structural column in the middle of the span of the main beam that supports the floor slab. Furthermore, a simulation of the calculation of the stability of the structure after the addition of the column is carried out. The simulation results show that the natural fundamental frequency value becomes greater than 7.5 Hz, i.e., 8,539 Hz. This proves that the excessive vibration on the floor slab is caused by a floor area that is too large so that the addition of a supporting column in the middle of the span of the main beam supporting the floor slab is proven to be able to eliminate excessive vibration.

This study delves into the evaluation of the Komodo dragons Adaptive Conservation program (KACP) at Komodo National Park in Indonesia through Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). It aims to understand how the programs components align with community priorities and assess its effectiveness. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes community perceptions of KACP's critical elements, spanning eco-tourism initiatives to environmental protection strategies. The community is categorized into local advocates, eco-tourism enthusiasts, and eco-community harmonizers, identifying how each group perceives and interacts with various facets of KACP. The findings reveal significant differences in perceptions of importance and performance among these groups, providing insights into areas of strength and those needing improvement. Additionally, the study includes an analysis of demographic influences on these perceptions through Logit and Probit models, aiming to understand the impacts across different community segments. The results highlight the necessity for an adaptive and responsive design in conservation efforts, considering community expectations and ecological impacts. Despite offering comprehensive insights, the study acknowledges limitations in the demographic scope and suggests future research directions, such as longitudinal studies and an expanded analysis of variables. These findings offer critical guidance for policymakers and conservation practitioners to enhance conservation programs’ effectiveness and community alignment, emphasizing the need to adapt to the challenges and changes introduced by KACP. © 2024 Elsevier GmbH

The effect of using asbuton with used waste diesel oil on the stability of the porus asphalt mix with hot mix cold laid method

The abundant availability of Asbuton in Indonesia should be proportional to the percentage of its use, however, in the implementation of pavement works, it is still dominated by petroleum asphalt, the price of which tends to be higher than the Asbuton. If you look at the elements in Asbuton, namely minerals and bitumen, it should be superior to petroleum asphalt. One of the factors where the use of Asbuton is not optimal is that the stability value of the mixture using Asbuton is still low compared to the mixture using petroleum asphalt. So this research aims to analyze the stability value of the porous asphalt mixture using Asbuton and waste oil as a rejuvenating agent with hot mix cold laid method. The research method was carried out by carrying out test objects with variations in Asbuton content of 5%, 5.5% and 6% with variations in fuel wastage rate of 0%, 2%, 3% and 4%. The total number of test objects is 36 samples. Then the Marshall test was tested to determine its stability value. The results obtained based on the test results are the highest average stability value at the variation of the levels of Asbuton 6%, 5.5% and 5% respectively 1295.3 Kg with 4% waste oil content; 1238 Kg with 3% used oil; and 773 kg with a waste oil content of 2%. Adding the Asbuton content increases the stability value; however, the level of used oil in the best results still varies. It can therefore be concluded that the highest stability value of a hollow asphalt mixture using an Asbuton content of 6% and a waste oil content of 4% with a value of 1295.3 Kg, meets the specification of the Road engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM).

Considering the significant thermal influence green spaces have on built environments, this paper aims to present the results of a data-driven analysis to identify statistically significant spatiotemporal trends of green heat losses and surface temperature increases in the urban area of a small municipality. The Brazilian municipality of Feliz was selected for the case study. Landsat-5, Landsat-7, and Landsat-8 images were used to identify Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) cold spots and Land Surface Temperature (LST) hot spots. A data mining tool was employed to identify emerging physical patterns, making it possible to highlight areas where increases in temperature might be associated with specific characteristics of built environments. The urban area presents a particular dynamic, where specific persistent LST hot spots can be associated with historical or diminishing NDVI cold spots. Additionally, LST hot spots, which contribute towards the formation of new urban heat islands were found to correspond to 10% of the detectable emerging patterns in the urban areas. It is expected that the present spatial analysis, by highlighting priority areas for intervention, could provide information to decision-makers and urban planners that would assist in the reorientation of urban occupation, thus contributing to more sustainable and efficient urban planning. © 2022, The Authors. Potential impact of climate change on water resources availability in Bantaeng District, South Sulawesi Province

As a result of climate change, the condition of the rain pattern will be more extreme, where in the rainy season, the rainfall will be higher so that it can trigger more floods and landslides; while in the dry season, the rainfall will be less added by increasing evaporation due to increased temperatures which can trigger drought disasters. The objective of this research was to what extent the impact of climate change on water availability which will be used as the main raw material for Municipal Water in Bantaeng Regency. The research method was descriptive qualitative with cross sectional approach. The results of climate change projections showed that the potential monthly average surface water discharge in Bantaeng Regency, especially the watershed used by PDAM, changed fluctuatively. During the rainy season, the projected run-off discharge increased by around 15%; while during the dry season it decreased by around 13% in the Nipa-Nipa, Gusung, and Kaili Watershed. This indicated that the vulnerability of surface water resources during the peak of the dry season (August) to the watershed with Municipal Water intakes, however, in general, the availability of surface water resources in the three watersheds was relatively safe as indicated by the projection results of the run-off discharge average annual rate increased by 4%

This study examines the application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) in precast beam-column joints to improve structural performance. The studied joints included both adequately and inadequately reinforced conditions (strong and weak joints), constructed using UHPC and deformed rebars. The strong joints allowed the rebars to reach their yield strength under the design bending moment, effectively transferring loads and maintaining structural integrity during service conditions. These well-detailed joints exhibited ductile failure behavior, which is a desired characteristic in reinforced concrete design. In contrast, the weak joints experienced premature and brittle failures, underscoring the importance of proper detailing and reinforcement length. Finally, a practical design scheme was developed to determine the appropriate rebar lengths in UHPC connections to ensure structural integrity and safety. Overall, the integration of UHPC into precast concrete joints significantly enhanced bond performance, improved load transfer mechanisms, and contributed to more resilient and reliable construction practices. © 2025 The Authors

The air layer between the interior finishes and the structure is used as piping and wiring space. In many cases, ceilings and dry-type double floors are commonly constructed in Japan. However, the effect of ceilings and dry-type double floors on the heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation performance has not yet quantitatively studied. Therefore, in this paper, the same ceiling and floor structures were constructed for concrete and CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) buildings, and the heavyweight floor impact sound was investigated. As results, it was confirmed that the reduction amount of the heavy-weight floor impact sound by the ceiling tended to be smaller in CLT building than in concrete building. However, the trends were similar. Due to the dry-type double floor structure, the heavy-weight floor impact sound level was increased in concrete building and decreased in CLT building at 63 Hz in the octave band center frequency band. Therefore, it can be said that the dry-type double floor structure can be used to improve the heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation performance in the CLT building. © INTER-NOISE 2021 .All right reserved.

This study attempted to investigate the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia-nitrogen (NH4-N), and total phosphorus (TP) from secondary treated domestic wastewater using algal photo-bioreactor. A semi-pilot plant was constructed and operated for 112 days under continuous flow conditions at Zenin wastewater treatment plant, Giza, Egypt (WWTP) which consists of an algal photo-bioreactor with an effective volume of 188 litters and a lamella settler. The removal of the studied parameters was studied at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations. A continuous illumination of the photo-bioreactor was maintained using sunlight in the morning and incandescent lamps at night. The best overall organic and nutrients removal efficiency was recorded at HRT of 16.1 hours. Artificial neural network (ANN) with a structure of 3-10-1 was used to predict the BOD, COD, TSS, NH4-N, and TP removal efficiencies. It was revealed that the ANN model adequately predicted the studied parameters removal efficiencies with r2 greater than 90%. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers. All rights reserved.
