In 2012, National University of Singapore (NUS) started to develop Cubesats as an educational platform to teach and motivate engineering students from multidisciplinary backgrounds to apply their engineering knowledge and skills in real-life contexts. In this CubeSat project, students have the opportunity to work on an actual nanosatellite, which would be launched into space, as their Final Year Projects (FYPs) or one-year master projects with academic credits. In this paper, we investigated students' motivation to work on this project by measuring their achievement goals using a 3x2 achievement goal motivation questionnaire by Elliot, Murayama and Pekrun (2011). Nineteen engineering students were enrolled in our one-year CubeSat project and they were surveyed at the beginning, the middle and at the end of their projects. Students' overall motivation was found to be high but during the middle phase of the project, there was a dip in motivation. Overall, task-approach goal score was increased but their self-avoidance goal score increased faster than their self-approach goal score. There were also variations of students' other-approach and other-avoidance goal scores during the project process. These findings were discussed in relation to the instructional approach in CubeSat and the implications for enhancing students' real-life learning experiences.

Willingness and performance of older adults using Information and Communication Technologies for cognitive activity and social interaction

This study is part of a project aimed at designing a learning intervention to enable older Costa Ricans to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for enhancing cognitive activity and social interaction. This paper presents some results of the designed learning intervention related to participants' willingness to include the proposed activities with ICT in their daily routines, adequateness of ICT applications to support older adults' ICT use for cognitive activity and social interaction, and participants' performance in the designed cognitive and social activities. The learning intervention focused on stimulating autobiographical memory (ABM) and training cognitive abilities such as attention, flexibility, problem solving and memory while having social interaction with peers. Forty-one older adults used online social platforms for sharing personal reminiscences and played online cognitive games to train cognitive abilities. Results showed that participants were willing and able to accomplish the cognitive activities freely and independently during the learning intervention period and beyond that period. Content analysis indicated that most of the shared reminiscences were specific personal memories from participants' childhood, which accomplished the social function of reminiscence by creating empathy and social cohesion among participants. Participants improved performance in online cognitive games by repetitive practice. In a linear mixed effect model analysis, the number of times played had a statistically significant effect on performance improvement, whereas factors such as age, education, and positive attitude towards technology did not. Results suggested that this type of intervention can be beneficial for older adults from several cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and a potential avenue for cost effective interventions aimed to reduce the risks of cognitive impairment and social isolation. © 2018 International Society for Gerontechnology.

It has been shown that developing nano-satellites is a good platform to motivate and educate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In this paper, the authors have explained an innovative project management method, called major-project-review, and its implementations to supervise different batches of multidisciplinary final year engineering students to develop a CubeSat as their Final Year Projects (FYPs) in three to four years. The major-project-review approach has been successfully verified in our first CubeSat project, Galassia, and is continuously used to develop our second CubeSat, Galassia2. From the success of Galassia and student feedbacks, the method has been proven to be very efficient to control and monitor the CubeSat development progress, and to motivate and educate engineering students. With our continuous implementations in Galassia2 project, we hope to collect more experiences and data to further optimize the approach.

Coastal cities are at the frontlines of climate change impacts, resulting in an urgent need for substantial adaptation. To understand whether, and to what extent, cities are on track to prepare for climate risks, this paper systematically assesses the academic literature to evaluate evidence on climate change adaptation in 199 coastal cities worldwide. Results show that adaptation in coastal cities is rather slow, of narrow scope and not transformative. Adaptation measures are predominantly designed based on past and current—rather than future—patterns in hazards, exposure and vulnerability. City governments, particularly in high-income countries, are more likely to implement institutional and infrastructural responses, whereas coastal cities in lower-middle-income countries often rely on households to implement behavioral adaptation. There is comparatively little published knowledge on coastal urban adaptation in low- and middle-income countries, and regarding particular adaptation types such as ecosystem-based adaptation. These insights make an important contribution for tracking adaptation progress globally and help to identify entry points for improving adaptation of coastal cities in the future.

Aitchison is also working on a PhD exploring the future of design education as well as leading DMI's FuturED (future of education) efforts in Europe.

This paper presents the development and performance test of electric motorcycle in South East Asia i.e. in Singapore and Malaysia. National University of Singapore (NUS) team converted ICE based motorcycle (Honda CBR400) into battery electric motorcycle using lead acid battery pack and lithium polymer battery pack. Fuel Cell Vehicle Group in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) built a fuel cell electric motorcycle which used hydrogen fuel cell system (named H2Motive® fuel cell motorcycle), lithium polymer battery pack and ultra-capacitor module. Road tests have been conducted to test the performance of both electric motorcycle types. Performance of H2Motive® fuel cell motorcycle was done by participating South African Solar Challenge 2008 in technology class. Results showed that H2Motive® fuel cell motorcycle was able to travel about 2400 km. Some roads were at steep and hilly climb and the motorcycle could stand during heavy rain. The converted CBR400 was tested in World Advanced Vehicle Expedition with 1600 km travel distance. NUS team's e-bike claimed third spot in that rally. Both type of electric vehicle performed well during the rally. It can be concluded that two of them were ready for gaining road-legal status.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).
