Symmetries are ubiquitous in science, aiding theoretical comprehension by discerning patterns in mathematical models and natural phenomena. This work introduces a method for assessing the extent of symmetry within a time series. We explore both microscopic and macroscopic features extracted from a recurrence plot. By analyzing the statistics of small recurrence matrices, our approach delves into microscale dynamics, facilitating the identification of symmetric time series segments through diagonal macroscale structures on a recurrence plot. We validate our approach by successfully quantifying involution symmetries for three-dimensional dynamical models, specifically, order-2 rotational symmetry in the Lorenz '63 model, and inversion symmetry in the Chua circuit. Our quantifier also detects symmetry breaking in the modified Lorenz model for El Niño phenomenon. The method can be applied in a versatile manner, not only to three-dimensional trajectories but also to univariate time series. Symmetry quantification in time series is promising for enhancing dynamical system modeling and profiling.

Manufacturers of credit and debit card terminals lend their products to retailers, retaining responsibility for repairing or replacing devices upon verification of malfunctions or cosmetic defects. The logistic operator, which processes up to ten thousand products daily, must assess each device's condition through tests and manual visual inspections. Depending on the evaluation, a terminal may be returned to the client or sent to the manufacturer's tech center for repair. This inspection process is highly subjective and prone to human error, as different inspectors may assess the same device inconsistently. To address these inconsistencies, we developed a visual inspection system specifically for evaluating the LCD conditions of payment termi-nals. The hardware includes a 3D-printed structure to optimize image acquisition, an active illumination scheme, and a camera to capture images of the terminals. The desktop application features a YOLOv8 object detection model to highlight defects on the terminal's screen, complemented by a user-friendly interface with various functionalities. Our system improved the efficiency and accuracy of inspections, providing operators with a more reliable tool that ensures consistency. The final model achieved a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 77.4% and a processing speed of 88 milliseconds on CPU. Additionally, the real-time application interface offers low-latency usability, further enhancing the inspection process. After thorough model training and testing conducted in collaboration with the terminal manufacturer, the system has demonstrated its reliability for deployment at the production level.

Ensuring safety in workplaces such as industry and civil construction requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Enhancing compliance with PPE regulations or employing educational measures through a deployable device, which can also restrict access to hazardous areas without proper safety equipment, is crucial to mitigating workplace accidents and reducing the risk of fatalities or disability. This paper proposes the development of a device equipped with embedded machine learning models that use a camera to monitor workers and enforce the usage of PPE. These models are deployed on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense, integrated with an OV7675 camera shield, to capture images and employ our trained computer vision model to classify the usage of safety helmets. The compact size of the trained and quantized model, weighing only 59 KB, taking about 595 milliseconds total time, 92.5% accuracy, demonstrates its efficiency. This innovation not only promotes the adhesion to safety protocols, but also presents significant benefits in scientific and economic contexts.
