Background: Minimizing the risk of heavy metal pollution is of utmost importance to ensure consumer safety. In this research, we utilized inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to determine the presence of 12 heavy metals in Taiwanese commercial edible oils, both refined and unrefined. Results: Our analytical findings revealed significantly lower levels of heavy metals in refined oils compared with unrefined oils. Through principal component analysis and cluster analysis of 19 types of edible oils, we identified Cd, Ba, Fe, Pb, and Co as the primary variables influencing heavy metal levels in edible oils. Notably, the heavy metal contents in the edible oils did not surpass international standards. Risk assessment results indicated that unrefined oils carried higher risk levels than refined oils. The incremental lifetime cancer risk values calculated for unrefined oils exceeded 10⁻⁶ in all age groups except for the 19 ~ 65 years category, while the noncarcinogenic risks remained well below 1, regardless of refined or unrefined oils. Conclusions: Our study sheds light on the distribution characteristics of heavy metal contents in edible oils, highlighting higher levels of heavy metals and associated risks in non-refined oils compared with refined oils. Ultimately, the presence of heavy metals in edible oils poses low health risks to the human body. © 2024 The Authors. A microwave kiln, made of silicon carbide and ceramic fiber, commonly employs in a household glassware production process. In this process, when the kiln was in a microwave oven, a microwave transmitted to the kiln generating a high temperature to fuse the glass inside. This article presents a thermal simulation to investigate the temperature inside the kiln based on multiphysics consisting of a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The multiphysics results revealed the temperature inside the kiln in a transient state, consistent with the experimental results. As expected, the temperature increased with the increasing time of the process. Significantly, the silicon carbide had higher temperatures than the ceramic fiber;therefore, silicon carbide is a crucial material for generating heat inside the kiln. In addition, the temperature-increasing rate (TIR) inside the kiln depended on the kiln's thickness (Th). As a result, the thinner Th provided better TIR. The research findings can be applied to develop a high-efficacy household glassware production process. © 2023 IEEE.

The efficiency of antimicrobial packaging in protecting and prolonging the shelf life of food goods depends critically on the relationship between antimicrobial agents and microbiological growth. This study aims to overview how antimicrobial compounds interact with microbes to maintain long-term antimicrobial inhibition in relation to the release, absorption, and diffusion of antimicrobial compounds in a food packaging system. This paper also reviews factors that might impact the antimicrobial packaging’s efficacy. This study shows release mechanisms of the antimicrobial compounds from materials, where the antimicrobial compounds can be diffused from the materials through the headspace for indirect contact packaging system or directly diffused to the food products. Minimal inhibitory concentrations can be an indicator to know the effectiveness of the antimicrobial compounds inside the packaging system. With the controlled release of compounds, bacterial growth can be inhibited due to the interaction between antimicrobial compounds and bacteria. Many factors affect the interaction, such as inner properties of materials, food components, and external factors, e.g., temperature, relative humidity, and incorporation of compounds in the materials. These factors can be simplified by understanding the characteristics of the antimicrobial compounds and the minimum inhibitory concentration on bacteria. Therefore, understanding the factors influencing the compounds’ release and antimicrobial activity can maximize the effectiveness of the antimicrobial packaging design.

Possible solutions for oxygenation support in critically ill patients with COVID-19

Purpose: Due to the large number of patients with respiratory deficiency during the COVID-19 pandemic, several governments and their respective health care services have been studying ways to complement the care provided by offering immediate solutions. In view of this, the aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review of the advantages and disadvantages of possible solutions in oxygenation support. Methods: This systematic review used the PRISMA-P methodology and sought to list alternatives in oxygenation support that are being applied and studied worldwide. A bibliographic search was conducted in the MEDLINE and Cochrane Central databases, using the keywords SARS-CoV-2, COVID19, or coronavirus;combined with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical ventilation, mechanical ventilation support, low-cost, anesthesia, anesthesia machine, and ventilation therapy. The records were also found in the gray literature. Results: The search found 85 publications of which 41 articles were considered after excluding duplicate articles, reading the title and summary, and reading the articles in full. The oxygenation supports identified in these publications were the following: ECMO, shared mechanical ventilator, fast or low-cost production equipment, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), non-invasive ventilation, and use of anesthesia equipment as a mechanical ventilator. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the importance of a trained clinical team in the application of technologies. The alternatives found for support oxygenation require a more robust clinical evaluation to demonstrate their efficacy and safety for the COVID-19 patient. © 2021, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

Generating hydrogen from renewable energy sources is widely recognized as an effective strategy for addressing critical challenges in the energy sector while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to assess the wind energy potential for electricity and hydrogen production in five locations on Sumba Island using 10 years (2011–2020) of data from the NASA's POWER Project. A wind variability assessment was performed on five wind turbines ranging from 500 kW to 1.5 MW and using electrolysis technology. The results indicated a hydrogen production potential of 25–57 tons per year. Economic analysis of hydrogen production for Haharu reveals an attractive internal rate of return (IRR) of 43% with a payback period (PBP) of 2.25 years and a net present value (NPV) of 1.3 MM USD, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of 0.0241 USD/kWh, and the levelized cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) of 1.01 USD/kg. Sensitivity analysis underscores the critical influence of investment and revenue on project profitability, highlighting their substantial impact on determining a project's success or failure. These findings emphasize the potential of Sumba Island as a hub for sustainable energy production to meet the growing demand for clean and renewable energy sources. © 2024 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC

This paper presents the human fall detection by convolutional neural network (CNN) classification and MobileNet algorithm. In order to reduce the number of parameter, we propose a vision-based fall detection model, that is called “Applied Depthwise separable-based CNN-MobileNet (ACM) algorithm”. This model is based on CNN, deptwise convolution and pointwise convolution of MobileNet algorithm. Experimental results show the accuracy of proposed ACM model about 97.68% and number of parameters of proposed ACM model is less than conventional CNN model.

Fall accidents are critical issues in an aging and aged society. Recently, many researchers developed "pre-impact fall detection systems"using deep learning to support wearable-based fall protection systems for preventing severe injuries. However, most works only employed simple neural network models instead of complex models considering the usability in resource-constrained mobile devices and strict latency requirements. In this work, we propose a novel pre-impact fall detection via CNN-ViT knowledge distillation, namely PreFallKD, to strike a balance between detection performance and computational complexity. The proposed PreFallKD transfers the detection knowledge from the pre-trained teacher model (vision transformer) to the student model (lightweight convolutional neural networks). Additionally, we apply data augmentation techniques to tackle issues of data imbalance. We conduct the experiment on the KFall public dataset and compare PreFallKD with other state-of-the-art models. The experiment results show that PreFallKD could boost the student model during the testing phase and achieves reliable F1-score (92.66%) and lead time (551.3 ms). © 2023 IEEE.

In Taiwan, there are 364,000 patients suffering from chronic kidney disease, with over 90% of them requiring haemodialysis to sustain their lives due to kidney function failure. However, the substantial demand for haemodialysis care has often resulted in nurses’ overwork. The nature of their work, which requires high concentration and puts them under constant high pressure for prolonged periods, significantly impacts the physical and psychological well-being of haemodialysis nurses. Despite this, only a limited number of studies have addressed the health problems caused by their work. Therefore, this study attempts to conduct a systematic literature review to investigate and summarise health problems and risk factors related to musculoskeletal disorders caused by the work of haemodialysis nurses. The study conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed and Web of Science databases, eventually including ten articles for discussion. The systematic review covers topics that may contribute to haemodialysis nurses’ health problems and musculoskeletal disorders. Furthermore, the study aims to analyse whether musculoskeletal symptoms among haemodialysis nurses are due to the specific nature of haemodialysis tasks, work intensity, stress, fatigue, and other factors. The research findings indicate that haemodialysis nurses experience significant work-related stress due to their unique responsibilities, labour-intensive and skill-intensive tasks, repetitive nature of their tasks, and improper posture. These factors may lead to musculoskeletal problems, with hand-related musculoskeletal discomfort twice as prevalent in haemodialysis nurses as in other specialities. Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the leading causes of absenteeism among haemodialysis nurses. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This research investigates the distribution network model of a fruit trading company in Thailand, with a specific focus on the problem of excessive travel distances and vehicle requirements in the company's existing distribution system. Linear programming and optimization techniques are used to improve the distribution network model and to satisfy the daily demand. Results are compared between the current distribution scenario and the optimized model. The computational analysis reveals a significant 21.8% reduction (802 kilometers) in total traveling distance and a 33.33% decrease in the number of vehicles required. Additionally, a comprehensive cost analysis is proposed, incorporating fuel costs, CO2 emissions, and overtime expenses, which were previously overlooked. This research offers valuable insights into the potential benefits of optimization, including cost savings and environmental impact reduction, providing a practical template for managing distribution networks, reducing reliance on ad hoc practices, and fostering a sustainable business model to enhance competitiveness in a challenging market. © 2023 IEEE.

The elimination of organic substances, such as phenol, in conventional and biological processes, has been considered a challenge for the petroleum industry. In this work, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), obtained from cellulosic biomass (CB-rGO), as cotton waste, was employed as a phenol adsorbent in an aqueous solution simulating refinery effluent. The CB-rGO was characterized using HRTEM, Raman, XRD, FTIR, BET, and zeta analysis. The behavior of variables such as pH, contact time, temperature, CB-rGO mass, and adsorbate concentration on the characteristics of the adsorption process were continuously investigated. These parameters of the adsorption process were evaluated across a range of adsorbent concentrations from 100 to 300 mg/L, pH in the range of 2–11, adsorbent mass 5–25 mg, contact time of 0–180 min, and temperature of 20–60 °C. The adsorption isotherm data were better described by the Freundlich equation compared to the Langmuir and Sips models, despite the small difference in R2 values. Mechanism diffusion was analyzed using the Boyd model and confirmed to be the rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. The endothermic nature of this CB-rGO adsorption process with phenol was confirmed by verifying the thermodynamic data. This successful removal of phenol from synthetic effluents highlights the promising potential of this adsorbent obtained from an industrial residue and being an ecologically more sustainable alternative compared to the synthesis of other materials identified to remove this contaminant.
